Hi there
well the SO has decided that he didn't want to buy me anything on my wish
list (mostly because I bought versions of stuff from ebay!)
so we are looking for a double strand pearl necklace.. one strand about 16
inches, the other about 18.
I would like reasonable size pearls of good quality..
any places I should check out? what to look for? what to be aware of and
alert to in terms of flaws and language that I need to know?

Why don't you check with one of the reputable jewelers at the Jewelry
Mart in downtown LA? I have a good name if you need one.

I have two strands of Majorica pearls...they are gorgeous! I wear either one
almost every day. Each one is about 16 inches long. One strand is an iridescent
pinky gray, I'm not sure of mm size but they are not tiny. The other strand
contains even larger pearls, each one is a different color alternating white,
pink, light gray, dark gray. I also have the matching bracelet. They come from
Nordies and Neimans and were not cheap but thousands and thousands less than
the real thing. IIRC authentic Majorican pearls are made from real pearls
moulded somehow into a pearl shape.
I have a strand of real pinkish white ones, they are smaller in size and don't
compare with my treasured Majoricas. I seldom wear them.
