Old Navy Tees

bbn...@aol.com (Bbnuke)
I was going to get some of these, as long as they are on sale, for my niece's
BD. However, she is in that blossoming stage and is kind of self conscious
about the new developments.
So, my question is this: are these the really thin, clingy type material? (The
kind that cling even if you get a larger size?) I know they are pushing the
layered look, so that's why I wondered.
TIA,
Bebe

I recently ordered one online to use for the gym. It's a bit
too thin and clingy for me, so I've reverted to my tried–and–true
Lands' End Tees (more expensive but last for years).

I have most of the colors of both LE and ON tees. Overall, I like my ON tees
better and they were half the price. (In fact, I got three more in the UPS
today.) They seem to be pretty equal in terms of durability. I did *not*
buy the tight fit ones. (The ON tees come in three types of fit.)

I happen to have the newspaper circular her handy as I was just reviewing it
earlier this evening. Not sure whether you are interested in the styles for
Girls or for Women, but here's what I know.
If you are referring to the tees for Women, some of them are and some
aren't. I've also tried on a number of the items personally so this is from
my experience.
What they call the "layering" wide scoopneck tees and camis and definitely
very clingy and thin. You'd definitely want to wear more than one. They feel
tissue thin. But the prices are good so you can get 2 camis plus a tee for
just over $20.
As to the 3 different "fits" in the regular tees, here's how I'd describe
them:
Tiny Fit – Fairly sheer but not tissue thin like the layering pieces, fits
tightly but stretches, feels like nothing on. I have worn two layered
together and worn one under a cardigan, etc.
Perfect Fit – More like what you'd consider your standard sporty tee. Not
sheer, fitted but not tight. Love these! Great price! Other tees are too
baggy on my and only add visual pounds.
Easy Fit– This is not sheer but not totally opaque in white either. It is a
looser fit and doesn't fit snugly. However it's not really the kind of tee
that the younger set goes for.
In terms of the products for Girls, they are different from the Women's
versions. I looked at these last week specifically because we are buying
bday presents for a neice, too! The s/s tees for girls are not sheer but are
sort of fitted. The camis for girls (solid, dotted, etc.) are definitely
different from the camis for women. The girls camis are not sheer, have a
shelf bra in the larger sizes, and are fitted in a lycra blend.

The ones for layering are typically very thin and scoop neck with no defined
bottom edge. The more basic t's (usually are on special for 2 for $18 or
$22) are a bit thicker and cut more "normal." I am currently *very*
pregnant and can comfortably wear an XL in the basic t's. I think just
about any teenager would love clothes from Old Navy and she can always make
a return. You've made a safe choice, though.

One thing I love about Old Navy shirts is to check the tag when you
shop for them, some say Sheer, and some say Perfect Fit. The Sheer
ones are a bit, well, sheer. They're a tad see through and tight. The
perfect fit ones should fit comfortably and not be to clingy or
revealing. The perfect fit ones also do not cling if you get a size
larger than you normally wear, but buying the proper size will make
them form fit, but she won't die of suffocation from it being to tight.
I'd suggest asking for a gift reciept and mentioning to your niece that
she can exchange them for a different size/color/style if she doesn't
like how they look and/or feel.
Goodluck!

THANK YOU everyone for the quick, very detailed and informed replies!! I think
I will buy a couple of each kind, give her the gift receipt, and let her decide
what she is comfortable with.
You ladies never fail to give good advice and insight...

More feedback on Old Navy tees:
I finally decided to check out these tee shirts since they have some
beautiful colors right now. I bought a bunch of M and L in Tiny fit
(3/4 sleeve scoop neck), Perfect fit (SS tee), and Easy fit (SS tee)
and brought 'em home to see what they are all about.
Here's my take on the 3 fits:
The Tiny fit are very thin and soft fabric, but not see–through sheer.
This gives a soft clinging feeling (that I don't like, and find hot in
warm weather). Don't think these would last through too many washings.
M a little tight. L too big.
Perfect fit were the best – medium weight cotton, nicely fitted through
ribs/waist and not too long in length. Fitted, but not clingy. Also
the neckline is good – not too high, not scooped – just what I consider
a normal t–shirt neckline. Cute little cap sleeves on the SS sleeve
one I kept. M is good fit, altho a little tighter than I normally wear
in a T. But the L is much longer in length (way too long for me, and
I'm 5'8" but shortwaisted) and only a little wider than the M.
Easy fit – Not as fitted through the ribs/waist/hips as the others. Has
a really small high neckhole that to me feels too tight/choking. If
you like a higher crew neckline in your T shirts, then you might like
this one. M fit me, L too big.
I kept a SS Perfect fit tee in a gorgeous saturated Caribbean blue (a
deep turquoise). It'll be interesting to see if it lasts more than one
summer. Thanks to the others for their descriptions of the 3 fits
– it was helpful to know a bit ahead of time.

I thought the same thing but was surprised at how well they survived the
wash. These are among my fave T's now for fit.

Good to know. Hope my Perfect Fit tee holds up well in the wash too!
