Please reconsider and have pity on us. At one point yesterday morning
(the snow moved in several hours earlier than expected), we had virtual
blizzard conditions–– < 1/4 mile visibility, heavy heavy snow, and
30–40 MPH winds. It's March. In DC. We should hae buds on the trees
and mud. Hear my plea.

Snowing and overcast in Chicago. Its been drizzly and in the 30's all

up some items I had left successfully won in an auction. Back home and
then off to a "po di musica" rehearsal with NBF Trilby. Lunch with
Trilby followed. Bikram yoga in the late afternoon. Later I will
attend the "po di musica" with my DS. DH will be at a meeting for a

LAST SATURDAY OF JANUARY 2005... Woke up and got a drink, along with a
bit of Internet stuff. Then, took a nap. Called the Farm, it snowed in
Kansas City. Picked up a package at the apartment office and paid my
rent for February (close enough to the end of the month). Then, out to
Best Buy (a USB flash drive, bought with a Christmas gift card from
one of my SILs), and SuperTarget (mostly groceries but also including
a box of Tide). Went out for lunch (tortilla soup and enchilada/nacho
combo plate). Rest of the day will be around the disaster area known
as my apartment. (One of my co–workers says, "If you can see the
floor, it's not that bad." You can see large patches of floor, but...)
I can always give conference calls an encore listen while I do
trashcan triage; in this week's copious supply of calls, the CEO of
Brunswick Corporation was quite interesting (he was talking about
system engineering of watercraft and creating an integrated plug and
play system solution, along with the dumping of outboard motors). For
the day outside:

Thank you. As it turned out, I didn't have to worry about what I'd wear, rather
I worried about what the girls would wear. Take two girls (one teen, one tween)
who normally wear jeans or cords or khakis, try to get them dressed in

I know it's bad form to follow up on one's own article, and I know it's
not like a last minute wardrobe change is so exciting, but I think
you'll forgive me the faux pas given the context. When I went to take
that skirt out of the closet, my eye happened upon a skirt I bought
back in October. It was a little too small––OK, a size smaller than
what I wore––but I was losing weight and I really liked it and so I
bought it. In hope. So this morning when my eye happened up on it, I
decided it was time to try it on again. Imagine my surprise when the

black and white houndstooth skirt, 2 partially stiched–down pleats in

Hmmm, whenever I've seen a "dragon lady" in a modern television drama,
they are almost always wearing a red suit, so I guess sliding into
"dragon lady" territory is one shortfall of wearing one.
I always think of long red nails, rather than suits, but I know what you
mean.
Any other outfits of note?
Yes––but unfortunately, not good ones. A few of the guests seem to feel
that it's more important to wear something red than it is to wear
something appropriate for the time of day, so there were a couple of
women in red chiffon–y evening–type dresses. My friends and I acted duly
catty. ;)
On a more serious note––mostly I noticed the jewelry, which was very
serious loot.

Woo hoo! Hooray for you! (As for me, if I don't staple my jaws shut, all
my hard work will be undone. Ack!)
Chilly and overcast with a good chance of a few inches of snow tonight.
Today was a friend of mine's annual St. Valentine's tea party at the
Ritz. Ladies are requested to wear red, so I wore:
red wool princess–seamed short–sleeved dress from the Talbots
sheer leg colored hose
black calfskin high–heeled RL boots
black suede Gucci shoulder bag with a cute little red and white Hermes
"twinky" tied in a bow on one end of the handle (waves to AJ!)
vintage red wool coat with black fox collar
black cashmere–lined kidskin gloves
lots of jewelry: a yellow gold Tiffany "Signature" necklace with pave
diamonds; Etoile Twist bracelet, usual yellow gold watch, fancy smancy
engagement/wedding rings, usual pearl studs
The party was really fun this year. A friend of mine who wants me to
join a board introduced me to a lot of women, and guess what, children.
One of them actually was wearing the Celine "Oprah"/Town&Country suit!
Just as I predicted! The suit was lovely, but looked very hard to
wear––that portrait collar is really bare, and the cut of the jacket
wouldn't flatter the boobalicious. This woman was slim with very short
hair brushed straight back, a platinum and diamond Cartier pendant with
ruby drops on a black silk cord, and a couple of serious
platinum/diamond rings. She looked great, but the effect was a lot less
lady–who–lunches and a lot more dragon lady than you'd think.

black cotton twinset, v–neck shell and collarless cardigan with black
lace insert around placket of both shell and cardigan
black and white houndstooth skirt, 2 partially stiched–down pleats in
front and 2 in back, just–at–the–knee length, with black satin ribbon
trim around waist and on stitched down sections of pleats
no scarf, everything else the same
The skirt sounds very cute and congratulations on your weight loss.

