November hits and misses

"ahmward" <nospam.ahmw...@yahoo.com>
Miss...Sephora great pumpkin mask Whatever that pumpkin enzyme is, it
made my face sting , and I couldn't wait to get it off. I am the one
with normal happy skin, and I rarely have a reaction to a product. It
was a sample.
Hit...Philosophy cinnamon buns body wash, great scent
?..Armani eye shadows. They come in closed black boxes with numbers so
who can remember the contents ? The product is excellent but will I know
that #44 is a beautiful olive green and what if I had a lot of them
?..Talika lipocils...I have used the wand for less than two weeks so the
jury is out
Hit...L'Occitane hand cream sample from Sephora...very generous sample
and it reminded me to get out my unopened similar Pre de Provence cream
Hit...body lotions in pump bottles such as Kiehl's cream de corps and
face cleansers in see through tubes such as Lancome mousse confort and
Clairins two in one. I hate packaging where you have no idea how much
is left.
Lots more new products to try

Hits: Seconding Audrey on the Philosophy Cinnamon Buns Body Wash. Only my
daughters (2 and 6) insisted on using it as a bubble bath, so it only lasted
through 5 baths. I am going back to try the Grasshopper and I got them a
bottle of Dora the Explorer bubble bath at the supermarket.
American Beauty blush (spiced cider), lip palette (forget the name but they
only have one as far as I know), and eye shadow (one of the honeys, forget the
name too). I really love the quality of this for the money, they have a decent
range of shades, it's the first place where I found warm makeup that looks good
on me (maybe it's more truly neutral), and the packaging is nice but different
(I am getting so sick of matte black cases on everything).
Rimmel Vinyl Lip Lipgloss in Fantastic–– love this color, it looks good even by
itself
Rimmel Lipstick in Bordeaux–– decent quality, great color, and good smell for
low–end lipstick
Yardley Apothary Warming Body Scrub with Papaya Enzyme–– the warming is pretty
useless (it disappears after about 3 seconds) but this is the first body scrub
I found that didn't leave my tub all greasy afterwards and yet did leave my
legs moisturized.
Pure Basics Body Lotion in Wild Banana/Vanilla. Smells just like banana
pudding with a slightly odd but not unpleasant wax undertone (like a candle).
I get compliments on the fragrance all the time and it really moisturizes well.
I got mine at TJ Maxx, don't know where they sell it ordinarily but I would
buy it again.
Misses: The Rimmel mascara with the comb. It's okay but it somehow makes my
eyelashes stick together.
Awake Serum Un–Sign Oil Free and Hydroforce Eye. I actually bought these in
September but only got around to making my mind up about them now. Pretty much
a waste of money and the packaging is terrible for the price (very flimsy metal
containers and the labels were on crooked on my products). The texture of the
eye cream is fine but it does nothing to erase dark circles, which is what I
wanted it for.
The Serum Unsign does absolutely nothing to my skin; I might as well be
applying plain water.
I haven't treated myself to high end stuff in quite a long time so I'm bummed
that I wasted my birthday money on this but it was a learning experience. As
always, YMMV, but this was a complete waste for me.

Perhaps one of the loyal Awake product users will see this post and
offer you a trade for something you will like better. I guess another
option is e bay or a swap on MUA.
Your daughters have good taste but it would take 1/2 the bottle to get
Philosophy to bubble properly. That's why I didn't buy the Philosophy
bath products but now I understand that it makes a decent body wash and
I get my bubbles from other sources.

A HIT for me is Ungaro's Apparition fragrance. Putting this one in my top five
fragrances.
Also the L'Oreal thin eyeliner pencil, perhaps the name is Microliner in a
dark brown.
Lancome's waterproof eyeliner in Prune, love this warm, but not too dark,
shade.

Audrey, after I posted this I had a strange experience. I had been using the
Awake serum Unsign that I got in an Awake sampler for my birthday. It was a
clearish white and had a somewhat strange odor (a cross between gasoline and
peppermint).
Last night I opened the full size product that I bought for myself, determined
to use it up in spite of myself. When I pumped the product it was slightly
yellowish and had no odor at all. I also read the directions (which didn't
come with the sample size) which said to apply three pumps. I followed the
directions and it did make my skin tingle, which was what I was expecting based
on what the product is supposed to do.
Now I don't know if either the sampler size or the full size is spoiled (the
color of the sample size looked more normal, but the full size smells more
normal), or if they put the wrong product in one of the packaging. I also
don't know if I haven't been applying enough. I'm going to give this a try
again tonight and see how it goes.

