A Moment of Shopping/Spending Enlightenment

onmycue <onmy...@tds.net>
Hi Everyone,
Someone mentioned that she'd have more money if she bought less stuff.
After laughing along with everyone else and some consideration of this
philosophy, I think this is going to apply to my spending habits this
year. So I made one final farewell purchase (teal Perlina hobo bag at
Marshall's) and I'm done.
(I do have to purchase two formals for fraternal use, but I didn't get
to choose them. They're not as bad as the hideous hummingbird item
from a few years ago, but one is pepto pink and the other is silver,
both require enormous crinolines. Just shoot me now...)
Many small boutiques have been opened with less stock than that which
resides in my closet. My makeup case, a large tackle box, no longer
closes. And I am *not* even going to consider the fragrance
collection. So, I'm done for the year.
Here are the rules I've set for myself:
1. No new makeup, clothes, fragrance, purses, shoes, or any other
wearable items
2. Replace soap, hair products, essential grooming/cleanliness items
as needed
3. Replace tights, hose, undergarments as needed
4. Replace foundation, mascara as needed
Anyone care to join me? Maybe a daily thread on "What I didn't buy
today"?

I know I need to do what you are doing. Honestly, though, I'm scared. I
started by eliminating everything from my automatic ebay notification list;
at least they won't be letting me know when "my" items are listed. I don't
think I could go cold turkey, but I would love to read about your progress.
I *have* stopped compulsively buying cosmetics though. I have several
lifetimes's worth of eye shadows. And I have a stockpile of my mascara...
Go for it! (But do you think you can keep reading a.f.? Won't it be like
being on a diet and going to a candy store?)

I think I can keep reading, and even window shopping. It's always been
more about the hunt than the kill for me anyway.
If you remember my DH's shoe ultimatum, this should be similar (minus
the transfer of buying from shoes to fragrance, of course).
Maybe I can keep a running total of what I would have spent, then at
the end of the year, we can do something fun with it.

I fully understand where you are coming from. I've actually been
really good. I went to Toronto and only bought a hairstick at H&M and
stuff at Lush which I now regret. I don't need anything. I don't even
need soap or shampoo for probably 2 years. I have stockpiles of
mascara. I have a 10 drawer cart full of just makeup. The only thing I
might run out of in the next year is sunscreen, moisturizer and
conditioner.
I'm going to join you partially. I'm returning my Lush stuff(for other
reasons) and I'm not buying anything cosmetic, clothing, handbag, or
shoe wise until I've lost 20 lbs. Then I'll reward myself with new
clothes. Of course, I still have skinny clothes I haven't let go of.
By the time I fit into them, I'll probably be tired of them.
Of course, I'm moving into a new place in February so my consumer
purchases will be mainly house things. But I think continuing to read
alt.fashion will push me to lose weight faster, so I can buy stuff
again. *sigh* I'm just lucky I'm no where close to a Target.

"bethG" <NOrabbitS...@carrotpatch.net>
Sadly, I should probably join you. I realized over the holidays that I can
go 2 weeks w/o doing laundry and still not have worn everything I've
purchased recently. The only reason I "need" to get the laundry done (other
than the giant pile taking up space) is I'm out of slacks for work and I"m
down to my scruffy unmentionables instead of the nice new ones. BTW, DH was
home on vacation and wearing jeans and other schlubby stuff so that's how I
got away w/o doing wash – he doesn't have as many clothes for work!
I also realized that I haven't even worn some of my most recent clothing
purchases, although I think that's more a result of being a creature of
habit and grabbing my favorites.
I have more than enough cosmetics and bath gels so I'm trying to use things
up and going for replacements rather than additions.
Things I am still open to purchasing – fragrances, since I'm still primarily
using samples I've stockpiled and shoes since I finally found a brand that
my podiatrist approves of AND are cute (Danskos). I need to replace all my
cheap shoes bit by bit...

I'll sign up, at least till June. I have so much stuff that I need to
get my shopping under control. My main goal is to wear all my clothes

This is pretty much what I'm trying to do too. I may have to
backslide a bit for spring/summer –– we'll see what fits; I've lost
weight since last summer –– but in general I really do need to stop
adding stuff. I have more clothing than I can keep track of. And
I've acquired too many "gifts with purchase" and such that I need to
use up.

Ok, so I'm pretty much with you on the makeup and scent for the most
part. And I've found my haircare HG stuff in Dove.
For the other, I need more clothes, and maybe another bag or two. and
shoes, lots of shoes.
I also need more money for the above. :–)

Makeup, it takes believing in. Like a magic carpet, it's belief that
makes it fly. Otherwise, it's just a rug.
If you believe in it, makeup has a magic all it's own.

