Help accessorizing this dress

jpetr...@harris.com
This July, my husband will be a groomsman in a wedding. There will be
no real color in his tux, and the wedding color is "Cornflower Blue."
I bought a lavender chiffon dress that looks similar to this one:
http://www.dillards.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=301&storeId=301&langId=–1&productId=500730383
except it has a larger neck opening, and it's a solid color, like
the lavender in this dress:
http://store.nordstrom.com/product/product_brandboutique.asp?styleid=2855326&boutique=dresses_n_occasion&category=2376776~2374327~2374331~6001765~6001771&dt=05%2D11%2D05&cm_ven=froogledotcom&cm_cat=datafeed&cm_pla=dresses%3Awomen%3Adress&cm_ite=betsey%5Fjohnson%5Ffloral%5Fchiffon%5Fdress%3A145384
(I apologize for not using URL shortening links, as I barely have
enough time to post this as it is! If you can't use the link, the
dress is flutter sleeved, drape necked, and tea length.)
Anyway, it's an afternoon wedding and will probably be fairly
traditional. I can't find shoes that match, but I did find some bone
leather shoes on zappos.com that look promisingly cute and comfortable
for my wide feet, plus they would fill the gap left by my recent
tossing of my old white nice shoes:
http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/3548984/c/5/g/women/s/5/w/3.html
I'm really tempted to use this as an excuse to buy turquoise shoes as
I love the color, and wear some other turquoise accessories to tie it
in, but I think that would just be too jarring, and wouldn't go with
the wedding color. *sigh*.
Anyway, what kind of purse/handbag should I get? I'm not really very
good at picking them. I'm usually the kind of person who just gets one
purse and wears it until something breaks or wears badly, but I want
to be more stylish. Getting a nice purse that matches the shoes would
not be very daring, but it would be a safe start for me. Safe is fine
for a wedding, where I don't want to look like I'm trying to grab
attention. But what kind? There are so many styles of purses out there!
What about material? Must it also be bone leather?
thanks,

do go for the turquoise shoes.. it would be sooooo cute. also you might
think of earrings with beads in the same color family. I would do either a
gold or silver metallic mesh or leather handbag.. a small one with a chain
if you can find it. a silk would be pretty too if you want to do a stripe
that's close to that color of the dress or a pattern like a floral
don't match the handbag to the dress but blend it ..
and you want something perhaps with ruching or a more vintage style..

No one will notice the hardware on your purse so wear the silver
jewelry. Also I've had two beaded clutch purses since the early 1960s,
and they are as good as new. I love them more now than I did then.

For a wedding, I'd go for a clutch. No need to coordinate with your
shoes – this is the season when anything goes and color reigns. With a
lavendar dress, I'd look for a clutch in lime green, yellow or
turquoise. Those colors would really pop and set off the dress quite
nicely! Metallics are also another trendy option right now (but
personally a metallic purse is not my own style – I do have gold flats
but that's it for me).
Check out banana republic – they have some cute clutches right now. If
you want to go safe, you could go for the white python clutch. It's a
safe color, but the python gives it a little special umph.
Want something a little splashier, but still relatively safe? Go with
the metallic python clutch in pink. The pink is close enough to the
lavendar it'll look like a match, but the metallic accent and the
python texture say "trendy."
Want to be more brave? You could go for the kalediscope print clutch!
(hmm, maybe not?)
I just checked the Dillard's site, too. They have an adorable lavendar
croco–embossed clutch. I'm not sure I'd go matchy–matchy though. This
clutch, however, would be perfect if it was in a different color, such
as yellow or lime green!

This is probably too much, but it does have all
the colors needed; turquoise, yellow and lavendar.
If looking for something more conservative dressy
this so isn't.
What can I say.

Thank you for the responses!
What do you think of this combination?
shoes:
http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/4421540/c/21343/g/women/s/5/w/3.html
clutch:
http://www.overstock.com/cgi–bin/d2.cgi?PAGE=PRODUCT&PROD_ID=1043577&cid=25608&fp=F
It's not exactly turquoise, but still a color I'll enjoy. As a bonus,
these would somewhat fit into my everyday wardrobe too.
Thanks again!

