Fotofacial report, 1st session

Debbie the Dogged <seesigforrealaddr...@mouse–potato.com>
Had the first of my 5 Fotofacial sessions on Tuesday. The doc had given
me an anesthetic cream to put on 1/2 an hour in advance, which I did.
Accidently got some on my lips, which promptly went numb, interesting
feeling.
Was mostly bearably uncomfortable: for the most part, I found the bright
flashes of light (which I could see even under the multiple layers of
eye protection the doc put on me) more irritating than most of the
actual zaps, which mostly felt like very quick pinpricks. There was an
assistant holding something which blew a blast of cold air on the areas
he was working on, and that helped a lot. Some parts of my face were
more sensitive than others, so if I flinched the doc put more anesthetic
cream on those areas. There was only one small area where it really
hurt, to the point that it felt like a burn, but afterwards it looked no
different from the rest of my face, so it must have just been a super–
sensitive spot.
Afterwards, I looked like I had a moderate shiny sunburn on my face.
Didn't hurt, though, and makeup covered it, mostly. No blisters or other
complications. Two days later, the redness from the process is gone,
and there are a few tiny brown dots, barely noticable, where he worked
on (forget the medical name) clogged skin pores that look vaguely like
zits but aren't, and those are fading fast. Although the doc said I
wouldn't notice much difference at this point, my skin defintely is
looking a bit more even–toned.
Back in 3 weeks for round 2.

ooh careful on where you put the anesthetic cream. next time put it on
thicker in those spots that you remember causing flinching.. usually in the
center of the face and not near the bony structure..
sounds like a good result. One tip–– wear sunblock!! you need to wear lots
of sunblock to maintain the results.. I use the colorescience sunforgettable
since it's a transparent powder with an 8 hour life.. I dust it on as a top
layer and am done for the day

Hi Debbie,
I had my first session yesterday, my discomfort was minimal.
My nurse put freezing cold gel on my face in small areas
as she worked. I would describe the ordeal as having a
lighter flicked at you. It wasn't bad. She followed up with
a mini vitamin C mask. My skin looks better already. I
signed up for three sessions. This is in Palo Alto, CA and
if anyone wants more info, just email at
frayedkarma_2...@yahoo and I can give details.

Good idea. Interestingly enough, my sensitive areas were the bridge of
my nose, and around and near my mouth. The doc had me purse my lips and
then blow my cheeks out as he was working on those respective areas, and
that helped a lot.

Yup, I wear spf 30 sunscreen as a matter of course – current favorite is
Kiss My Face Face Factor,Face + Neck SPF 30. On top of that, my
favorite foundation is now Paula's Choice All Bases Covered Foundation
SPF 15, then I use a light dusting of my beloved Dior Compact Powder,
which is SPF 20. I read recently that layering SPFs doesn't increase
the SPF protection, but may increase the time it all lasts, which
doesn't make a lot of sense to me because I thought that's what SPF
*was* –it let you stay out in the sun longer than normal without
burning. I'll have to check out the colorscience powder – 8 hour life
sounds good.

I read in an article recently that when you layer products with
different SPFs the actual sun protection you get at the end is the
averaging of the SPFs of all the products involved––not the sum of all
SPFs as I as well as many other people may think.

That doesn't make sense. Why would applying spf15 on top of spf50 lower the
effectiveness of the original layer?

I wondered this also, so did a bunch of googling around and what I
gather is: you need to let each layer dry completely before applying
another layer, otherwise the newer layer will dilute the underlying,
still–wet one.
