Today's word: Tog

mpam...@aol.comnospam (Mpamber)
I subscribe to a word a day e–mail list and today's word is tog. I remember
getting a catalog years back called The Tog Shop. I am not familiar with word
as a verb. Anyone else?

A.Word.A.Day––tog

tog (tog) noun
1. A coat.
2. Togs: Clothes.
verb tr.
To dress up for a particular occasion or activity.
[From shortening of earlier cant togeman, from Latin toga (toga), ultimately
from Indo–European root (s)teg– (to cover) that's also the ancestor of other
words such as thatch, deck, tile, and detect.]
Tog is also the unit of thermal insulation of clothing. Another such unit is
clo (shortening of clothes).

I've not heard the word 'tog' as a verb either, only as a word meaning
'clothes'. The Tog Shop is still around and I still get catalogs from them.

There's a clothing brand called Tog24 too.
Togs were always swimwear when I was a kid.

Tog is a delightful word. Makes me think of tennis and boating and everything
being crisp and sporty.
Very 1950s!

Well, so is the Edsel, but I don't think I want an Oldsmobile that's
been sucking a lemon. <grin/duck>
