Cartilage ear piercing pain question

"Jill" <whattingaw...@nospam.com>
Hi all––– I used to lurk and post many many years ago if anyone remembers
me, I used to have aol and use tealhonda or dachshundi for email....
I am in the relurking stages now, since I had a baby last year (my first!),
I haven't had much time to think about fashion.
Anyway, I went to a new place to have my haircut a week ago and the salon
owner happened to have worked at a jewelry store for 20 years, and so does
ear piercings as well. So I had my cartilage pirced right near the top of my
left ear, with the intention of taking the stud out as soon as I can and
putting a white gold hoop there, one of the hoops that fully encircles.
When I had it pierced, it burned but didn't hurt right away. Then was a
little sore for a day or two and then felt fine, but now, a week later it
REALLY hurts. I have been taking care of it daily with alcohol and rotating
the stud like I am supposed to etc.
The salon owner told me some people notice little discomfort and others
claim that a year or more later theirs still hurts. To those hear who have
this piercing, as I am sure a ton of you do, have you ever had any problems
with a cartilage piercing? One of my friends had 4 piercings in her upper
ears and tols me that for a few years she didn't have any problems but now
she can't sleep with any earrings in and they generally hurt. Ouch! Mine is
ok– it's not healed yet. But it is more sore now than a week ago when I had
it done and is pretty uncomfortable. I thought about switching the stud out
for a hoop soon but the lady also warned me that when it is new I may get
the stud out and have problems getting a new earring in, so I am going to
wait the recommended few months, especially since it is hurting now.
Opinions, advice?
Also what is the best kind of hoop earring to put in an upper ear cartilage
piercing? I haven't found what I am looking for yet– I want it to be simple,
just a simple white gold or silver hoop (preferably white gold), that is not
too big or gaudy, and doesn't have a "back"– something that will just loop
through and enclose. Any suggestions? Also–– is white gold better than
silver? I don't plan to take the hoop out once I get it in and thought white
gold wouldn't tarnish and would be durable etc....but all I can find are
silver, which I have no problem with except I haven't found what I am
looking for yet....
TIA for any tips. Good to see the familiar faces again!
Jill

DW had hers done in a piercing shop, and they put in a ring (faster
healing, less chance of infection). But it still took a couple of months
to heal and it was still a little tender for 6 or 8 months. Cartilage
doesn't have much blood flow, so you've got to expect healing to be slow.

My mom and I had it done at the same time at a Claire's about.... 5 years
ago. mine healed up real quick. not a lot of pain, mostly though, had to
sleep on my right side and keep the hair and product out of my ear for about
a month, but my mom was another story. Took her about 3 years to get the
dang thing to heal completely, and now it still gets a little sore and she
can only wear gold or silver in it; I can get away with junk jewelry but
prefer my gold and silver hoops.
The kind of earring i find to be the most comfortable and wearable is a hoop
with a lever back (i think that's the kind of back, its got the long bar at
snaps into a pinched clasp). The bar has got to be longish, or else it
bothers me. I've got a silver one like that i wear all the time, and a gold
one with white gold balls on it in that i wear when i wear gold earrings (or
can't find the silver one).
keep the piercing clean. use that earring fluid you can get a Claires or
Icing. It doesn't sting as much as alcohol, but gets the job done.

It's not really a good idea to use alcohol on new piercings. There are
other antibiotic lotions that are less irritating and drying which will
help to speed up healing. If your piercing was done through cartilidge
with a gun the flesh around the healing is also likely bruised as well.
When I had my ears done with a gun they never healed properly and I had
to let them close over. Years later I had them done with a hollow–needle
and they healed quickly with no troubles at all. Hopefully you don't
have the same problem with your new piercings.
I would switch to a hoop even though they say to leave the stud in until
it's healed. I found the hoops very comfortable while my ears were
healing the second time I had them done.