Yes, with the 5 washes we got out of it the bubbles were extremely weak. I
think it may be because the ingredient that makes bubble baths foam
extravagantly can be irritating to the skin. I will use this only as a body
wash/fragrance treat from now on. Did the scent last on you? It didn't for me
but it was enjoyable anyway, and I would guess the bottle would last a decent
length amount of time if used only as body wash (they don't work well for me as
shampoo).

MAC Cleanse Off Oil. love it. haven 't tried any of the other cleansing oils,
but this is fab. takes off all eye makeup, rinses off with no residue, isn't
drying, and has a great scent. can't quite place it, but maybe a little
herby + spicy, yet very subtle at the same time.
Jaqua Cocoa Marshmallow body butter. smells like choc cake batter. my
mouth waters everytime i use this.
Misses: Hydra soap from the hydra store in SF. i hate these glycerin
soaps poured into loaf pans, with embedded designs. they don't lather

good for work too! I love the regular Editors that I've been loyal to for
awhile, but the new denim ones are especially awesome and like the basic
ones, they come in "short". Love the subtle shine of the material too.

Benefit Dandelion pallette. I love, love, love this. In fact, I used
Sephora's FF2004 code to purchase all of the colors separately, and
save the pallette for travel and work. Maybe I should buy another
one, or two, or ...
L'Oreal's new version of Voluminous mascara, in the metallic tube.
I'd been wearing waterproof mascara to avoid raccoon eyes, but hating
it. This stuff stays put fairly well for me, so I'm pleased.
St. Ives vanilla products. This is a *coming back to* for me, and I
wonder why I ever stopped using them. The scent is just lovely, and
the price is right.
Suave Seasonals in Butterscotch. Yummy.
MISSES
The Suave Aromatherapy line of body washes. I just don't *get* it ––
its nothing more than a rather runny body wash. The scent is OK, and
I will use it up, but its not doing anything special as far as I can
tell.
Finishing Touch razor. Eh.

I've been a very good girl this month – not much new at all. In fact, I have
barely any lemmings – no idea why. Good for my wallet, though.
I did get a new bottle of Kiehl's Pineapple Papaya scrub – an old favorite,
and I still like it just as much. Happy to see that it comes in a squeeze tube
now, rather than the old jar.
Urban Decay Cream and Sugar scrub comes in a jar however, and while I like the
scrub a lot (smells great, and foams!) the packaging just sucks. I can't
find room for it in my shower, and the first time I used it – I dropped it,
and the jar broke! It's a tiny hole, but enough for the product to ooze out if
I don't keep it upside down. Annoying!

Hits:
Suave Naturals and Seasonals, while I don't like every scent, I have
liked more than I've disliked. Citrus Smoothie shampoo is a fave, and I
like the Rich Cocoa body wash. Their kids 2in1 shampoo Orange Splash is
awesome. My kids love it, smells just like a creamsicle.
Yves Rocher strawberry sugar scrub body exfoliant. While being way too
fine for a good body scrub is great as a facial scrub for me. YMMV
Misses:
Tried the new Veet depilatory system. OMG the rash from HELL. I did the
24 hour patch test as recommended, no problem. Used the product to
remove underarm hair (I know tmi) and it worked great, 3 minutes and the
hair came right off. Rinsed off residue thoroughly with warm water and
did not use any other products (soap, antiperspirant or deodorant) for
another 24 hours per product instructions. 48 hours later, huge welts
from bra line to elbow. Five days later and the rash is less swollen,
going from welts to scabs without any scratching (unless I scratch it in
my sleep, which I wouldn't know would I?lol). Definitely a never again.
Anyone else had a similar problem?

This is my first time posting ever to this list, but I had a big
favorite this month and a big disappointment so I thought I would post.
Hits:
Talika Lipocils, love this stuff. I have been using it all month and my
lashes are longer and more filled in. I even have lower lashes now,
which where almost none existent before.
Restorative Body Scrub in Cocoa, from the Pure Simplicity line at BBW
this smells yummy and I love the way it's not to hard on my skin. The
scrub is somewhat fine in texture and leave a nice smell afterwards.
Misses:
Erno Laszlo Timeless Skin, have used all month but haven't seen anything
and maybe face looks worst them it did. The first 2 weeks it really
broke out my chin. I kept using it hoping skin would calm down, it did
but no changes other than that, and and skin is more discolored than
before use. It's a shame because this was really expensive for me and I
wanted it to work.
Restorative Body Wash in Cocoa, from same line as above. I don't know
why this smells so different than the above but it does, I don't like
the smell at all, and it very much dries out my skin.

