layering t–shirts

catmom <princess.san...@gmail.com>
I really like the look of layered t–shirts, and plan on doing this, but
don't want to look odd. Are there any do's or don'ts with this?
necklines, lengths, fabrics etc
Any colors which I absolutely shouldn't layer together?
A gal I work with is able to pull this off flawlessly, and looks
especially great layering a long sleeve with short – I can't ask her
these questions as I'd feel like a dork, hence coming here to the a.f
experts :–)

I don't think there are rules. My daughter just showed me two camisole
type tops she will wear under shirts she has specifically so the edges
will show and contrast with the shirts. Great ideas but I'd never think
of them. One thing she said is the longer shirt draws attention to the
hips and curves. She is comfortable with it because she is tall and
comfortable with her shape. I hope this makes sense.

then it would make sense that the longer shirt be in a dark color,
if its going to "highlight" my hips!

Whatever the rules are, I'm sure I broke every one of them today even though
I think it turned out OK. Under I wore a Petit Bateau l/s v–neck snapfront t
cardigan in a brick color (has scalloped trim at neck and wrists). On top I
wore an Old Navy white–on–white shadow striped super thin and fitted l/s
scoopneck t that has finished but unhemmed edges. The bottom piece is long
so it sticks out underneath the lighter top piece. I wore this with natural
colored ON cargo pants.
I look kind of silly in short sleeve over long unless it's summer.

Choose tees made of thin, soft fabric with no stiffness. C&C
California makes tshirts that are meant for layering, but they're
expensive. (There must be knockoffs by now.) You might be able to
get some ideas by checking web sites that sell C&C.

If you are looking for low end KOs, I know Gap, Abercrombie, J. Crew, and
Express have the thin tshirts. I would venture to say you could find them at
Kohl's as well.
