German Newsserver to Begin Charging in April

"Claire in SF" <clairi...@aol.com>
I just checked the http://news.individual.net/ website and there is an
announcement that news.individual.net aka "the german newsserver" will no
longer be free starting April 1, 2005! They will charge 10E/year.
If you are still on News.CIS.DFN.DE there are no changes/charges, but I
think they forced most/many of us to move over to a news.individual.net
account a while back so we'll have to pay or else switch to another service.
I don't know when they announced this change but it's too bad because some
of the AOLers could have used this free server. Maybe they announced it
concurrent with AOL's announcement so they wouldn't be deluged with AOLers
looking for free ng service.
My ISP provides a newsserver, I just never bothered to switch over so now I
will.

As if newsgroup service is SUPPOSED to be free? It does take some
resources to provide it.

If you're paying $23.95 a month to get on the Internet (or AOL's
version of it), an additional 10 Euro/year is less than 5%
additional... a drop in the bucket.
Of course, it's undoubtedly possible to pay less and get more.
Maybe they announced it concurrent with AOL's announcement

They've been considering it for a while.
I'd suspect the deluge of AOL users would probably push it over the
brink given what they did when AOL added FTP.

I'm not sure if there is a connection but it certainly could be. I've
still got the old one as well as individual so I'm not sure what I'll do.
Don't use it much anymore so why bother?

Yeah, most ISP's do offer a newsserver so it shouldn't be much of a
problem other than for the AOL users. Of course their are other free
ones out there but I'd say individual is worth paying for as it is quite
dependable and picks up the posts quite well (some aren't so complete).

On the one hand, it's too bad it won't be free anymore. On the other hand,
we are talking about approximately $1.09/month (inclusive of taxes). They
aren't exactly charging an arm and a leg here.....

I read on another NG that they're beginning the fees because of the AOL

this new fee as pretty small and insignificant.
Of course, Spanglie Home Companion, one could go to the proverbial
horse's mouth... which says the decision has been under consideration
for a while.
I'd suspect that they're swamped with people who are installing duct
tape over AOL's quality baling wire.
Somebody over at the other NG said it comes out to about 13 bucks
American.
$13.0542, as of the wee small hours of the morning.

I'm coming in late on this, but maybe it will help someone. There is a
newsgroup: alt.free.newservers that discusses free news servers (as well
as a lively discussion of the Berlin server issue). I found this one
there: www.x–privat.org (note, no E on privat). I've signed up on that
as a backup. I haven't used it yet, since I'm still using individual.net
and I've also discovered that my own isp's newsgroup service has been
upgraded to allow more downloads and is easier to use. I'm going to
start using it again, with the other free one as a backup.

I've been using the German newsserver ever since some kind AFer first posted
about it here. I've had nothing but super easy and problem–free access to
alt.fashion. Best of all, their CS is incredible. If there is a newsgroup
that isn't on the server, you can email them and within a day, they have not
only answered your email, but have also added the newsgroup.
Considering I've reaped years of service from them and have gotten so much
joy out of reading alt.fashion, I gladly paid the small subscription fee.
