This pisses me off. I only have AOL for my address, which I have had since
1994, and to read newsgroups offline at work. This really bugs me.

For people who may want to stick to AOL if the usenet discontinuation is
a fact:
My personal ISP has usenet news but it's frequently down, slow or there
are just a lot of articles missing. Otherwise, it's great. I've got
Newsguy for usenet only at $39.95/year and I'm very, very happy with it.
It's extremely rare for it to be down (I've had it for almost 3 years
now and I only had trouble with delays in articles once). I do get a LOT
of spam at my Newsguy email account since I post from it but I don't
care about that much. I just don't read the email that goes to my usenet
account and figure that anyone I "talk" to on usenet regularly either
already has access to my Yahoo or personal email addresses or is smart
enough to know whether or not I'd be willing to give them the
information privately if they requested an address in public (here).

I emailed my Sooper Secret Well Connected AOL Source (who works deep within
AOL's HQ in Virginia) to ask about the rumored crisis or hoax, as the case
might be.
My source went straight to the people who would know about this, and the answer
is yes, the posting is legitimate, the rumor is not a rumor, and AOL will be
discontinuing newsgroup access in the not–too–distant future.
If you'll excuse me now, I have to go roast a large crow for dinner.

Another group I read had a post from an AOLer and said that for the last three
years there are rumours every January that the service is going to be
discontinued and it is not true for this year as well.
That said, I notice an improvement over the last day.

No, but thanks for bringing it up. I must admit that sometimes I just
don't look into things well enough, especially once I've concluded that
a problem is out of control and not worth dealing with (which is why I
no longer read the Newsguy email I get and some perfectly pleasant AFers
may very well have emailed me at my posting address and thought I was
blowing them off... which is true but unintentional since my blowing
them off is a by–product of my decision not to ever look at email going
to my usenet account ever again). I got a bunch of emails from Newsguy
about Spam–Hippo before I gave up on it and just assumed it was
spam–filtering software that functioned at the levels of their mail
servers (and failed miserably) rather than something I had control over.
I'll check it out and give it another chance.

I have been on the phone for the last 70 minutes about this and still don't
have a definitive answer. One of the 4 "techs" I spoke to seem to think the
AOL email was indeed real. In fact he sent me a copy of it which I will post
below. As Usenet activity is nearly dead via AOL I am going to have to believe
this isn't a bogus email. None of the 4 "techs" I spoke with knew what either
newsgroups or Usenet were. This doesn't inspire confidence. Of course the
irony here is probably very few will even see this post.

Please Note: The AOL Newsgroup service will be discontinued in early 2005.
For members using AOL over a dial–up connection, you will no longer be able
to
access Newsgroups. If you have a separate high–speed connection, you can
contact your broadband provider to see if they offer Newsgroups. Newsgroup
services can often be accessed through a third party reader, such as Mozilla
Thunderbird (http://www.mozilla.org/projects/thunderbird/).
Alternatively, you can access Newsgroups via Google at
http://groups.google.com/.
We apologize for this inconvenience.

Randee: A friend of mine who called AOL said the same thing. The tech had the
AOL message boards and the newsgroups confused. Didn't understand the
difference. You are right...it does not inspire confidence.

Thanks! It always helps to RTFM :) Also, I had a separate identity in MS
Entourage to download my Newsguy mail and never even looked at the
web–based mail reader. If I had, I'd have realized that Spam Hippo was
right there as it's own tab with instructions and all :) I did set it
last night and since I've got no mail at all, it's fine (I should have
gotten at least 50 pieces of junk since yesterday, based on the recently
flow of spam).
