I have a huge collection of boots, more of the low variety than high.
I would like some tips on how to clean them. They are not particularly
dirty but have been showing the wear after the winter snows, etc. Many
would probably toss them and just buy new but it strikes me that there
is really nothing wrong with them, they just need a little TLC. So
what are your tips for keeping boots and shoes in tip top shape?
Salt stain remover? vinegar? Polish? Saddle soap? Lexol? silicone
spray?? Pls advise.
I don't do much more than use a barely damp cloth to remove salt and
"shmutz" during the boot/snow/slush season. BUT...before I put away my
boots in the spring, I use some sort of leather care product (usually a
"creme" or cream or wax) to clean and protect the leather. I'll sometimes
use a liquid polish, too. Then, before putting the boots back on the road
in the fall, I spray them with a weatherproofing product like Camp Dry.
Just make sure that the product is designed to be used on the type of
leather you have; some of the products can be used on suede and nubuck;
others cannot. Read labels carefully.
New boots (and my suede coats, leather bags, etc.) receive one or more coats
of weatherproofing spray before I put them into use. The time and effort
will be repaid by years of service.
