Karl Lagerfeld for H&M

annecat.dont.s...@no.spam.bredband.net (Anne Ehrenholm)
I think it's really, really interesting that Karl Lagerfeld chose to do a
special collection for H&M! It was released all over Europe (maybe in the US
too?) yesterday, in selected stores, and was sold out within an hour. I never
got a chance to see the actual clothes, but the ads look great. I wonder if
they'll re–stock, or if they'll keep it like this to keep up the hype.

According to the NYTimes, same thing happened at the NYC flagship store on
Fifth Ave. and 51st Street. His collection isn't available in every H&M store
and I can't tell from the website which ones are stocking it.
The Times article says they'll be getting in more shipments soon; I hope so,
since I'd love to have a crack at this stuff!

anyway, on e–bay you can see more clothes than on the actual H&M website!
fun...and the prices are going up...

Yes, they launched the collection in the US as well, and in fact I
just bought three items from the collection and am wearing two as I
write this!
The stuff is lovely, beautifully made (for H&M, ie) and nice quality!
Very Lagerfeld, too, you can recognize his style. I bought a fitted
white cotton shirt with a pleated front and a very high and stiff
collar (that's his signature look, isn't it) and very long narrow
French–cuff style sleeves for $49.90. It has pearly buttons inscribed
with his name on top and H&M below.
I also bought a black fitted deep V–neck sweater that also has extra
long narrow sleeves and two pockets on the front at hip height, the
length just covers the botton. The sweater is a viscose and rayon mix
and costs $49.90 as well. It has two horizontal stripes in white and
red just under the chest and on the sleeves. I find it quite lovely.
Really comfortable, and really flattering, actually. Works
beautifully with the shirt or on its own.
The trousers are a smooth stretch wool, actually 98% wool and the rest
is probably spandex or something (can't run down now to check).
They're a narrow cut and come really long so you can hem them to fit
you perfectly. I found them very flattering as well. They cost
$49.90 too. Unfortunately I didn't have time to try them on so bought
them in a 36 (which H&M translates to a 6 in the US, and which in
principle is wrong, because a 36 is more like a 4). The 36 turned out
to be way too big. I hope they have them in 34 still.
For the rest of the collection, which is extensive I'd say – there
were a few silk blouses, several silk tops, a rollneck top, a few
dresses, a jacket to match the trousers, a coat, and another jacket I
think. Oh they also had these rather cool mercerized cotton T–shirts
for $19.90 with a Lagerfeld portrait on them, beautiful quality.
The dominant colour of the collection is black with a bit of white and
a bit of red here and there. And there's also a unisex scent for
$19.90 called Liquid Karl, which smells lovely, rather like one of the
Helmut Lang perfumes for men which I recall a gay friend of mine in
Miami wore and which I always found very sexy.
Oh and there's also a pair of sunglasses in his signature style, I
forget what the price was.
I was in a hurry so couldn't check out the collection in detail, but
he definitely doesn't seem to have compromised his design principles,
everything I saw looked great.
They seemed to have plenty of stuff out on the sales floor, so maybe
the the location where I saw it (Cambridge Galleria Mall in MA) didn't
experience the onslaught other branches have.

I saw the Karl Lagerfeld collection at the H&M store in Amsterdam and
found it really awful. Everything in black, dozens and dozens of the
SAME dresses. You know they'll all turn up at the same time at one of
several night clubs here in town. Ugly baggy chiffon blouses and
dresses, tacky jackets. I consider it nothing less than a disaster.

Glad to hear it! (Since I never got to see it.) :) Apparently Karl Lagerfeld
got very upset with H&M, and has now said that he'll never work with them
again. Two main reasons:
1. They made too few clothes. The idea was to make it accessible – not have it
sold out in an hour.
2. They made it in larger sizes. Karl said that he only makes fashion for
thin people. Charming, eh?

I never cared for his work. It's his attitude that turns me off to anything he
touches.

Re: #2: I'd say that H&M only makes clothes for thin people! I wear a 0–2
in most US sizes and sometimes need a 6 at H&M (though most often I just
can't get their adult sizes to fit me at all because they seem to be
designed for very tall, long–waisted, very slender women). There's nothing
wrong with being tall and slender (I would LOVE to be built that way) but I
think Karl went to the right place if he believes people should have to be
built like that to buy and wear his clothes.
