My laptop for travel would just be to get online and check email

I'd rather not go over $800 with my personal laptop...
I would love all the help I can get with this
thanks!!

Why not post this to a computer group who can REALLY give you some
good honest answers???? Why not make the trip to BestBuy and talk to
a sales associate who can explain the pros/cons of each machine you
have posted??? That would be your best bet.
How did you make the decision to buy the one you're using
now?????????? You don't know anything about your memory size or
processor speed????

I'm definitely of the opinion that people NEED DVD burners. CD burners
just aren't enough to do an easy backup of the "My Documents" folder
if you're using your computer for much of anything.

Computers really need 512 MB, despite Bill Gates once saying that
"640K ought to be enough for anybody." (Bill Gates said that before
GUIs got massively deployed.)

I consider a high capacity external storage medium a necessity. DVD
burner is one, or a USB/Firewire external Hard drive. However people
associate the DVD format with video and don't think of using it as
ordinary digital storage.

Agreed, if you're running WinXP

What I Have Now.. pentium 4 2.53 ghz....512 MB of RAM
Unless you're a gamer or do video stuff that should be enough of a
machine for "ordinary" use.
DeskTops....
processor speed 2.66ghz and 512mb DOR Ram memory.. 80 GB hard drive
/dvd / cdrw/ with a 17" flat screen $199 Emachine..Best Buy
It's an okay basic machine.
gateway Intel Pentium 4 processor 520 with hyper threading technology
with color printer ......processor speed 3.0ghz.......1024mb ddr ram
memory....160 gogabyte hard drive double layer ,ultiformat dvdrw
drive... thats 979.97 with a 17 lcd or 799 with a 17 crt...Best Buy
But this one is better.
Lap Tops....
processor speed 1.4ghz and 256mb DDR SDRam memory 40 GIGABTE HARD
DRIVE DVD CDRW DRIVE $499.99 Toshiba.. Best Buy
Pentium M? The RAM is too low.40GB is the minimum HD you'd want, 60
0r 80 would be better
office dept..processor speed 1.3ghz and 256mb memory 40 GIGABTE HARD
DRIVE DVD CDRW DRIVE..wireless 802.11g........ $599
Same considerations
circuit city......Hp Laptop $499 celeron M processor 320 speed 1.3ghz
and 512 KB L2 CACHE 400MHZ FSB...DVD CDRW DRIVE.. 256MB DDR SDRAM...40
BG HARD DRIVE
again 256 is too low
circuit city...Toshiba.. Mobile Intel Pentium 4..518 with
Hyper–threading tech..2.8 ghz..1mb L2 Cache...533mhz FSB.. DVD..CDRW
Drive...256 MB DDR SDRAM..40GB jard Drive.. $699
Up this one to 512MB and a larger hard drive and it would be my choice
I'm trying to decied if I should even wait in a long line for any of
the above computers or if they are even a good deal..
These are basic low end machines for the most part.
The computer I have now works fine but was wanting a cheap laptop to

around on..
My laptop for travel would just be to get online and check email
,chat, surf the web and to upload pics from cam while on trips.. And to
type papers on..
any of these laptops would handle that, up the RAM to 512MB though
and upgrade to WinXP pro.(it's preferred)
I'd rather not go over $800 with my personal laptop...
I would love all the help I can get with this
thanks!!

DVD = "Digital Versatile Disc" or "Digital Video Disc" early on, now
they just want to call it DVD.
The Philips licensing system is laid out so DVD Video is a specific
application of DVD–ROM.

You go buy a new machine, it's going to have WinXP on it unless you go
through a lot of gyrations... or if it's a Macintosh.
Some of the places that do custom configs will sell you Win2K on
request but they both like to use real DRAM in huge quantities.

Posting to a computer group might be an idea but there are AFers who
are quite knowledgeable about computers that I would most certainly
trust with computer advice. Charles Perrin for example.
As for the SA's at Best Buy, their knowledge, for the most part, is
not up to what I would consider a "proper" standard. People would be
better off in most cases taking along a computer knowledgeable friend
or asking a customer in Best Buy who seems to know what they are doing.
How did you make the decision to buy the one you're using
now?????????? You don't know anything about your memory size or
processor speed????
The OP did mention the CPU and RAM of her current machine and what she
was planning on doing with any machine she bought.
