1.. Is using foundation or powder all the time bad for your skin?
Not necessarily, but it can be. The product formulas need to be right for your
skin type and not contain any ingredients to which you are sensitve or
allergic. If you have oily skin don't use formulas for dry skin and vice versa.
As far as particular sensitivities or allergies you can only answer that for
yourself. You might try starting with fragrancefree or sensitiveskin
formulas first though, so sensitivity or allergy quetions don't have to be
answered by trialanderror. Also, with foundation and/or powder it's best to
always apply LESS than you think you need and be sure to completely remove all
of it before bedtime each night.
2.. I remove black spots off my face. Is it a bad idea to put foundation
or cream after you've removed the black spots?
Not sure what you mean by "black spots" but if you mean blackheads then it's
possible the wrong foundation or cream might make them worse. Avoid greasy or
oilcontaining formulas. Also, if blackheads are a continual problem you might
consider seeing a dermatologist or esthetician. Continually removing them
yourself can cause scarring.
3.. Is eye liner bad for your eyes? Are there certain kinds that are bad?
No, as long as what you are using for eyeliner is a product specifically meant
to be used around the eyes. Eye pencils, powder or cream cake liners with a
brush, or eyeshadows can all be used as eyeliner. But never use a lip pencil
as an eyeliner, the ingredients in those are not meant for use around the eyes.
4.. Is expensive eye liner better or less harmful than cheap eyeliner?
Price doesn't really matter, it all depends on what works for you personally.
Drug store eyeliners don't harm any more than department store liners.
Products advertised specifically for use around the eyes (liner, shadow,
mascara) are all subject to the same controls on what ingredients they can or
cannot contain. Whatever price range you choose, beginners usually find
eyeliner pencils to be the easiest to use. Later you might want to try cake
liner with a liner brush or eyeshadow with a liner brush.
5.. Why isn't it ok to mix perfumes? Are there any kind of perfumes that
you can mix?
Because they can have conflicting fragrance notes. You can experiment with
mixing if you like, but successful mixing only comes with experience. It's best
not to try mixing as you're running out the door since fragrances change as
they are worn and top notes (the part you smell at first) may not blend well
with base notes (the part you smell after wearing for a while) and you won't
know that until later in the day.
6.. There are perfumes that don't stain on your clothes? What kind are
they?
Staining depends on so many factors it's hard to say. Staining increases in
direct sunlight, in hot weather, the length of time the fragrance remains on
the fabric and depending on the formula strength of the fragrance used. For
example parfum is stronger and more concentrated than cologne or body spray so
parfum has a tendency to stain more.
7.. There are clothes that perfume doesn't stain on. What kind are they?
Again, it depends on too many factors such as those mentioned in question 6,
and also what kind of fabric, whether the fabric is a blend, what kind of
weave, etc. If you have had problems with fragrances staining clothing then
it's probably best to err on the side of caution and NOT apply fragrance
directly to clothing.
8.. Is there a kind of lipstick that dyes your lips?
Yes, lip ink formulas. They are very longlasting but can also be very drying.
9.. Are there kinds of perfumes that last a long time and those that last
a short time?
More concentrated formulas such as parfums or perfumes last longest, less
concentrated formulas such as cologne or body sprays last less time. Lasting
time also depends on the particular notes in the fragrance, the weather, body
chemistry of the wearer, skin type, etc.
10.. Because my face is oily and I sweat from my face a lot, my makeup
goes away quickly. Eye makeup goes away or smears. What should I do?
Try powder formulas rather than cream formulas. If that still doesn't last then
try a small amount of an eyeshadow base under the powder to give the powder
something to 'grip'. To avoid smears don't touch or rub your eyes while
wearing eye makeup. That may sound obvious, but many people touch or rub their
eyes out of habit without seeming to realize they do it frequently.
11.. How long does makeup last before it becomes expired?
Many formulas today have expiration dates on the products. In general though,
powders last the longest and the more "liquid" a formula is the less time it
will last and still be usable. A good rule of thumb is toss anything that
changes color, texture, separates, or develops a different smell than when the
product was new.
12.. I'm 31. What kind of moisturizer and cleanser should I use? Are they
bad for you in any way?
Age doesn't matter, your skin type matters in what kind of products you should
use. You mentioned that you have oily skin. What might work well for you is a
gentle basic gel cleanser (like Johnson & Johnson's Purpose), an alcoholfree
toner (like one of the Neutrogena alcoholfree formulas), and a light
moisturizer that contains sunscreen (like Oil of Olay Complete UV
FragranceFree).
With oily skin you probably don't need much as far as moisturizing, but using a
sunscreen everyday is important. Moisturizers don't prevent lines and
wrinkles, protection from the sun is what prevents lines and wrinkles. The best
way to protect your skin is to use a broadspectrum sunscreen that is at least
SPF 15 and use it everyday, not just in the summer. Also don't try to get a
tan, not from the sun and not from indoor tanning beds either. Tanning is
damaging and over time will cause permanent lines, wrinkles, sagging, dark
spots on the skin, and may cause or contribute to skin cancer. Some indoor
tanning salons advertise that they are "safer than the sun" but this is NOT
true. Tanning from any kind of ultraviolet light damages skin over time and
the damage is cumulative, yesterday's damage is added to today's and so on.
Hope this helps,
Kerri