Love, LOVE the clutch!
Here's an idea – what if you got the turquoise shoes with the *yellow*
clutch? The trend right now is not necessarily to match shoes and
purse. So mix it up a little.
Or since the dress is solid color, mix it up with the purse and look
for one that has some interest. I saw this one on ebags, for example.
I'd probably want to see it in person, but it's pretty different:

Very different!
I don't know how much the OP wants to spend, but since I have too much
time on my hands:

This is a very beautiful clutch and could be used for years and years,
since it's more neutral. An investment piece rather than a one–time
deal.

Even though this doesn't have lavendar in it, I still think this would
work, and it is more of a day than evening purse. Very cute! I'd wear
the bone shoes with this one though.

I thought this was very different! Don't know if I'd spend $70 on it
though!

Might be too small, but it's adorable.

What time? Afternoon weddings are actually the least formal type of
wedding, so your accessories should be for daytime, not evening.
I'm really tempted to use this as an excuse to buy turquoise shoes as

Except for the traditional prohibitions about wearing black or white,

Love the idea of a clutch. Ebags has a bunch of affordable bags in the
special occasion section. How about this bag in turquoise?
http://www.ebags.com/la_regale/mod_squad_multi_mini_hobo/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=53741
Or this beaded clutch in navy iris or silver or cranberry, even
http://www.ebags.com/la_regale/beaded_wave_clutch/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=49077
this one is a sequined frame bag available in multi–lilac or fuschia:
http://www.ebags.com/la_regale/sequined_frame_bag_with_shoulder_strap/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=53738
I like to mix lavender with blues, especially navy. Love that combo.
Also like it with purple.
For shoes, I found a few for less than 100$ How about this Naturalizer
slide? Too simple? It comes in lavender.
http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/5267581/c/1754/g/women/w/3.html
IMO, it wouldn't be too matchy–matchy to have shoes the same color as
this dress. It's when all the accessories are the same color that it
can get too much. If the shoes and dress are in the same colour family,
I think it gives continuity. Does this make sense? Then again, it
probably depends on the color of the dress.
How about this bone/platinum slide?
http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/1638668/c/15998/g/women/w/3.html
Or this purple "snake" slide?
http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/5257504/c/5083/g/women/w/3.html
The same material in a strappy sandal:
http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/3731937/c/5083/g/women/w/3.html
If you want to pair your lavender with pink (could work, but might be
too cutesy), how about this shoe?
http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/3767894/c/26337/g/women/w/3.html

Love, LOVE the clutch!
Here's an idea – what if you got the turquoise shoes with the *yellow*
clutch? The trend right now is not necessarily to match shoes and
purse. So mix it up a little.
Or since the dress is solid color, mix it up with the purse and look
for one that has some interest. I saw this one on ebags, for example.
I'd probably want to see it in person, but it's pretty different:
I was thinking the same thing–– turq shoes, yellow clutch or GOLD clutch

Thank you, everyone, for your advice. You sure are opening my eyes to
the possibilities. I don't mean to single out one post, but I don't
want to clutter up the thread with lots of little responses, so I just
picked a place.
The frugal side of me wants to get something that I can also use with
upcoming company holiday parties, which are invariably evening and
more formal, so it was cool to see suggestions with rich dark colors.
I love color saturation. :–) Frugal–me is thinking in terms of the
other needs I know I'll have coming up, and debating between evening
elegance and everyday sassy, and the little devil on the other shoulder
is saying, "Aw, c'mon! Live a little!"
The beaded clutch is scrumptious, although it's more than I feel like
spending. If I choose to go that route, I found a good number of
"vintage" bags that would fit that bill. It's not that I have a
budget,
but just don't like spending more than I need to.

