AOL USERS

holliesademoc...@aol.com (HolliesaDemocrat)
Apparently the rumors are true, this popped up when I logged on to the group.
Please Note: The AOL Newsgroup service will be discontinued in early 2005.
For members using AOL over a dial–up connection, you will no longer be able to
access Newsgroups. If you have a separate high–speed connection, you can
contact your broadband provider to see if they offer Newsgroups. Newsgroup
services can often be accessed through a third party reader, such as Mozilla
Thunderbird (http://www.mozilla.org/projects/thunderbird/).
Alternatively, you can access Newsgroups via Google at
http://groups.google.com/.
We apologize for this inconvenience.

Any way to complain or alternatively chop someone's head off at Aohell?

I think the best way is to complain and act like *IF* they were to make some
changes, you'd stay. Then abruptly tell them point blank that you
*immediately* want to drop your account when they say that it's an
unapproachable topic for debate and that they've made up their mind. When a
bunch of people drop them in an abrupt manner, they'll soon get the picture
that they have screwed everyone over.
That's what I'd do. I'd tweak with 'em and make them think I was willing to
negotiate and then abruptly cancel and get a new account elsewhere with a
quickness. :–)

Time Warner is reportedly trying to sell AOL, Microsoft did their due
diligence and turned 'em down.

Inconvenience? Try "permanent reduction in service".

Wonder why they'd sell it? I'd have thought AOL would be a cash cow for
them...

The cash cow apparently has bovine spongiform encephalitis.

Apparently my writing is too subtle for you as well for I never said
any such thing. Instead I pointed out the rather dubious nature of the
message at that time and noted that AOL has certain procedures for
notifiying members of policy changes.
I can go through that message line–by–line if your reading
comprehension skills aren't up to the task.

That was my experience, too, a number of times.
And when they didn't update their ng interface yet worked extensively on
changing and tweaking the look of everything else, I figured their ng
service was doomed.

I checked over here, and as of this writing, (the afternoon of January
25, 2005) there is absolutely no mention of AOL's discontinuation of
providing Usenet newsgroups. Obviously they're trying to be very quiet
about this. http://corp.aol.com/press/index.shtml
However, there's an article over here on Betanews that has some
insights that I had previously been unaware of:
http://www.betanews.com/article/AOL_Pulls_Plug_on_Newsgroup_Service/1106664611
My suspicion is that the plug–pulling has something to do with
liability and copyright issues, not to mention the fact that almost all
of their tech support is now outsourced to other countries where
English is not the primary language. There was a settlement between AOL
and the author Harlan Ellison, and somehow, I think the liability
assignations in this case may have had something to do with the
decision to discontinue newsgroups. Maybe this decision wasn't teh sole
reason, but there are now culpability issues that exist because of this
case that were not as strictly defined before:
http://www.timewarner.com/corp/newsroom/pr/0,20812,670452,00.html
Anyway, my two cents worth is to advise AOLers to go immediately to
Google Groups and start learning how to use that interface. It's a fix
that's (at least for me so far) adequate and worth the trouble.
Sorry for the completely off–topic post. I'll do better next time. :–)

Yes, apparently the tech I talked to on the phone was an idiot!
I'm so bummed. I LOVE the aol newsgroup reader. It's the secondary reason
I've never switched from AOL. The one on Google seems so cumbersome. Can
anyone recommend a different reader or one that would be similar to AOLs
format?
Thanks.
