putting the alt in alt fashion

"Margaret Robinson" <margaret.robin...@utoronto.ca>
So in what way is your look alt? Do you choose funky alternative or unusual
pieces to wear? Or is it in the way you put together the elements you
choose? Do you make your own pieces or alter things you find?
My fashion sensibilities come from old movies, and I favour a feminine film
noir sort of look. I like to update with forays into a goth or punk
aesthetic.
I tend to make a lot of my clothes. I made a pvc dress from a vintage Vogue
pattern. I recently made a winter muff and arm warmers in black and
burgundy velvet.
I'm currently working on some summer pieces. Several skirts and dresses and
a white trench coat to protect me from the sun. I'm thinking of wearing
matching gloves this summer, but I'm concerned about how hot they might get.

my "alt" is definitely influenced by my yoga practice. I wear Indian
print tops and wide legged trousers on my off days, combined with
birkenstock closed toe shoes (winter) or sandals (summer). I would say
that I'm kind of classic with hippie twists...

Classics with an ethnic twist. Love combining higher end items with stuff I
might find second–hand or find at a funky Asian or African iimport shop.
Fave look at the moment: Dark brown suede mini, turquoise "indian print"
t–shirt with bell sleeves bought on the local market, dark brown riding
boots.
Searching for a dashiki to wear with pink linen trousers when the weather
finally gets warm. Will combine this with dark green Gucci sandals (kitten
heel––5 years old) and gray Gucci bag (also from 2000).
Bought plain V necked T–shirts (3 for 29.99) in turquoise (guess what my
favorite color is), black and white and am thinking of styling them with
applique or beading somehow, not quite sure yet.

Well, despite the fact that I'm one of those sad goth girls who is
pierced and tattooed and who will no doubt (le sob!) regret her choices
when she's old and grey ;), I adore couture and like to keep abreast of
fashion trends and reinventions, and incorporate them where I feel it's
"me" to do so.

a suggestion Circe that is being done here in LA and commanding big $$ for
this.. on tees (or make that $$$)
you might want to get a studder machine (one of those hand ones) and get
some nice studs or crystals (doesn't have to be swarovski) and plan out an
interesting design: a cross, butterfly, skull, dragon, flower.. large or
small. Large works well on the back. small works well on the chest or on the
sleeve on the bicep..
you might also want to think about doing some cross dye on the tees and then
doing some studs on the shirts.. would be really cute to do faux jewels
around the vneck too in a coordinated color pattern. Choose contrasting
stones with a tiny bit of a deep azure..
it's a thought..

My alt is to take basics and pair things with different kinds of colors. I
started wearing yellow about 3 years ago.. ditto that kiwi/lime too. The
spring/summer colors have always been a fave.. so it's all in my closet..
just not in all the styling that I need.
but I would not only wears these colors with neutrals like black, white,
stone/khaki but with taupe, navy, grey and certain shades would work well
with burgundy too. I like mixing it up.. I have a marc jacobs 2 tone print
cord skirt that I have a rose silk as well as an ivory silk vintage style
blouse.. I have camis and I got this cool burgundy no wale ribbon tie blazer
that works really well. I do mix the expensive with the not so expensive..
(the jacket was from urban outfitters on sale (50) and the blouses came from
ebay and also VS on sale.
I also have things made. I have this gorgeous assymetrical jacket that is
done in a metallic black/charcoal/gunmetal (heavy on the blue
cast)/copper/caramel with a black chenille collar and cuffs.. it's hard to
describe but it's amazing with black leather pants or reg black pants. have
to find a black pencil skirt and would love to find the right pants in
another shade that works with this.
I have usually tweak the traditional with unusual jewelry, shoes and
handbags

After some observation and some pricey castoffs that seemed like urgent
acquisitions at the time, I've gotten jaded about snapping up things
pushed by savvy marketers as "must–haves." I get what looks good on
me, not on a supermodel, in a few select colors. What's "alt" is that
I'm a fearless mixer: Brazilian, Asian or British imports, Hot Topic,
Earl, Gucci, bebe, etc. I'll buy a belt in the little girls' section,
an ironic t–shirt from the boy's dept, or a men's silver belt buckle.
It all ends up with the same hard–edged/sweet vibe. Although I don't
really try to define it, my style's easily identifiable by others.
When I purposely depart from what comes naturally and wear a calculated
"business" or "chic" combination, everyone can tell it's an
uncomfortable costume. Conversely, friends several states away have
spotted things that "looked like" me, sent them over and they were a
perfect fit, color and style. I felt so comfy and happy in them that
total strangers complimented the look. I'll never pull together an
exact runway replica; there'll always be a twist, because I just can't
seem to stay with the "stock" configuration.

Interesting thread––and I should probably give my response more thought than
simply saying:
Mixing informal pieces with dressier pieces––velvet with denim or coarse
linen with lace. I have to be careful to not overdo it though because it
can quickly be too much, especially on a small frame. I try to be
especially careful not mixing too many colors because I end up looking even
shorter than my statuesque 61 inches.