*Origins Cocoa Therapy line––whoever described the scent as "Tootsie
Roll"–like was right on the money! The only I wished for was a lip balm to
add to this line. Spoke to the Origins store manager, though, and she said
that what's out is all there is. Apparently the body balm is limited
edition, though the rest of the line will be a permanent fixture in stores.
My favorite is the body butter, thanks to the recommendations here.
*Stila Major Lash mascara––I too was on the "We Hate Stila Mascara!"
bandwagon, and I think the powers–that–be over in EL Land heard our cries.
I received a sample of this in a gloss.com order and it's fabulous! Great
formula (the black is very black) and the brush catches every fine lash.
*CSP Vanille Canelle––This is the first holiday season that I've really had
a chance to break this out, and it's such a winner! Just a warm,
comforting, holiday scent. Puts me in a great mood.
*The Sak leather handbags––I've got both the bronze leather Skyler and the
green leather Tracey III satchel and both are major winners! I hope that
The Sak intends to add more styles to their leather line. The leather is
soft and supple, lots of great compartments, and the bag just feels *right*
when you are carrying it.
*Hello Kitty 30th Anniversary line––Lots of adorable and high–end goodies
put out especially for my favorite cat's birthday! My favorite is the
bejeweled compact mirror. It's heavy, but so decadent.
I haven't yet received my huge Sephora order, so the jury is out on the
other products I picked up this month.

Dr Hauschka Tinted Day Cream––Looks really dark in the tube but blends out

MISSES

– Merona "Walking Coat" in black – love this!! It looks awesome with

– Burt's Bees Lip Shimmers – I have Nutmeg, Watermelon and Raisin and I

– Regina Harris perfume – this is awesome. It's kind of like Geisha

– Lorac Licked Kissed Bitten lip polish collection – I love pretty much

I got it.
– Rimmel blush in Pink Rose – this is so lovely. I usually wear Nars

shade I was looking for. Really excellent quality, too, for like 2 bucks!
– Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse in Porcelain Ivory – I bought this ages

don't know why.
– Revlon Colorstay Overtime Sheer lipcolor in Sheer Rosette – very
pretty YLBB color that really does last without drying out my lips.
– Flirt! Chickstick in Delight – awesome formula, just as good as MAC
but cheaper, and this is a really pretty warm YLBB shade on me.

Very big hit... finally able to purchase LouLou, the fragrance I wore
when I got married, thanks to a.f.! My husband is very, very happy and
I love hearing "you smell great" every morning.
Other hits this month...
BB tinted moisturizing balm in extra light. I wear warm ivory
foundation but this is nicer when I'm in a hurry.
BB Rose Dawn (I think) stick blush. Creamy products look better to me
lately–– I look more rested and "fresh faced" as opposed to powder
ones, but...
Benefit (repurchase) Dandelion. This is the one powder blush I still
regularly wear.
BBW Tutti Dolci in Creme Brulee. I know others haven't liked this
scent, but I do! It's just the right amount of sweetness and reminds
me of the time I cooked sweetened, condensed milk down into caramel
sauce.
Nivea skin care. I like the normal skin face wash and the CoQ10
lotions/creams. I wish they made a lip balm!

get
Philosophy to bubble properly. That's why I didn't buy the
Philosophy
bath products but now I understand that it makes a decent body wash
and
I get my bubbles from other sources.
The body wash probably lacks foam stabilizers. Would you mind posting
its ingredients?
water, tea–lauryl sulfate, cocamidopropyl betaine, tea–peg–3 cocamide
sulfate, sodium chloride, glycol stearate, glycerin, peg–150 distearate,
tocopheryl acetate, polyquaternium–7, fragrance, glyceryl
polymethacrylate, propylene glycol, citric acid,
methylchloroisothiazolinone, methylisothiazolinome
Then it's not for lack of foam stabilizer. The cocamidopropyl betaine
should do that.

