OT– need some books rec

"LaLaGirl" <movieholic2...@yahoo.com>
Hi
I am going to Chiina later this week– I have one 14 hour trip one way
and one 22 hour trip (stops and stuff) on the return flight––
I need 3–4 books to keep me from going stir crazy.
Light reading (borderline with chick lit) and in paperback....
If you have read recently anything that fits the bill please share the
tittles with me....
Many thanks!

book....or any Donna Leon mystery...

I just read a very cute chick–lit book called "Full Bloom" by Caroline
Hwang––it was a quite well–written "girl works in magazine industry,
has unsatisfying love life" book with the twist that the heroine's
mother was a very traditional Korean woman whose one goal in life was
to have her daughter marry a Korean husband. It's out in paperback now.

I feel your (airplane) pain! Here are some of the favorites I took with me
on my flight to Singapore:
*The Dim Sum of All Things by Kim Wong Keltner
*The Opposite of Fate by Amy Tan
*Sushi for Beginners by Marian Keyes
I also collected my magazines for the month and packed them along in my
carryon. Though I normally wouldn't do this (magazines are heavy!!), it
really saved my sanity and it was fun to have a change of pace from the
written word and ogle the glossies for a while too.
Have a safe and wonderful trip!
Leilani

Have you read any of Marian Keyes' other books? They all sound good and
having finished Sushi for Beginners a few days ago am hoping to read more of
her books.

I love Marian Keyes books, in particular "Lucy Sullivan is Getting Married",
"Watermelon" and "Rachaels Holiday." My least favorite to date has been
"Angels."
Also look for Jane Green's "Jemima J" and "Mr. Maybe", both excellent reads.

Jemima J. by Jane Green was an enjoyable & light beachy read for me a few
summers ago.
Have a good trip!

I've actually read a few others, but they are not nearly as good as Sushi
for Beginners. I actually ended up picking this one up because I liked the
cover! :)

I sort of despise most chick lit so I don't know if this will be
helpful, but I highly recommend Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series.
They have number titles – _One for the Money_, _Two For the Dough_, etc.
Fast, light, fun and slightly sexy reads!

As far as Marian Keyes goes...Rachel's Holiday is pretty entertaining
and it's a good book for a trip cause it's a big fat book.
Took 4 books to Hawaii a few weeks ago:
**Eating Crow by Jay Rayner. Cool premise – professional apologizing.
Plus it's funny and has lots of foodie references.
**New Douglas Coupland (Eleanor Rigby)...not his best but still a fun
quirky story.
**Niether Here nor There – Bill Bryson. Love his travel writing...so
funny. Any of his books are great.
**Fatland by Greg Critser. If you liked or want to see SuperSize Me,
it's up your alley. Lots of cool info about how America got so
fat...and it's interesting to know that it all started with the need
for cheap food in the 70's that led to people eating cheap corn syrup
that the body doesn't digest properly, turning straight into fat. Well
written without preaching.
Melanie (who knows her library card number off by heart)

And what red blooded woman wouldn't swoon over the idea of Joe or Ranger?

finished it. Maybe I should read it again...

Good to know the recommendations–I saw those at the bookstore. I liked
Sushi for Beginners in an "easy to read" sort of way. Will read more of
hers, then.

I liked the title ;) However, I thought it was funny how long it took for
the title to surface in the book.

It is an easy book–nothing deep or compelling. It was easy to put down, and
just as easy to pick up a read for a spell. Give it another try, especially
if you own it.

I'm amazed at how many of the recs I've read before. In terms of chick lit,
I think Robyn Sisman is great. I liked her Perfect Strangers and loved Girl
in Paris.
For erotic historical fiction, I like Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel series.
Laurell k. Hamilton is also fantastic..try Kiss of the Shadows.
And em in case you haven't read it, The Da Vinci Code is a good read.
