When to wear a black suit?

ucp
Under what circumstances would it be appropriate for a man to wear a black
suit (not a tux)?

In my opinion––and you WILL get a stream of posts (although not from Emily
Post, her heirs or assigns; nor, for that matter, from Miss Manners)
strenuously disagreeing with me on this point––you may wear them at funerals
and other circumstances in which you may wish to indicate you are in mourning.

When you are in the Mafia ;o)
When you become an undertaker.
When you put on a stovepipe hat and a goatee.
(Yes people, I'm just kidding)

Whew...because stovepipe hats are SO 1860s.

DH has a beautiful lightweight black wool suit he wears as frequently as
he wears any of his other suits. We must get beyond the stereotype of
black for mourning.

Black is wonderful in men's suits. They are good for daywear and evening. Wear
it with a white on white shirt and a very colorful tie – perhaps something from
Nicole Miller.
A tie with an intense red goes especially well.
If you wish a little different look, wear it with a black shirt. Again the tie
is very important.
And, if you really wish to make a statement, with a hat.

I think a black suit is suitable anytime! My husband has one that looks
dressier with a white shirt and tie and more casual with a colored shirt.

Audrey,
What's the point of being hidebound, reactionary and
archconservative–to–the–bone if I can't hold fast to ancient and out of fashion
views? :–)

I don't think I'll *strenuously* object (I'm taking cold medicine that
kicks like a 3 martini lunch without any of the positive effects), but I do
disagree. To my eye, the black suit is comparable to the charcoal or navy
suit, and the cut and particular fabric will have more to do with its
appropriateness than the color.
And, of course, I am fond of my black sharkskin suit. I like to think of it
as what a tasteful gangster might wear.
