Finally – actual confirmation from AOL

rande...@aol.comnokkkrap (RandeeFW)
Please Note: The AOL Newsgroup service will be discontinued in early 2005.
For members using AOL over a dial–up connection, you will no longer be able to
access Newsgroups. If you have a separate high–speed connection, you can
contact your broadband provider to see if they offer Newsgroups. Newsgroup
services can often be accessed through a third party reader, such as Mozilla
Thunderbird (http://www.mozilla.org/projects/thunderbird/).
Alternatively, you can access Newsgroups via Google at
http://groups.google.com/.
We apologize for this inconvenience.

Call 1–866–487–3638 and Newsguy will give you 13 months for $39.95 –
newsreader and email – what's not to love?

I also received this pop–up window when I accessed newsgroups via AOL
today. I hate using google, but I may end up doing it that way....or
eventually just phase myself out of reading them – unless someone has a
free newsgroup reader they recommend. I don't feel like paying for
another service!
bummer!

Yep, I got the same confirming pop up from AOL. And yeah, it bites but
I'm getting used to reading/posting via Google and so the hell with
AOL. A plague on both their houses. Whatever.

Use something like Free Agent or Outlook Express to access it.

True confession time:
I moved in August 2002 and got lured by a Comcast DSL/digital cable
combo. Biiig mistake. I had trouble getting someone to even come out
and get either the cable or dsl hooked up (remember this EMD? You were
visiting and the stupid cable guy came, thought nobody was home because
we didn't hear the doorbell and left!). Then there's the Comcast phone
tree with its multilevels of hell, tendency to disconnect callers, and
then being on hold forever just to get problems resolved. For all these
reasons I never did get an email address w/ comcast (they don't allow
you to activate one online, you have to CALL them).
Sooo, I've been posting to AF via Google since, well, August 2002. And
it's been fine. The biggest problem I've had with it was the huge delay
in messages showing up but the recent facelift has resolved that and
made it more or less real time. It was annoying having the server dump
duplicate posts onto AF a few weeks ago but I can count on one hand the
times that's happened since I started using google – and anyway that
may have been on Yahoo's end, I can't remember exactly what caused it.
Bottom line, using Google isn't as bad as it's cracked up to be. About
all you'll suffer is being branded an unsophisticated net user ;–) and
I don't give a rat's ass if anyone does that to me.

I was going to post about this. I have been using it for ages with no real
problems that I recall. I prefer using it with a newsreader than going the
google route.

Guess they don't read af then :–)
Actually other groups either as there seems to be a lot of AOL users and
usenet has been increasing in traffic every year from all servers...

Once you use a dedicated newsreader you'll wonder how you ever did
without it. Free Agent is good, but for Windows I preferred Gravity.
With OS–X Macintosh, then Halime is the way I go. All are free...