Since the dress itself is solid color, I like the idea of breaking it
up with a pattern on the purse.
If I'm considering versatility and longevity, I probably will stay
away from beaded and fabric purses, as I'm likely to break off beads
or rough up the fabric, or my two pre–school boys will get their
hands on it somehow. But, the boys aren't going to this wedding.
(yay... DH and I get to sit next to each other!)
I love the thought of a yellow purse with that dress and blue/
turquoise shoes – yummy! I wish I was able to wear yellow with my
skintone.
Another question: in your humble and appreciated opinions, if I
wear silver–based jewelry would it be a bad idea for the purse to
have gold hardware, or does that just not matter anymore?
Oh, and it's not that I'm trying to match the wedding color; I just
don't want to clash with it. Since DH will be a groomsman, it's
likely I'll be posed in some formal pictures they want to keep, and
I don't want to stick out the wrong way.
I'll let you know what I decide to do!
Thank you,

more formal, so it was cool to see suggestions with rich dark colors.

Thank you,

Love, LOVE the clutch!
Here's an idea – what if you got the turquoise shoes with the *yellow*
clutch? The trend right now is not necessarily to match shoes and
purse. So mix it up a little.
Or since the dress is solid color, mix it up with the purse and look
for one that has some interest. I saw this one on ebags, for example.
I'd probably want to see it in person, but it's pretty different:
I was thinking the same thing–– turq shoes, yellow clutch or GOLD clutch

the possibilities. I don't mean to single out one post, but I don't
want to clutter up the thread with lots of little responses, so I just

the beaded wave clutch in the champagne, silver .. not cranberry since it
doesn't work with the lavender/periwinkle..
the naturalizer shoes are quite nice and would allow her to funk up the
handbag a lot.
do the strappy sandal in the lizard.. it's perfect!
that lizard sandal would allow you to do more with a handbag and jewelry..
see if you can find a vintage frame bag..

Or this beaded clutch in navy iris or silver or cranberry, even
http://www.ebags.com/la_regale/beaded_wave_clutch/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=49077
this one is a sequined frame bag available in multi–lilac or fuschia:
http://www.ebags.com/la_regale/sequined_frame_bag_with_shoulder_strap/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=53738
I like to mix lavender with blues, especially navy. Love that combo.
Also like it with purple.
For shoes, I found a few for less than 100$ How about this Naturalizer
slide? Too simple? It comes in lavender.
http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/5267581/c/1754/g/women/w/3.html
IMO, it wouldn't be too matchy–matchy to have shoes the same color as
this dress. It's when all the accessories are the same color that it
can get too much. If the shoes and dress are in the same colour family,
I think it gives continuity. Does this make sense? Then again, it
probably depends on the color of the dress.
How about this bone/platinum slide?

Or this purple "snake" slide?
http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/5257504/c/5083/g/women/w/3.html
The same material in a strappy sandal:
http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/3731937/c/5083/g/women/w/3.html
If you want to pair your lavender with pink (could work, but might be
too cutesy), how about this shoe?

I am probably a little more conservative than most fashionistas here,
but I would not go with completelly different colored dress, shoes and
purse (e.g. turquoise+yellow). I know that's a trendy look, but still I
would try to match "something"...
Just as you said, "Since the dress is itself solid color, I like the
idea of breaking it up with a pattern on the purse", so what I would
suggest is that you choose a patterned purse that "brings the colours
together" – say, e.g. lavender dress, beige purse with
lavender+turquoise embroideries and turquoise shoes ?
I have done this kind of mix–and–match in the past, and I think it
works well, especially with light/bright colors – it's slightly less
boring than same color shoes+purse, yet not too "loud"...

I am probably a little more conservative than most fashionistas here,
but I would not go with completelly different colored dress, shoes and
purse (e.g. turquoise+yellow). I know that's a trendy look, but still I
would try to match "something"...

I'm even more conservative than Teresa. I would find turquoise shoes
quite jarring with the OP's lovely dress. I'd go for tonal or neutral
shoes. If OP wants to bring in contrasting color, I'd do it with
purse.
