how to coordinate checked garbardine pants?

I bought, for the first time in my life, checked garbardine pants.
They are brown with a fine black criss–cross patern. I have no idea
what sort of things I can wear with them though. I assume I should
stay away from checked shirts, but what will work?

Camel, off–white, white, black, cream––very safe and definitely would work.
Possibly pink, if it's the right shade. Possibly pale buttery yellow, too. I
might even go with pale shades of lavender or violet.
You could do a checked shirt, IMHO, but you'd have to be really careful about
how the patterns go together.
