Manicure and pedicure safety

"Claire in SF" <clairi...@aol.com>
I guess this has sort of become my pet consumer concern. No sooner had I
mentioned it yesterday than our local news channel had a special report on a
recent outbreak of boils resulting from pedicures in contaminated footbaths.

The video they showed was pretty gory but you can see the article without
having to see any gross pictures.
In CA salons are pretty regulated however enforcement is basically
responsive in nature (responsive to complaints and to outbreaks) and I'm
sure we all know of salons who cut corners. The CA whirlpool bath cleaning
standards were put into effect a couple years ago after a similar outbreak
of boils. The whirlpool footbath requirements are here on this page:

whether or not a salon complies.
Informed inquiring consumers are the best defense we have.