Hmmm, whenever I've seen a "dragon lady" in a modern television drama,
they are almost always wearing a red suit, so I guess sliding into

Interesting exchange in many ways. I have the suit and am not flat,
(although I must admit I have no idea what "boobalicious" means in terms
of cup size). I had no problem wearing the suit before I was pregnant and
hope to be back in it sometime afterwards. It's a lovely suit, well
fitting, very flattering (on me anyway), exquisitely designed (Michael
Kors for his last season at Celine) and exquisitely made.
In my experience, and again, I stress that I actually own and have worn
on several occasions the suit in question, there's nothing "dragon lady"
about it, so I must conclude that either there's something in the person
whom the poster saw wearing it or in the poster herself that would prompt
such a comment.

A little correction: Veronica, who didn't see the lady in question, was
the one who introduced the term "dragon lady" to the discussion.
And FYI: the term "boobalicious" refers to women whose primary fit
concern is the bodice. ("Bootylicious" refers to women whose primary fit
concern is the lower half of the back of their garments.)
IME, one has to be at least a C–cup before the fit of one's bodice
becomes overly tricky. If one's back and ribcage are small, one can get
as far as a D–cup before the fit of one's bodice presents a challenge.
Now, that Celine suit has an exaggeratedly bare portrait cut, so it
shows a lot of skin. Also, the buttons are large, about the size of a
quarter, and sewn into a trapezoidal shape, where the top row of buttons
is wider than the bottom. While this flatters the waistline, it would
definitely place more emphasis on the bust. Full–busted women are warned
against wearing anything very low cut, because it can look vulgar. We
are also warned not to wear double–breasted jackets, because they place
more emphasis than is strictly necessary on our already noteworthy
endowment.
From the looks of it, I would hazard a guess that that suit jacket
wouldn't work for anyone who wore more than a B–cup.

Priscilla

Sunny and in the 40s. I'm back from vacation and the reality of
February is all too real, especially as we're suppooed to get a major
snowstorm tomorrow here in DC, ahahaha. We spent about a week at the
campground at Walt Disney World where we took full advantatge of our
time there––we lucked out with the "extra magic hours" at the Magic

was the time it took you to walk up to the the boarding area. Or you
could get off one ride, like the Buzz Lightyear ride (waving to Trilby)
and just get back on. The crowds were down at the other Disney parks
we visited and the campground itself could probably have kept us busy
for a few days.
After that it was on to Flagler Beach for another week. Here we camped
right along the beach wall, with the Atlantic as our backyard. This
was just fabulous, and the drive along AIA as we went back and forth
from the track in Daytona was spectacular any time of day. We had a
great time at all of the races, and with the special garage passes we
had, we were able to do things like visit the garages and watch the
crews load up the stuff for races, see the cars go through inspection,
chat with drivers, and, in a pretty neat situation, sit in the pits
themselves for the IROC race and watch the race from that vantage
point. Our seats for the Daytona 500 ended up being pretty good, and
even though both of our drivers didn't get to finish the race (The
Engineer's driver blew his engine and went out at lap 7 and, after
being in the top 5 for a good part of the race, mine got collected in a
big crash on lap 187), we thoroughly enjoyed that Race Week (and we're
off to Bristol in about a month so we'll get to see our guys do better
then). The weather was absolutely perfect––sunny every day and even if
a few nights at the track were cold, the warm days more than made up
for that. I'm very blonde and a bit tan, and I have to say that I had
a truly amazing time, which makes the transition back to regular life
better.

