A poll: How much $

"cofarb" <do...@cofarb.com>
Confession time:
I bought a pair of gray suede Chanel "hiking" (hahaha) boots at the Saks Off
5th outlet the other day. (See/mock them at
www.cofarb.com/chanelshoes1.jpg) The original tagged price was an
incredibly obscene $644. The shoes are really cute but I would NEVER spend
that much on a pair of shoes. I *did* pay a little over $100 (sale price
plus another 10% off for opening an account) which is still a lot for shoes
that are basically like Timberland boots with some extra doodads.
It made me curious about "values" and prices we actually pay for
footwear––and whether we regret the big ticket purchases.
So here are the three poll questions (you should describe the shoes, too,
please):
1. What was the highest *original* price of a pair of shoes or boots you've
bought?
2. How much did *you* pay for them?
3. What is the highest price you've ever paid for footwear?
Cofarb says:
1. Definitely $644 on the silly, impractical grey suede Chanel hiking
boots.
2. As noted, I paid a little over $100 for them––about 75% off the original
price. Probably still too much.
3. Ahhh, pink Sendra leather boots with reverse flower appliques in other
pastel colors. Full price at Nordstrom was $200––and worth every penny!
They are 4 or 5 years old and I still love wearing them.
thanks,
cofarb

Those "hiking" boots are *adorable*!
I just ordered another pair of hand made shooting boots, the obscene price
includes having both feet cast so a last could be made, custom carving on
the leather, custom cast pewter clasps, and a lifetime guarantee on leather
and all the work.
However, I know they'll get worn at least 60 days a year, and well fitting
boots are important to me, so the cost is an investment.
They'll be delivered in April 2005.

I think the hiking boots are a wonderful purchase. I bought Cole Haan
knee high brown boots that cost close to $400 with tax. I didn't wait
for a sale because I figured I had waited my entire life for brown knee
high boots. Occasionally I get great shoes on sale but usually I pay
full price.

I'm a 'tenderfoot', and have taken too many shoes bought on sale to Salvation
Army because they hurt my feet. I no longer buy shoes on sale for this reason.
The most I've paid for a pair of shoes, to my recollection, is about $260, for
Arche ankle boots that are unbelievably comfortable. My usual comfortable
price for shoes is in the $100–150 range. If they cost more than that, they'd
better be especially comfortable and versatile.

Thanks, Sandra. They aren't pink (yet) but pink *would* be even more
adorable––and the existing gray laces are stupidly long. (Maybe Chanel
figures that anyone willing to pay that much for shoes needs extra long
laces so her caretaker can double–knot them! <G>)*
I keep a vast collection of laces that I somehow accumulated over the years
because laces are often too long. I know there is one pair that is dark
purple on one side and lavender on the other side; another pair is light
pink/dark pink; one of them will be perfect. Thanks for the cute+ idea.

Not miserly; just really smart. The RL shoes sound loverly––and you'd have
to be fairly crazy to pay big bucks for such impractical shoes. But paying
a good chunk of change for foot–friendly shoes that will get a lot of
mileage is the *sole* of practicality <g>. (But it's the $600 RLs for $18

I'm also wondering now how low prices will go at places like L&T before they
simply outsource the goods to places like Marshall's or even SalVal. Does
anyone know if there is a specific policy at big chains like the May Company

