Korean makeup I've tried lately

Leigh Melton <le...@nbi.com>
I've been on a real kick for Korean cosmetics and skincare for some
months now, ever since I bought my first Calli eyeshadow quad. I have
yellow tones in my skin and have found that the makeup colors work
well for me. I've liked some stuff better than others. I know these
brands don't come up that often but in case anyone is interested, here
are my thoughts on makeup I've tried lately. Since I've been
experimenting with a lot of skincare stuff, I'll post that another
time to keep it from being so long.
DoDo Club Ice Cube eyeshadow.
This is the only DoDo Club item I've tried so far. The packaging is
completely cute – a little acrylic cube (hence the name) that opens up
to a small pan of shadow and a little round mirror. Unfortunately for
me the packaging is better than the product. The shadows come in some
great colors (red orange!) but the one shadow I've tried, Marin Blue
(a greenish teal), didn't last on me very long at all, just ended up
being a pretty blue crease on my lids. Cute idea, cute package, two
hour color. Oh well, it was only five bucks.
Hanbul Vatang Happy Pop Color Eyes
These quads are in beautiful colors, the one I bought, #6, is in
shades of yellow/green. Unfortunately this is another disappearing
trick. Beautiful while you can see them, for about an hour, then they
just fade away to a faint colorless sheen. Nice compact with nice
mirror. I had hoped for better, alas. At $26 for the quad, this one
won't be a repeat purchase.
Amore Laneige Clear Fitting Eyeliner
Liquid eyeliner in a tube. I bought this in color Shimmer Green. It
doesn't really shimmer though (bummer) but is a beautiful dark forest
green that is a nice alternative to black (yay). Very smooth, nice
brush, no gloppy bits which is a problem with some eyeliners I've
tried. I want this one in black, definitely. I think it was $15.
DeBon LacVert Satin Eyeshadow quad.
I have three of these and will definitely buy more. These are some of
the best eyeshadows I've ever used. Silky smooth, highly pigmented,
lasts all day and no eye irritation. The quad I received last week
had silver, gold, charcoal (a sparkly dark, dark grey) and a pale pink
that are perfect for liners, too. I think these are a really good
deal at $22. Very nice compact.
Amore Laneige Triple Eyeshadow
These are, guess what, three coordinating eyeshadows. I have two of
these compacts and am very pleased with them, they're on par with the
LacVert satin quads. All–day color with no creasing, silky and highly
pigmented. The colors are very clearn, not muddy, even the lemon
yellow. Many yellows I've seen tend to be mustardy looking, which I
can't stand. These are quite nice. $20 for three shadows in a really
nice compact with quality mirror is another good deal.
Amore Laneige Liquid Rouge for Lips
I love these – a hint of sparkle in a highly pigmented gloss. The
pen–type applicator twists at one end to dispense the gloss onto a
spongy tip. Very easy to use and less mess than gloss that requires
dipping fingers into it, or the tube–type glosses (like Juicy Tubes)
that seem to get product smeared around the applicator end when I use
them. The Raspberry Mousse is my favorite, a dark pink with just
enough sparkle and a nice shine. These don't leave a "plastic" type
shine, if you like the really glassy look it will require a gloss on
top but since I don't like that look on me, these are perfect. Has a
faintly fruity taste. These do require re–application after you eat
or drink. I think I paid $14 for this.
Amore Laneige Aqualish Gloss
I have this one in Orange Messenger, a clear orange with faintly gold
sparkle. This is another pen–type but it has a built–in lip brush
instead of a sponge–tip applicator. Also has a faintly fruity taste
and has the same wear. I think it's the same formula in a different
applicator. I'm pretty sure this was another $14 item.
DeBon LacVert Honey Lip Rouge
These are fun! Fruit punch type colors. The Summer Star Ruby is what
I would think Hawaiian Punch would look like if it was made into a lip
gloss. Thankfully it doesn't TASTE like that (I like Hawaiian Punch,
but not that much!). I want the Orange Pearl. Also comes in beige
and brown. A wand applicator in a tube. $12. Cute tube, too.
Amore Laneige Completing Cake foundation
This is a 'twincake', I think what I would normally call a "cream to
powder". It's applied with a sponge and gives a matte finish. The
Completing formula controls red tones, which is why I tried it because
I didn't want to have to use foundation and color corrector, too
(rosacea). It took a few tries to get the hang of it but now I like
it a lot. When I first opened the package I looked at it and said
"Yow, this is WAY too dark!" even though it was the lightest shade,
but I was wrong. It just looks darker in the pan, it actually goes on
much lighter. It's very smooth without being like spackle, which is a
problem I've had with some CtP foundations. The best thing is it
doesn't settle in my pores, which drives me NUTS when it happens.
This is for normal to drier skins, I don't think this would suit skin
that tends toward the oily side. There is a "Clear Lighting" line
that has sebum control but I've only seen that in liquid, not CtP.
The compact I bought was $26.
I ordered the Laneige Volume Effect mascara this weekend, it should be
here in a few days. It's not that I don't love my Dior but I thought
I'd give the Laneige line a try since I like most of Amore's other
stuff.
BTW, the "AmorePacific" stuff that is being carried at Bergdorf
Goodman now is by the same Amore that makes Laneige, SulWhaSoo, IOPE
and so on. I looked at the offerings at Bergdorf and the prices were
rather high compared to SulWhaSoo (and some items were astronomical).
I think they're supposed to compete with La Mer maybe? The "Time
Response Renewal Cream" is $400 a jar. Ouch.
