OT: Holiday music

"ahmward" <nospam.ahmw...@yahoo.com>
The season begins for us with Manheim Steamroller and those old tapes
with Run DMC etc. but this year my son got me "Tis the season for" by
Los Straitjackets. If there is any surfer in you, this is a great cd.
My youngest likes Christmas with the Rat Pack but I truly dislike
Frank's version of Jingle Bells so I let her take it to school. Do you
have any holiday favorites?

The three Trans–Siberian Orchestra releases. I *love* these. If
anybody had told me "that's the guys from Metallica playing on those!"
before I heard them I probably wouldn't have even listened to them
(yes, I know that's prejudiced) but their renditions of standards are
just incredible. My favorite is their "Carol of the Bells".
Charlie Brown Christmas music by Vince Guaraldi.
"Black Christmas" by Tomoko Konno – that is such a cute song (if you
like Jpop).

Christmas music is a big deal at our house. I asked my hubby the other day
how may Christmas CDs we are up to now and he said he stopped counting after
100. I like traditional carols and he likes the newer or more unusual
Christmas music. I have over 400 Christmas songs loaded onto my mp3 player
and those are the ones I picked out because I like them. :–)

Wow, you have me beat, I bow to you!! And I thought I had a lot at 40!
Right now I have Celine Dion's (forgot I had this one until I rotated the CD
carousel) and I love it.

"Martha Hardcastle Guthrie" <mot...@woh.rr.com>
"Fairytale of New York" by the lovely late Kirsty MacColl and the Pogues. I
listen to it regularly all year long. What's not to like about a song with a
beautiful orchestration intro that leads into the opening lyrics, "It was
Christmas Eve, babe – in the drunk tank."
The chorus – and you really have to hear this song to understand how
gorgeous and tragic that it is – "The boys from the NYPD Choir were singing
Galway Bay, And the bells were ringing out for Christmas Day."
If you secretly love Christmas under your cynical, jaded heart – or want to
love Christmas under those conditions, this song might be for you. Listen
for it on alt or adult alternative programs. The video is incredible, too.

The ones I am especially fond of are Christmas Cajun Style with Justin
Wilson, Hawaiian Slack Key Christmas, and Yule be Swingin. I also like a
Nutcracker with guitars that I think is Windham Hill. It's been years since
I could stomach Manheim Steamroller and I'm pretty much over the Run DMC
one, too. I am on the lookout for more things. I'd like something baroque
but less somber than the one I already have.

Several Celtic Christmas CDs, enjoy those.
Also Kenny G, Vince Guaraldi's A Charlie Brown Christmas CD, and a Rosemary
Clooney CD.
Just bought Clay Aiken's, good but not great.

So far, I'm resisting to avoid holiday music overdose.
I did listen to the Mariah Carey's Greatest Hits 2 CD set today: it
includes one song from her Christmas album ("All I Want For Christmas
Is You").

I just purchased a few CD's that take the classics and spruce them up
a bit. The only one I've listened to so far is "Holiday Remixed". It
has a jazzy almost light techno beat. I love it! Very cocktail
party. The others are supposed to be along the same lines – "The
Reindeer Room: A Christmas Chillout" and "Home for the Holidays".
They're all available on Amazon if anyone is interested. I had
ordered a 4th but I ordered it used and it wasn't available by the
time they processed my order.
Linda in tampa/st. pete – who thinks she'll pop in one of the
unlistened ones right now!

Nice thread Audrey :–). I found my tape of George Winston's "December"
over the weekend so am glad the CD wasn't at my used CD store and I
didn't spring for a new one. I also found my "Nutcracker Suite" tape
and Vince Gueraldi's "Charlie Brown Christmas." We're also listening
to music from the Rankin Bass shows, "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town",
"Frosty the Snowman", Rudolph, etc. with Burl Ives "Silver and Gold",
Jimmy Durante's "Frosty the Snowman" and more. I have no idea where
DH got it but am guessing it's at amazon.com or any large music store.
If you grew up w/ these shows like we did, you'll want this.
Now I just have to find the Jimmy Buffet Xmas CD.

This song follows me wherever I shop.
It's a conspiracy for I am not a Mariah Carey fan.
Now I will play the Vince Guaraldi Charlie Brown Christmas CD over and over
though.

Lololol, Carol, I've been hearing it all the time too and now it's
playing in a continuous loop in my head. I can relate since I'm not an
MC fan either. I'll also try to blast it out of my brain with VG which
is one of the CDs on my changer atm.

I love VG and I best go buy another CD because at any moment ours will just
stop playing due to being worn out.
But I do plan on buying a Garth Brooks Christmas CD because I love that song
The Gift. Hey, what's one more holiday CD??
Carol
"Vicki in DC" <Nickycharles2...@yahoo.com>
We have 2; DH had VG before we met and I still have mine so if one
dies, we have a back up :–). Haven't heard "The Gift" yet but you're
right, what's one more holiday CD? A woman I work with has 200 (!!!)
and yep, all holiday music.
I need to put my Swingin' Christmas on the changer and get some
listening in with that one now that the big day's drawing near. I still
haven't listened to it this year.

I love those!! Finally got those on cd last year (Best Buy actually)
and listened to them about a billion times between Thanksgiving and
Christmas. OK maybe I exaggerate, it was probably just half a billion
times. :)

That Los Straitjackets Christmas album is one of my all time favorite
Christmas albums. :) As a matter of fact, I play that one year round!
I picked up the new Chris Isaak Christmas album in October and have
been gleefully playing it since then. So nice when Christmas arrives
early.
If you want to drive your friends, neighbors and loved ones screaming
in terror from your holiday gathering, get "A John Waters Christmas"
that just came out in November. It's not for everyone, and certainly
has cringeworthy moments, but it's wonderfully awful. :)

My old "A Very Special Christmas" tape always gets me in the holiday
spirit. I also have an Ella Fitzgerald Christmas CD that I really
like. And of course Boney M will forever mean "Mom" and "Christmas"
to me.

I play Nat "King" Cole's "The Christmas Song" year round. It
gets repeated play and I'm on my 2nd CD already.
We have all the Mannheim Steamroller's AND the Mannheim
Steamroller "Tribute" album, Lorie Line's, Boyz 2 Men,
Charlie Brown, Andy Williams, Bing Crosby, Sandi Patty,
Mormon's Tabernacle, and oodles more I just can't remember.
I'm a Christmas music fiend. I have nearly as many
Christmas albums as I do all other CD's put together.
My next purchase will be a Josh Groban if I can find one.
I sooooo wanted to enjoy Charlotte Church's and Harry
Connick Jr's music, but both of them are unlistenable.
Charlotte's voice is/was changing when she recorded hers
and Harry should just not sing AT ALL. His O, Holy Night
is appalling.