I *almost* bought a pair of $300 black mid–heel strappy sandals, on
sale for around $100, from Filene's basement clearance rack this past
summer. But I had my DF in tow and he balked at the price tag and
convinced me not to buy them. I regret it to this day, because they
were extremely comfortable, a classic style, and the leather was like
butter. Had I bought them I am sure I'd have worn them constantly. But
he talked me out of them on the basis that we were in the "bargain"
basement and $100 was, to him, no bargain. I ended up buying a marked
down pair of red sandals that were something like $10 but I only ended
up wearing once because they hurt my feet. :–(
Otherwise, I usually don't have much access to shoes much over the
$100–125 mark. I'd probably be in trouble if I did!
I can still remember the first time I ever spent more than $100 on
shoes. It was years ago in my late 20s, when they'd opened up a
Nordstrom's near where I was living at the time. Went shopping with my
gf for the opening. They had music playing and were serving wine to the
shoppers. It was probably the wine that made me splurge on those shoes,
a pair of classic black pumps (I think Nine West or Enzo's, can't
remember now), that turned out to be the most comfy shoes and I got
years of mileage out of them.
That was the turning point for me, when I realized that there is a big
difference between quality shoes and bargain shoes, that you do get
what you pay for. Until then, I was a shoe–aholic and would feed my
addiction with cheap, inexpensive shoes that were made out of
(horrors!) man–made materials, the type of shoes that while cute and
trendy made your feet sweat and the heel would inevitably fall off
after one season. Back then there was this shoe store kinda like a
Payless where I would go and buy several pairs of shoes for under $100.
But the purchase of those $100 shoes changed everything, and I started
preferring having a few well–made high–quality shoes in basic brown or
black, instead of a closet full of cheap shoes.
Of course I don't usually pay the full $100 for a $100 pair of shoes! I
do buy on sale at Macy's and frequent places like TJ Maxx, Marshalls,
Filene's Basement, and DFW. But if I do find a pair of classic shoes
that I know I'll wear a few times a week or more, I don't bother
waiting for the sale and I will pay the original price.
While we're on the subject of shoes, can I tell you about my newest
acquisition, about a month ago? A pair of $40 (on sale – don't remember
what the original price was) black patent leather driving moccasins
from Filene's. These are the cutest, most comfy shoes and I'm wearing
them often, with jeans, cords, and even with sweats.
I have this new deal with my DF, who has bargained with me that
whenever I buy a pair of heels I also buy a pair of flats. He is
concerned because I'm always wearing heels even though I am not
supposed to due to my back issues. I like his deal so I have been
keeping the bargain and as a result I have these new black patent

The black patent driving mocs sound really cute. And the logic of buying
quality shoes is undeniable, imho. (Bell motorcycle helmets used to have an
ad that read, "If you have a $10 head, wear a $10 helmet." I'd say the same
for shoes.)
I'm not sure about your deal of buying flats whenever you buy heels, but
hey, anything that basically doubles your shoe–buying experience, well, at
least it's good for the economy. (BTW, there's a reason they have those
"husband benches" outside stores. Park the DF on one of 'em and find
yourself a "new bestfriend"––a woman or gay guy––inside the store!)

They were $150. And while they ARE really cute they are also
extremely impractical, and if I am honest w/ myself I will admit that
I bought them primarily because of the "discount". Cost per wear is
astronomical, since I've worn them, yes, just once.
3. What is the highest price you've ever paid for footwear?
Around this same time I fell in love with a Prada sandal, red with
pink leather flowers. They were originally in the $300's but on sale
and with the 10% discount for opening an account I think that got them
down to around $180. Also astronomical cost per wear, I think I've
worn them once too.
For some reason I can't bring myself to part with either of these
shoes. Probably, in part, because they cancel out all of the cheapie
shoes I buy and satisfy my internal snob.

1. Definitely $644 on the silly, impractical grey suede Chanel hiking
boots.
2. As noted, I paid a little over $100 for them––about 75% off the original
price. Probably still too much.
3. Ahhh, pink Sendra leather boots with reverse flower appliques in other

I don't have a lot of experience with Off 5th, Nordstrom Rack and NM Last
Call. My few experiences have been very varied. (I went to Last Call with
a couple of a.f.ers on a trip to Texas a couple years ago and we spent a lot
of our time mocking some hideous––and still hideously expensive––clothing
that was severely damaged. OTOH, I found some adorable Custo Barcelona
shirts for next to nothing. I'd say those places are at least as
hit–or–miss as Marshall's but the prices are quite high.) Also, have you
tried to develop a "bestfriendship"<G> with a salesperson? He/she might
give you a call when your dream item is going to be reduced. It couldn't
hurt to ask.
At the very least, I would suggest setting ebay for an ongoing search. You
can set it to notify you whenever something with your specifications is
listed. It's a great way to find out when your "evergreen" and "holy grail"
items are listed. (I use it for certain obscure designers and also for
skincare and cosmetics.)

They're so great that my husband ended up getting a pair, too. Yes,

that much for any other shoes, but I didn't even bat an eyelash at
paying it for hiking boots.
In terms of the biggest differential between the original price of a
