Any AFers from Sydney out there?

lipglossjun...@gmail.com (Lipgloss Junkie)
Hi all...
Just wondering if there any Aussie Sydneysiders out there who are into
alt.fashion. I'll be moving to the Sydney area soon and need
resources on any good magazines, websites, newpaper columnists to read
etc. I've already been reading Vogue OZ, but it focuses on luxury
brands...was wondering more about the everyday fashionable stuff.
I'd appreciate any info on living, eating and shopping of all kinds
(from grocery to furniture to fashion).
We're not even sure where to live yet! We're moving in January.
Cheers,
Melanie
ps...if anyone wants resources for Vancouver, BC...I've got a few!

From what I can tell from reading AU/NZ writers to my Web site,
Australian English is a unique hybrid that combines the most
inexplicable features of British English and Aborigine. <grin/duck>
I can tell you if you want some "Converse Basketball Boots" ("Chucks")
you had better bring them as they're reportedly hard to find Down
Under.... but ingenious teenagers order them from the other side of
the globe (and report that red high–tops get a lot of eyeballs!).

Target Australia has much less "Tar–zhay cachet" than Target USA. It's
more like "zee K–Mart."
In fact, Target Australia is a sister company to K–Mart Australia.

Charles, are you saying that if we purchases a kazillion pairs of Chucks
and took them to Oz, set up shop, we'd be rich?
(We meaning me of course)

I think there are some of us out there, but not many. How old are you
(if I may ask!). Some fairly mainstream magazines are:
Dolly – for the teenagers
Cleo/Cosmo – for the 20's. There's a lot of "lifestyle" stuff in both
of these (sex/boyfriend maintenance/party stuff)
Marie Claire – for the 30's who can't afford the Vogue lifestyle (that
would be me). Realistic and some "aspirational" clothes and some
pretty good articles.
Bazaar – I don't read this much, but it's fairly similar to Vogue.
Shop 'till You Drop – attempting to be the Australian Lucky equivalent,
but very focussed on the Cleo/Cosmo market.
As far as Sydney itself goes, the most traditionally "fashionable"
place to be is in the Eastern suburbs (Bondi, Double Bay). It's
expensive (and remember that Sydney is in the top 10 most expensive
cities to live in list), but it's where the fashionable "A–list" hangs
out.
Most other areas have at least one or two major shopping centres (malls
really), which can get pretty generic (but that's OK, 'cause I'm a
pretty generic kinda gal :) ).
Sydney is *very* diverse. Depending on how old you are, what your
general tastes are and where you're going to end up living there are a
lot of really great places to be, and a lot of straight suburbia.
It's going to be a pretty big shock to the system – you'll be arriving
in the middle of summer and it's going to be hot and humid. The last
two days have been in the high 20s and low 30s (celcius), and it's not
even real summer yet!
I'm sure you'll love it here. It's a great city :)
Julie.

I was really hoping to get some Sydney info...I've been to Target when
visiting Australia. It still is pretty cool in Oz...way better that
Kmart and Coles. Lots of great home stuff.
But if anyone knows of some great websites with Sydney shopping and
sourcing info...sample sales? special sales? neighborhoods for
boutiques and shops?
Cheers,
Melanie
