From Ladie's Home Journal on Netscape Navigator this weekend:

It's been another year of fab and drab fashion. Here, the trends we
loved, along with the ones we loathed.
Loved:
Ladylike elegance: This year a classic look was back yet looked
more modern than ever. Pencil skirts, tweed coats, wrap sweaters, and
vintageinspired brooches all combined to create a 1940sinspired Girl
Friday look. Not only is this look elegant and flirty, but its modest lines
worked for those of us with lessthanperfect figures.
Flats and roundtoed pumps: Long live comfort! Shoes finally got
stylishly walkable this year, thus eliminating the need for a
commutetooffice switcheroo. Flats in all colors and textures worked
with everything from wornin jeans to ladylike circle skirts. Even if you
wanted a little height, pumps featured feetsaving rounded toes.
Blazers: Whether in velvet, tweed, or corduroy, blazers made a huge
comeback this year and for good reason. Practically anyone can wear them,
they show off a waist (or create one if you're straight up and down), add
polish to casual pants, and are the perfect thing to layer on as the weather
turns chilly. The best cuts were shorter and fitted, and clusters of
brooches gave them a vintage look.
Color: From kelly greens to cool teals to rich plums, vibrant color
was everywhere this year. Just one freshhued piece from a jacket to a
belt to a pair of shoes could brighten up an entire outfit, making this
an easy, inexpensive way to liven up old favorites.
Galoshes: Remember when rain used to be fun, because it meant you got
to splash in puddles? Well, those days are back, thanks for this year's
cheerful array of wellies. Worn with skirts or tucked into jeans, these
playful boots were everywhere and often priced to move.
Loathed:
Ugg boots: The love/hate relationship with Uggs became more of a
hate/hate thing this year. Although they're great for keeping feet toasty in
the winter, we finally realized that they make feet appear ridiculously
large and they look downright silly with miniskirts and shorts. Here's
hoping you didn't spend too much on them.
Overdone bottle tans: Mystic Tan's sprayon business is booming and
you saw the results all over perpetually orange celebs like Charlize Theron
and Paris Hilton. A healthy glow? Wonderful. An overdone fake bake in the
middle of winter? Alienlike.
Ruffled miniskirts: This look was just too girlish for most of us to
pull off. And let's face it who needs extra material in the hip vicinity?
Jelly bags: These rubber bags a takeoff on the famous Hermes Birkin
Bag were all the rage earlier this year. But why? They were too flimsy to
hold their shape, and transparent enough to show all the unmentionables we
drag around in our purses.
