"cofarb" <do...@cofarb.com>
I got that pair of gorgeous red suede knee–high boots and I'm dying to wear
them. It's going to be in the mid 30s tomorrow night and I'd love to wear
the boots... What sayeth a.f. about red suede boots in May?

The only caveat might be suede and rain/snow – is it a dry 30's or a
rainy/snowy/slushy 30's?

I say it's not Memorial Day yet, so suede is still your friend. The
white shoes and the suede shoes are in what linguists call
"complementary distribution" as far as I'm concerned.
And "boo" to mid–30s weather in May!

Here is Portugal (warm spring weather) I see boots everywhere, from
stores to the office!
And they're not all white or suede – I see a lot of people wearing
brown/black leather boots still. I think boots are so easy to wear that
it's hard to put them aside before it gets really warm...
So, as long as they go well with the rest of the outfit and you feel
comfortable, go for it!

PS I would like to have a nice pair of red suede boots myself.

I'm planning to build the rest of the outfit around the boots––probably a
black skirt and a black top with some red accents. It's funny, but I look
forward to the dressing part of going out almost as much as I look forward
to the actual going out!

My first thought was that suede is more of a fall/winter thing, but
then I realized that I'm seeing a lot of suede handbags for spring, so
why not?? If it is still cool enough for boots, go for it. If it's
still mid–30s, you'll look less silly, IMO, wearing boots rather than
strappy heels, and your toes will thank you. :–)
The only caveat is to make sure the rest of the outfit says "spring"
and that can be a challenge. For example, suede boots might look wrong
with a linen or otherwise summery, lightweight skirt. Also, maybe I'm
being picky, but I would think that short sleeves or sleeveless top
would look silly with suede boots – it's like you can't make up your
mind about the season and the temperature.
I have a pair of chocolate brown suede boots, and they are incredibly
comfortable and lightweight. I could defintely see wearing them on a
mid–30 degree spring evening. I have this perfect skirt, Ann Taylor,
lined khaki with a little embroidery detailing in pink, chocolate and
mauve. It's from their fall line a few years ago. In the fall I wear it
with the boots and a mauve long sleeve rayon sweater with bell sleeves.
For a cool spring night or day, now that you have me thinking about it,
I might opt for a pink cotton cardigan set instead. The pink would
lighten up the whole outfit and say "spring" but the long sleeves of
the cardigan would look balanced with the boots.
Also another thing you might try is wearing the boots with a denim
skirt. Or, get a knee–length, long or 3/4 sleeve rayon dress in a
dramatic black and white pattern. That would look awesome with red
boots, and black & white is "in" right now. Check out BR for some
ideas.

SNIP Jen's great suggestions
I love all those looks. My biggest concern is that I'm so small that I
have
to be very careful about overdoing in terms of the volume of clothing and
particularly the number of different colored components. It's easy to
look
at myself in the mirror and see a full–sized person, but the reality is
that
it's easy for me to be overpowered. I *think* I've settled on a Max
Studio
jersey wrap dress (very dvf) that is a red and black rose design. I had
it
shortened to above–knee length; it has 3/4 length sleeves. It probably
sounds more wintery than it is, but the day has dawned more wintery than
it
*should* be anyway. People here are definitely still wearing wintery
clothes most days. (If I didn't love coats so much, I would seriously
consider moving to a warmer climate.)
I have a vintage (but contemporary looking) black wool knit (like
doubleknit) coat that has red collar and trim. I may wear that.
Otherwise,
a plain black knee–length lambskin jacket. It's not going to be a
shrinking
violet outfit!
I recently interviewed someone who is your size, she wore black boots
with red laces, black pants, black shirt with red trim. A great look and
I think it would work well for you.

doubleknit) coat that has red collar and trim.

For spring, I might veer away from all black with red boots as accent.
All black with boots in a lighter, spring color like pink might work,
but all black with red boots says "Fall" to me more than spring. I
would try to work in another color – and as I said in my earlier post,
black & white is big this spring and looks fresh. Check out this link

I might suggest working white into your outfit somehow. I like the idea
of a black & white print flouncy skirt, black top (but with at least
3/4 sleeves), and the red boots. Or go with a black skirt, but paired
with a b&w print halter top with a black (or red!) cardigan over it.
The graphic floral b&w wrap dress would look good with red boots too.
Alternatively, if you have a 3/4 length coat in b&w print, just throw
that over the black top, black skirt combo for a dash of drama. The
site seems to be sold out, but you might find in the BR stores that
beautiful b&w floral 3/4 sleeve silk jacket they were featuring on the
commercials earlier this spring. It had a red flower on the lapel??

I love all those looks. My biggest concern is that I'm so small that I have
to be very careful about overdoing in terms of the volume of clothing and
particularly the number of different colored components. It's easy to look
at myself in the mirror and see a full–sized person, but the reality is that
it's easy for me to be overpowered. I *think* I've settled on a Max Studio
jersey wrap dress (very dvf) that is a red and black rose design. I had it
shortened to above–knee length; it has 3/4 length sleeves. It probably
sounds more wintery than it is, but the day has dawned more wintery than it
*should* be anyway. People here are definitely still wearing wintery
clothes most days. (If I didn't love coats so much, I would seriously
consider moving to a warmer climate.)

Ohmygod! I am *loving* them. I've applied 3 coats of silicone spray (I

Still, they are the most gorgeous, well–made footwear I have ever owned. I

Oops, forgot that you are vertically challenged like me. Definetly nix
the BR silk floral jacket – I love the look, but the pattern is
definetly too overwhelming for us. Otherwise, you can still do pattern,
you just have to be pickier and look for smaller scale patterns!

particularly the number of different colored components.
Oops, forgot that you are vertically challenged like me. Definetly nix
the BR silk floral jacket – I love the look, but the pattern is
definetly too overwhelming for us. Otherwise, you can still do pattern,
you just have to be pickier and look for smaller scale patterns!
It's easy to look
at myself in the mirror and see a full–sized person, but the reality
is that
it's easy for me to be overpowered. I *think* I've settled on a Max
Studio
jersey wrap dress (very dvf) that is a red and black rose design. I
had it
shortened to above–knee length; it has 3/4 length sleeves.
It sounds perfect!
It probably
sounds more wintery than it is, but the day has dawned more wintery
than it
*should* be anyway. People here are definitely still wearing wintery
clothes most days. (If I didn't love coats so much, I would
seriously
consider moving to a warmer climate.)
I think jersey sounds temperature–appropriate. We are finally getting
some warm weather here, thank goodness.
I have a vintage (but contemporary looking) black wool knit (like
doubleknit) coat that has red collar and trim. I may wear that.
Otherwise,
a plain black knee–length lambskin jacket. It's not going to be a
shrinking
violet outfit!
It sounds great.

I think that I'm very un–a.f in that I wear whatever I want regardless of
the season, normally to be thermally comfortable. If it's 90degrees in Feb,
I'll wear a white sweater dress. I have a BR wrap dress that has minimal
cap sleeves, and I wear it with grey knee–high faux suede boots.
I say wear your new gorgeous red suede boots, season be damned.
Cheers,
ami
