AOL no longer offers newsgroup access

I just got this post from AOL when I signed on to alt.fashion today. What is
going on?

It appears AOL is not providing newsgroup service any more. There have been
lots of posts about this over the last month, so if you google, you'll find
suggestions for substitutes.

As of February 9th AOL will discontinue the access they provide to the Usenet
newsgroups. Being my usual manic depression self I kind of surfed around
looking for more information and this is what I found out. AOL is claiming
that they find that their members don't use the access as much, that there is
so much span on the newsgroups and that the popularity of blogs is decreasing
the interests in the newsgroups as well.
They provide options for those wanting to still access the newsgroups outside
of AOL. Now while I have free agent and a newserver that provides access to
newsgroups I don't get access to the binary groups. I can't view or post to
them – something that I could do using AOL!

Another AOL'er checking in. Yes, I tried today, and it's not letting
me access jack.
Ok, now what do I do. Google just seems clumsey. Any suggestions???

I use individual.net with Outlook Express. Super easy. AOL seemed clumsy
to me.
Individual.net is free.

If you have a different ISP other than AOL...I suggest downloading
Thunderbird from Mozilla.org..it's free and quite easy to navigate...but
again you'd have to have a different ISP. I had loads of problems
because of Comcast and finally was able to access via Thunderbird.

I can probably get used to the navigation of google, clumsy as it is
and far inferior to AOL's newsreader, but the top few posts are
overlapping ads on the right, which makes it very difficult to read!

As Stars mentioned, all you need is to subscribe to individual.net (or
any other newsserver) and that will give you access with Outlook/
Thunderbird/Netscape/or one of many other newsreaders available. AOL is
fine as your ISP with the newsserver.

AOL invented T9. T9 is cool.
Also, after we get rid of AOL, what will the aolophobics have to whine
about? <grin/duck>