Lots of hits this month!
BIGGEST hit:
* MURAD DAY REFORM TREATMENT –– this product has changed my skin more than
anything else I've ever used. I'm not a Murad fan, but I got this from Sephora
as a sample and am in love. It completely erases my pores! It's supposed to
be an antioxidant. I'm serious, this stuff is a miracle worker –– especially
beautiful under foundation –– no settling in the pores! I'm in love.
Other hits:
*MD FORTE FACIAL CREAM I with Glycolic Acid. –– I alternate this with Kinerase,
and my over 40 skin has never looked better. Even my mother says I look
younger!
* STILA ILLUMINATING FOUDATION –– another sample from Sephora and another rave.
Gorgeous medium coverage –– exactly what I need. It gives me a glowing
complexion.
* MAYBELLINE DREAM MATTE MOUSSE in Med. 2 –– I didn't love this until I got the
MURAD (see above). It used to make my pores look huge, but with the MURAD
underneath, I look flawless with this foundation. Thank god, I was about to
throw it out and the color is a perfect match for me.
* I.D. BARE MINERALS BLUSH in Beauty (lovely deep pink) and True (glittery
peach –– like NARS Orgasm but better) –– I've been using the Bare minerals
foundation for two years, but have only recently started using their blushes ––
they are DIVINE. Very soft, never streaky, colors are gorgeous. I am addicted.
* I.D. BARE MINERALS EYE shadows in Blush (pale pearly pink) and City Lights
(pearly beigy–pink). Again, very soft, never settles in lines. Goes on sheer
so you can build up as you like.
* HARD CANDY eye shadow in Cotton Candy (pink with a slight sparkle) –– I
bought this at Sephora when I was hunting down a NARS shadow in Fathom.
Fathom was sold out, but a very nice Sephora lady showed me that the Hard Candy
Cotton Candy was the exact same shade –– only much cheaper! Yay!
* JOHN FRIEDA BRILLIANT BRUNETTE SHAMPOO in Espresso. I'm a late lemming to
this but it's fabulous. My hair has lots of shine, and you don't have to use
much of it, it's so concentrated.
* ANN TAYLOR blue velvet jacket. I wear this thing EVERYWHERE. Best bang for
the buck I've gotten in a long time.
Maybes:
? CITY LIPS Collagen Plumping Treatment –– It's okay lip balm, but my lips
aren't any bigger. Got this in a Sephora sample. Probably won't purchase
unless tomorrow I wake up looking like Angelina Jolie.
? JOHN FRIEDA BRILLIANT BRUNETTE CONDITIONER in Espresso –– I think I used too
much of this. Jury still out on this one.
MISSES:
– OLAY EYE LIFTING SERUM –– nothing. In fact, my eyes look worse.
– DARPHIN AROVITA GEL CONTOUR LES YEUX –– ditto.
(I've been looking for a cheaper replacement for my B21 Orlane Anti–Fatigue
eyes, but it seems to be the only thing that works on both undereye circles and
wrinkles in the undereye area.)
– DIANE VON FURSTENBERG ECLIPSTICK –– this is that yellow lipstick looking
thing that is actually a highlighter, which came in a Sephora gold bag. eh.
Definitely will not purchase.
– CSP COEUR DE VAHINE –– I was so excited to get this sample, because I am
dying to hop on the CSP bandwagon –– but this smells seriously bad on me. Sort
of like "Old Lady Perfume" (as my daughter calls it) crossed with a chemical
spill. sigh. I so wanted to become a CSP girl.

Caudalie Gentle Cleanser – fantastic!
Went to my local Sephora looking for Osmotics Gentle Cleansing Milk,
but they only had a few products from the Osmotics line and this
wasn't one of them. SA recommended the Caudalie cleanser – said lots
of people with sensitive skin like it. So I tried it and it is
exactly what my skin needs right now. Non–irritating, non–drying,
gets off makeup & mascara, rinses easily, and subtle nice fragrance.
Smashbox Antishine in Light
OK, I know I've raved about this before, but it's still a hit after
all these years!
UNDECIDED
Prescriptives Super Line Preventor – I got a sample of this with some
other Prescriptives purchases over the summer. Finally got around to
trying it – I've been using it daily for 4 weeks, and *I think* the
lines on my forehead and neck look better. Not sure if it's just my
imagination though! Not sure if "I think" I look about $50. better
(approx. cost of a bottle if I decide to continue). Anybody else use
this stuff?

the other day and it's making my way–overdue–for–a–haircut hair look very

The sheer Nars l/s have a way of going bad faster than their others,
much like Stila's problem w/their sheer l/s, Natalie and Jo being the
2 most notorious ones. I used up my Dolce Vita and Gipsy quickly so
didn't have that problem, but my Tanganyka definitely went bad.

Robyn,
I'm looking for a new facial cleanser that will take all makeup off. I'm
currently using Lancome Galatee Confort Milky Creme Cleanser and I love the

I've never tried an oil; I'm sure it would do a better job. I have normal
skin and hate any oil residue left on my skin so I am thrilled to see that
there is no residue. What type of skin do you have? Also do you by any
chance wear contact lenses and do you have a problem with the oil migrating

wear waterproof makeup. I cannot stand that residue on my lenses and in my

hi jamie,
i have sensitive skin with rosacea, and an oily T–zone. not a contact
wearer though. i have used mineral–oil based cleansers that left
an oily residue in the eyes, but the MAC oil is not like that at all.
it is jojoba–based, i believe. i warm it up in my hands, massage onto
dry face (including eyelids and lashes), then rinse off with warm water.
when the water hits it, it becomes a cloudy color, and rinses off, with
no residue. not drying at all either. i really really really like it.

Well, I certainly appreciate the enabling. The beauty of it is that my skin
is not sensitive and I really can't go wrong in trying this since it removes
makeup so well. But you have given me a little push. Interesting about the

that's one I'll have to try to remember.
