Lerner Catalog?

Chris Braun <braun_ch...@mindspring.com>
These guys keep sending me catalogs, and some of the clothes look
cute. They're quite inexpensive, so I wouldn't expect fantastic
quality, but I wonder if it's at least acceptable. Does anyone have
any experience ordering from the?. Do the clothes at least match the
pictures, and is the sizing what one might expect? I've had okay
experiences with some inexpensive catalogs (like Blair), but my
experience with Newport News has been terrible, so I'm reluctant to
trust this one.

Chris,
Is this the same as the Lerner New York store in my mall? If they are,
please keep in mind that I haven't shopped there in a couple of years due to
advanced pregnancy and consequently small children (gotta love it!) but I
found acceptable quality and good prices. They are comparable in my book to
The Gap. But I shop more at Lerner (when I do) than The Gap. I like their
items. I have not catalogue ordered from them but I do find the sizes to be
true in the store. For your comparison, I am a size 12 and was probably a
10 when I was buying their clothes.
FWIW, others here have opined that Newport News' quality sucks. I ordered
from them many years ago when they were a fledgling company and was halfway
satisfied but it has been many, many years. I would trust the general
opinion at AF that Newport News is a losing game. I've heard that many
things are on backorder and quality is really bad.
HTH,
Jamie

I don't know if the catalog is the same as the stores or not. I've
seen the stores occasionally but I don't thing I've ever shopped in
one.
My experience with Newport News wasn't back order –– which I've heard
about here –– but sizing and quality/style. I order two pairs of
pants. One was a pair of their jeans. I generally wear a 6 and
ordered a 6. These were so small that I could not even pull them over
my hipbones. I have never tried on a size 6 this small –– at the
smallest, some might be hard to button, but these were ridiculously
small. The other pair were pants shown in the catalog as extremely
wide–legged. The pants that came –– also a size 6 –– fit just fine,
but were no wider legged than ordinary boot–cut pants. I'm wondering
if this was because I ordered a petite and they just made these by
cutting several inches off the regular length and ended up with
bottoms much smaller in circumference. But someone here said the
pictures are not taken with the same clothes they actually sell, so
who knows. But I won't buy from them again.

Probably a good bet not to. I know it's tempting when you find a store that
carries reasonably priced merchandise. But, as you can attest, the headache
is not worth it, especially when you've already been warned with your own
experiences. Listen to your head.
