Alternative to brushing suede

"cofarb" <do...@cofarb.com>
I know that we're supposed to brush suede to raise the nap and remove dry
dirt, but I've never found it to be very helpful in the dirt department.
Yesterday it occurred to me that instead of rubbing in the dirt with a
brush, I might be able to lift a little of the dirt with a clean sticky
roller. The roller definitely picked up a little of the shmutz and it
didn't seem to be so sticky that it damaged the suede at all. (Definitely
do this at your own risk––and make sure it's a fresh section of the sticky
paper.) I'm definitely going to try this when salt from the outside of my
car gets all over my suede jacket and pants.

Interesting. And I just purchased a new suede brush. Are you using the
washable roller or the kind where you peel off the sticky to reveal new
sticky?

I thought another option was to use one of those "art gum" erasers that you get
at an art supply store. I've never tried it myself, though.
I've used them successfully to remove smudges from nubuck shoes.

I would be very afraid that this would just smear the dirt or worse. Now
I'm even thinking that a vacuum cleaner with the little brush attachment
would be a good first line attack on dried–on dirt on suede.

The sticky/reveal new paper kind. That way I'm sure the sticky stuff is
absolutely clean.