I am on Moratorium as well with makeup and fragrance, shower products, hair
products, etc. unless they are essentials I have used up. I will also not buy
any new purses. The only things I may buy are some stuff for my trip to NC. I
need to buy some plain "wife beater" type tank tops (the women's Hanes type
that come in solid colors! These are a HG of mine!!) and maybe some jeans from
Lane Bryant, and a pair or 2 of flip flops. I am saving all of my money for
plane tickets and hotel rooms when I go to NC. I am also on moratorium to not
go out to lunch so much! I have lost 12 pounds from not going out to lunch so
often! I can't believe I am actually losing weight near the holiday season so
that makes me happy. Oh yeah, and no more nailpolishes, salon services (i just
had my eyebrows done, highlights, and a small trim). I am going to do facials,
pedi's/mani's at home. My Caboodle (the one and only green one!) is starting
to get full, so it's time to use up stuff!!

I am with you. I even enhanced my prospects for sainthood by spending
New Years Day returning all the clothes I didn't wear over the
Christmas break.
Thank goodness for a productive trip to the Aurora, IL outlet shops

I like it, I'm in with a couple of modifications. I don't wear mascara
and am set on #3 because I have an abundance of those items. I'm in on
#2. My modifications are; a) I am allowed to replace wearable items
that are old and ratty or don't fit, or to hoard beauty faves that are
getting discontinued and really TRULY aren't coming back in any form,
b) I treat myself to one Lesportsac handbag, one new shower gel, and
one new fragrance this spring and fall, c) ANYTHING, meaning anything
bought under a or b needs to be off ebay or on sale.
What I *didn't* buy at the BBW sale yesterday – the new Cherry Blossom
shower gel because I know I can grab it later in the spring.

I'm with you on all four rules. I have culled through my closet after not
wearing a bunch of stuff due to pregnancy and am mailing it to my mom who
recently lost a bunch of weight. I really don't need to replace anything,
since I had so much stuff. The only time I will be purchasing new items is
when:
1) I get a gift card for a store
2) I reach another weight loss milestone.

Okay I will buy new stockings and tights. And just maybe a new
Lesportsac handbag. I love these things. My mom was asking me about
them, because I bought her a purse and a big tote before and she said
those were "made in the USA", but when she went to buy some as gifts
recently, they were made in China. I'm not sure if there's a quality
difference or not in the bags. Have you noticed anything?

I didn't see the original post. But coincidentally, I have almost the same
shopping resolution this year. However, I'm not frigid as to not have any
new clothes, fragrances or purses. So for myself, it will be this:
(1) No new cosmetics unless it's replacement (this is getting so difficult
especially since the Spring collection is coming in at this moment while I
type)
(2) No new skirts.
(3) Only 8 handbags for this year. And I shouldn't be leaning towards
designer handbags anymore. I've already bought one on the first couple of
days of the new year, so that means I'm left with 7. Not buying handbags
totally for me is very very difficult, as I'm a handbag addict.
I'm also trying to curb buying things online. Especially for things which
I've never seen irl. They almost always turn out to be not as nice as
depicted on the websites.

OMG, yes. Well I go to "Winners" which is owned by the TJX Companies
that own TJ Maxx/Marshalls. They always have a large selection of Le
Sportsacs. I even broke down and bought a Le Sportsac velcro wallet...
you know they were big in the 80s amongst teenage girls.
I actually have less Le Sportsac now, because I keep "losing" them to
my mother. I'm just a sucker for the small tiny Le Sportsac purses. I
want to buy one of those bigger luggage bags, but I don't know if it
would survive the luggage handlers.
I was trying to be so good and not buy anything! I returned the Hot
Sex gift pack to Lush and bought a Buffy the Backside Slayer Body
Butter. That was going to be it! Now I might have to go scout out
Winners tomorrow...

You can sit by me. Did I email Stevie for info. on the handbag
connection/friend she has that she posted about a week or so ago? Of
course I did, and I contacted them.
We can sit together when the introductions are made by us pursaholics.
We will confer as to which outfits and handbags we shall wear and take

Sportsac enabling (ears perk up, perfectly vertically)????!!!!
My Marshall's must really suck. I haven't even seen the solid colors of
LeSportsac bags there the last few visits. Either that, or I'm not
going often enough. Or I need to go to TJX. But Ebay's always a good
option. The one I have my eye on for spring is the Bags print with LS
bags in black, white and bright colors on a white background w/ black
web trim and white LS logos on the trim. I think I'm getting the deluxe
everyday this time and consolidating my purse stuff and totebag stuff
into it so I only lug one bag to work. It could also double as a small
diaper bag/purse combo on weekends. The print's now up on
www.lesportsac.com if any of you who live in black, white and bright
colors are interested...
Another place that always, always seems to have them; Filene's
Basement. I get there infrequently but they still have plenty of LS's
to choose from.
Always happy to enable but *especially* to LS enable :–)
