Acrylic Nail Question

elnas...@gmail.com
Hi!
I am new to the whole "fake" nail culture and have a question. I
recently got my nails done and absolutely love them. I have been a
serious nail biter and my real nails are super weak. Anyways, my
question is in regards to my real nail underneath. As the weeks and
months go by and having to fill the nails I understand that my real
nail will grow underneath.
Now what happends when the fake tip is filed down and all that is left
is my real nail and acrylic? This seems weird to me...do people take
off their fake nails, clip their real nails down and put on a new set?
Or do they just keep getting their nails filled?
Just wondering is all.
Thanks
Elna

You have to have a fill every couple of weeks or so,they will fill it
in where its grown out and trim the lengh as they get longer, you wont
be able to see the real nail.

They just keep filing away. I loved acrylics when I had them. The problem
always came in when I took them off. My real nails were in such bad shape from
all of the filing, it would take months to get back to normal.

Get a fill every 2 weeks. What happens is your real nails grow under
the acrylics. They won't be much good though as they are thin and will
be messed up if and when the acrylics come off. It takes about 6
months for the nails to become normal.
I have taken them off and then tried to go natural but fact of the
matter is my nails are too brittle and always crack or break. My mom
has had acrylics for 10 years with no harm. If there is fungus or mold
growing (a greenish gray yellow) you have gotten moisture under the
nail and it needs to come off. There is stuff you can buy and put on
it to fix it. But thats why its so important to get fills to keep the
nails on well so moisture does not collect.

Short of getting the el–cheapo press on nails at Walgreens, is there a fake
nail you can wear for a day or two, or for a special occasion when you
really want to go ultra glam, but want to go back to your everyday nails (I
keep mine pretty short) the next day?

I've never tried any press–on nail but I totally concur with what Bumblebee
says. I've had acrylic nails in the past a couple of times (namely right
after both children were born) and it does take 6 full months to grow out
all of the damaged nail. The nail is even more damaged if you have them
removed by soaking them and then prying them off as the nail technician did
with mine. The real kicker is that I had the nails for a shorter period of
time than it took to grow out the damage from them. At this point, I
believe that if I had a special occasion and I wasn't up to doing my own
nails, that are now kept short out of necessity, I would book an appt. for a
manicure to whip my own nails into shape. But then short nails don't bother
me and I believe they can look just as nice as acrylics; even nicer because
they're natural.

they should NOT be filling on your natural nail.............EVER!
"bumblebee4451" <bumblebee4...@yahoo.com>
I am not sure what the last post means.
Every place I go only puts the acrylics nail forms on the tips or ends
of the nail and then they mound on the stuff on the rest making a
smooth transition. Your nails will grow so what else is there to do?
My experience is that you don't want them to take the nail off unless
there is something wrong with it (loose, mold, etc.) because it to me
is somewhat uncomfortable and soaking the nails is really drying and
messes up the skin. I would say the worst part of it is having the
nails taken off. If that happens, its better to do it one nail at a
time. I wish there was some way of gradually filing things down and
naturally letting things grow out instead of removing the nails. Any
ideas?

I agree with you, but all the nail technicians seem to. The damage happens
when they are smoothing down the back of the fill close to the cuticle. If I
could find someone who would be extra careful to not damage my real nail, I
might consider getting acrylics again. Where do you go to get better
treatment?
TIA

i actually stopped going to the WALK IN nail salons, and shopped
around for a tech who does it right!
i moved, and got a recommendation to my newest technician.
i have had acrylic nails on and off since the 80's so i think i have
had the best and the worst!
good luck with your search! (if you decide to do it again)
i hate being without acrylics.................

if you must take your acrylics off, i recommend soaking your fingers
in warmed (in the micro) acetone, while watching a good movie!

I have acrylic nails and recently i had a finger nail torn off and at
the emergency room the doctors gave me a lecture about the dangers of
acrylic nails as well as the fungus infections you can get with them.
I am having mine removed. It will take six months or longer for my index
finger nail to grow back.

That was smart. I've thought about doing that, but never took any action.

I think arcrylics = damaged (temporarily) nails. I don't think there
is a way to have them without compromising the natural nails because
they will be paper thin when coming off and will have to be sanded and
buffed to be smoothed. They will be cut down to the quick. That said,
I agree, I hate to be without acrylics because my hands do not look
good without them.
I have very large hands and one ring finger is a size 10. Meaning I
don't have very feminine looking hands.I also have a lot of jewelry and
rings. Without nails, my hands do not look good and I don't feel
feminine. Therefore, I will keep acrylics as I feel so much prettier
with them. Yes they are expensive and kind of a pain but my real nails
are not good.
" rosie readandpost" <readandp...@yahoo.com>
OUCH!
in over 20yrs, i have never had a fungus infection.

You can let it go to the point where the tips are completely gone and you
just have acrylic on top of nail, but I think that works best when your
acrylics are medium–short. The other option is to have it all taken off when
the tips are almost gone and re–do the whole thing. That seems to work
better if you are trying to keep longer nails. I have not had acrylics in a
while b.c. I really hate how long it takes to get your nails back to normal,
once you take them off. Keeping them is definately a committment, both
timewise and financially. It just depends on how much you like them I guess.
Good luck and enjoy!
"Miss Livvy" <Xeveryidiwantistak...@yahoo.com>
One thing I just thought to add to the "positive" column for acrylics is
that nail polish stays on a lot longer and better (little or no chipping,
peeling) with acrylics.