Thanks! :) The spring collection is really beautiful (inspired by Audrey

Spring II comes out around the beginning of February and that is even *more*

I agree with you about the maternity clothing issues, too. We have a
surprising amount of pregnant women coming in checking to see if we have a
maternity line, and I feel bad always telling them the same thing. I think
someone pitched this idea to the designers a while back (one of my co–workers
and I were actually discussing this about a month ago), but I have not
heard/read anything regarding a new maternity line. However, today I read an
interesting report that was sent to all of our stores regarding major changes
that Banana Republic is making for fall 2005...
* Pants specifically made to fit curvier women better (looser in hips & less
full in the legs like the Camden style which I believe they are phasing out)
* Coats that are sized numerically as opposed to XS–XL for a better fit
* Sweater quality will be increased since they are switching to a different
mill that finishes the fabric differently to help prevent pilling & general
wear
* Shoe construction will also be increased with better soles, fit, and better
heels (our shoes can be pretty shoddily made at times, so this is definitely a
good thing!)
* More accessory choices for men
There are a bunch more I can't remember off the top of my head, but it was
interesting to read.
Anyway, was glad to hear about your little one and I'm so happy that the
pregnancy is going well :)

they had been marked down *and* they had my size in stock!
Yay! I love when that happens!!
<<< Cute outfits, hope you had a great time! BTW, BR's new clothes are
fab! I was able to buy several of their new skirts and pants that my
dressmaker will be able to modify for me. :) >>>
Thanks! :) The spring collection is really beautiful (inspired by
Audrey Hepburn in "Roman Holiday" and the final episodes of "Sex and
the City").
The designers have an excellent collection on their hands this time out
(the skirts especially are absolutely lovely). I know parts of the early
fall collection, I think it was, were less than well–received, but this
early spring one's a hit! Excellent job!
I purchased four skirts and two pair of pants that my dressmaker said she
could work with:
* Black, gray & white floral silk flared skirt
* White & black large plaid silk 8–gored bias circle skirt
* White w black flowers silk dupioni inverted pleat
* Robin's egg blue with white & black tropical flowers print
silk 8–gore flippy skirt
* Brown and pink pinstripe Martins
* Gray and pink plaid Harrisons (I'll also have her tone down the
cuffs on each of the pants as they're too wide for me.)
Spring II comes out around the beginning of February and
that is even *more* TDF. I wish I could post pictures now, the
clothes look so beautiful in the concept books.
You've whetted my interest! Can't wait to see it!
I agree with you about the maternity clothing issues, too. We have a
surprising amount of pregnant women coming in checking to see if we
have a maternity line, and I feel bad always telling them the same
thing.
They have an untapped and never–ending niche to fill. Why they aren't at
last testing the waters, I don't understand.
I think someone pitched this idea to the designers a while
back (one of my co–workers and I were actually discussing this about a
month ago), but I have not heard/read anything regarding a new
maternity line.
Well, they (and the suits) should know that if *one* person asks about
something, thousands more consumers are out there wondering about the
same thing.
However, today I read an interesting report that was
sent to all of our stores regarding major changes that Banana Republic
is making for fall 2005...
* Pants specifically made to fit curvier women better (looser in hips
& less full in the legs like the Camden style which I believe they are
phasing out)
* Coats that are sized numerically as opposed to XS–XL for a better fit
That's a great service they're providing there even though it'll mean
adding patterns and doing more cutting. Consumers will have a better fit.
* Sweater quality will be increased since they are
switching to a different mill that finishes the fabric differently to
help prevent pilling & general wear
Another wonderful thing for consumers; one of the reasons I stopped
buying BR sweaters was not because I didn't like the styles, cuts or
colors, but because of the quality. Glad to hear about this.
* Shoe construction will also be increased with better soles, fit, and
better heels (our shoes can be pretty shoddily made at times, so this
is definitely a good thing!)
I've never tried BR shoes, but this sounds like a great deal too.
* More accessory choices for men
There are a bunch more I can't remember off the top of my head, but it
was interesting to read.
Thanks for posting this, Laura. I'm glad to read about them.
Anyway, was glad to hear about your little one and I'm so happy that
the pregnancy is going well :)
