It's so funny to see that subject again: the discussion on wearing
socks with sandals seems pretty recurrent on this forum. Some don't
like this look, other do... and there doesn't seem to have any
possible compromise between them!
So here is my opinion. This look is clearly generally pretty casual,
and I have to acknowledge that when worn by a man, I dislike it also.
On the other hand, a woman can wear a pretty pair of thin socks with
for example jeans and sandals: I think this look is very cute. I have
seen really pretty ads where a woman was wearing her socks with
sandals. At the Swiss National Expo, the hostesses were even all
dressed with a kaki suit, kaki socks and high heels sandals, and they
were really very nice looking.
Back to the initial subject. I have bought some pairs of fine thong
socks for my wife (white, light blue and pink). This allows her to
wear her thongs at home even during the cold Swiss winters. It seems
to be more confortable than the closed slippers, and I definitely
find
this look much cuter also. Indeed she never goes out with her thong
socks, so it's rather a cocooning look. But she can very well receive
friends at home with a nice pair of jeans, socks and thongs.
No matter the color or the temperature, socks with sandals are dorky
looking. Like someone else here has already stated, only the Japanese
women can pull this off. Socks and sandals go hand in hand with slacks
pulled up under the armpits and cinched tightly with a belt. If it's
cold enough to wear socks, for goodness sake, put on some decent shoes
and save your flipflops and sandals for warm summer months.
