What I bought this weekend with your help

Maribeth Mason <marib...@its.caltech.edu>
Incorporating all of your excellent fashion ideas, I went back to the
local BCBG, catalog in hand, to try on clothes.
It turns out that they actually have very little from the catalog left
in stock. Nevertheless, after trying on about 40(!) items, I did
manage to buy what I think will be some useful things:
–– A white wool blazer. It seems basic and versatile so I'm hoping I
couldn't go wrong. They had it displayed with jeans but it also
looked nice with black pants. (Unfortunately, BCBG pants fit me
funny.)
–– Four nylon/spandex V–neck tops with a little ruching around the
midsection, which I thought I'd hate but is actually quite flattering.
Two are sleeveless (dark green and "cherry rose pink") and two
long–sleeved (sky blue and black). Four might seem ridiculous but
when I find something I like, I tend to buy a bunch!
–– A gold necklace with some beads on it and a ribbon tie at the back.
I also got a jacket from Arden B which is kind of a dusty rose color,
with cotton striped panels alternating with silk brocade–looking
panels. I confess I'm not sure what it goes with other than jeans,
but hey, it's cute.
Yay for progress,

I got the black one last weekend! It's a great top and I wore it today. I am
wearing it with a silk tiger print skirt I got at Barami that also has
ruching around the waist and hips. The ruching of both pieces flows together
very nicely. Chocolate brown stretch suede knee–high boots are part of this
outfit. I am looking for a chocolate brown faux fur vest and an amber
necklace in a dark setting to complete this outfit.

Four of the *right* top makes plenty of sense. If you have a versatile
black skirt and a pair of black pants or jeans that go work well with the
shirts and the blazer, you've got a great start on a wardrobe. I would also
look for a black cardigan––maybe two (a waist–length one and another that is
longer like a jacket) that you can throw over the shirts to give them a
totally different look than the white blazer provides. I find it really
simple to do a black bottom, black cardigan or jacket, and then put the
color close to my face with a top like you've described. Black tights are
always easy, but if you can find tights to match the tops, you can have a
fun look, too.
Oh, and try the silk brocake jacket over a little black dress. Let the
jacket be the focus of the whole outfit. And don't wait for a fancy
occasion! Wear it and enjoy it!

you bid and win, please let me know so I can throw in some extras.

***** Totally agree here. you might want to think about a bright color
(pink, red, the right shade of green) cardigan.. check out Macys for a great
sale right now.. and if you want to go neutral, I would highly recommend
that black and a grey cardigan. I would think a more jacket like cropped at
the waist one would be good

***that jacket sounds heavenly. try it with jeans too and a little cami
for an evening look

Pants are probably one of the hardest things to fit. When I find a maker
that fits me correctly, I stock up.

Not ridiculous, because these will be infinitely practical. You can mix
and match them with lots of items.

Tweed skirt, trousers, other skirts. Once you start playing around with
outfits, I think you'll find many things it'll go with. :)
