OT – polarized sunglasses

"minicooper" <minicoop...@charter–nospam–.net>
i just got a pair of polarized sunglasses and have noticed something i don't
like –– oncoming cars with sun on their windshields look like they're
shining a red light at me. has anyone noticed this? my glasses are brown
tint ... don't know if the grey would diminish this problem. i bought the
glasses at lenscrafters, so can have them changed, but i always thought
polarized lenses were much better at cutting glare. i don't, however, spend
all my time on the water :–)

prescription sunglasses, and i've never experienced this effect. get thee

I've had polarized sunglasses ever since I learned about polarizing in a
college class (at a polytechnic institute). Mine also have a brown tint,
and are prescription. They are fabulous at cutting out glare, and I've
never seen red like that.
The bottom line is, your glasses shouldn't be doing that. Take them back
to Lenscrafters and complain. They should (and most likely will) try to
make them again. Repeat as often as is necessary.
It sounds to me as though they rotated the lenses a bit off, so you're
seeing
the glare red–shifted instead of completely blocked. Lenscrafters has a
poor reputation for always getting it right the first time, from what I
hear.
Good luck,
JeanneP

Polarized sunglasses are polarized vertically to block light reflected
off horizontal surfaces (light reflected from horizontal surfaces will
be more horizontally polarized.) Glare from lakes, wet roads and ice is
reduced a lot.
However light reflected off of surfaces that are more vertical such as
a windshield will not be blocked very well by polarized sunglasses.

today when i was at the beach, i noticed the tops of the waves had a
reddish cast, as did the wet rocks with sunlight on them. i'm going back to
lenscrafters tomorrow, to have the glasses re–done, this time with grey
lenses. if i'm not happy with them, i'll go back to my regular tinted
sunglasses. thanks, everyone, for your replies! this group has a wealth of
