Hermes birkin bag, is ther really a waiting list ?

Hi all,
I been trying to look for a handbag and yesterday I called Hermes
boutique in London and asked about their waiting list for the birkin
bag, I was told that they just had a cancellation and I could have one
if I wanted it, but I have to go down to the shop right away.
Unfortunately the boutique is in London and I live 3 hours away. I
think it might still be possible for me to get this bag if I call them
up tomorrow and pay over the phone with my credit card.
The bag is a 32cm black leather birkin bag, price at £3,500. do you
think it's worth it ? is it really that hard to get hold of this bag ?
Is there really is a long waiting list(2yrs) if it's true why would
they offer it to me ? they must have a long list of customers waiting
for this bag.
I have a feeling the waiting list may not really be that long, and
once you put your name down, they will be contacting you pretty soon
to say they had a cancellation. Still I'm undecided on wether to call
them up tomorrow and buy the bag or not, I havne't even seen the bag
and it's not cheap, do you think it's worth it ???

Wait...wouldn't there be people ALREADY on the waiting list who, by all rights,
would get 1st crack at it?

From what I'm told they don't have a waiting list, with the boutiques
in the UK, you can't order a bag and expect it to arrive in 2years
time. What they can do is take your name/address and contact number
and when they have new bags in stock, they will contact the people on
this list. They call this a cancellation list.
I don't know why they offered it to me first, maybe they just don't
have anyone on the cancellation list?
However, if you want to order a bag, you may still be able to order
one from the Hermes head office in Paris, as my sister was able to
order one couple of years ago by selecting the leather, colour, and
style, but the price was a lot more expensive than my bag.

I think that they are pulling a fast one––I'm sure that they can come up with a
bag if someone is willing to fork out £3500. As to whether it's worth it or
not, I'm not into designer bags so something that costs $7000 would not be
worth it. But everyone has things that they indulge themselves in.... if you
can get it, does it matter whether there's a real waiting list or not?

I did go for it, first thing this morning, I called them up and the
bag was still available, deep down I was hoping they would say that it
was sold, but it wasn't... not only that but they have two in stock !!
anyway I brought the 35cm black togo leather birkin, with the silver
metal work. I was feeling a bit guilty at first, seem like a stupid
amount of money to spend on a handbag, but I been checking on the web
and most shops that manage to get hold of this bag are selling it for
£4,500 up to £7,600, it's just crazy. If anyone wants one, you should
call Hermes, not just in London but try glasgow or even manchester,
I'm sure they must have one or two cancellation from time to time:)

if you have the means go for it.
The SF Hermes store, and, as I understand it, many others in the US, will
not take credit card purchases over the phone. The itmes are too high–priced
and thus Hermes is a target from fraudulent cc users. So that take a big hit
with even one fraudulent purchase. You have to go in person to make a
big–ticket purchase with a credit card.

The wait usually depends on the Hermès bag one wants, whether or not
it has to me custom made (skins, finish, hardware and size are just some
choices to be made) and the scarcity of the bag itself (new models often
sell through more rapidly than older established models). It could also

store, or the time it takes to make the bag itself.
IME with Hermès, their representatives will bend over backwards to
find an item a customer desires as long as it's currently in production,
whether it's a scarf, an item of apparel, and even if it's not in
production, if it can be custom ordered/made, as in a bag. In the case of
some bags, seven months is probably close to an average wait. I mean, the
bags don't roll off sweatshop assembly lines. In the OP's case, it sounds
like, as some have said, it's more of a cancellation list than a 'wait
list' or a custom–order list, the latter two of which are sometimes used
interchangeably to describe the same thing.
