Anybody been to an Aveda training salon?

melmel_o_r...@yahoo.com (Lululemon)
Hi all,
My regular (and cheap) hairdresser is out of commission for a long
while (about to give birth). I'm used to paying about 100 or so for
color or highlights...I've been phoning around and it looks like I'd
be paying closer to 200 now. wah!
So...anybody been to an Aveda training salon where the student works
on you? I've never tried it. And if it's color only, I figure it can
always be fixed. I'm brave enough...I don't stress much as long as the
color looks somewhat normal.
What do you guys think of braving it with a training colorist?
Cheers!

I go to an Aveda Institute fairly regularly and always had good
experiences. The prices are not that much less than most salons in
town and appointments are kind of hard to get, so lots of other people
must be happy with it, too. The instructors check with each client
during the service and evaluate the end result with the student and
client. If you're not happy, it will be fixed. Should be fine.

I just went for the 2nd time 2 weeks ago.
I went because I had been unhappy with my last two salons (well not
the salon but the stylists there). I am not comfortable changing
stylists w/in the salon so that means finding a whole new salon. The
Aveda institute is right across the street from the grocery store I go
to so I figured, why not? They can't do any worse than I do to
myself, and I was thinking about just highlighting and trimming my own
hair.
A partial highlight AND a cut is $31! How can you beat that??
However – to do both they need a LONG time – like 4 or more hours.
The first time I went the girl was more advanced in the program and
didn't take as long. However on that day they were shorthanded w/
supervisors. I think this girl was a little TOO self assured. She
left my highlights in way too long and they were almost white in the
front. My hair wound up breaking off quite a bit in one area. It
wasn't horrible but nothing I'd want to repeat. The cut was great.
I went back 8 weeks later and this girl was very new. I was sure to
tell them about what happened last time so they would be extra
careful. I was a little concerned when the instructor was telling the
student how to do my highlights and the student kept repeating it
wrong. The instructor repeated it so many times *I* could have done
it. Luckily, the instructor wound up doing most of the work including
the entire cut and blow dry. The results were better than the first
time.
Like you, I'm not real worried when it comes to getting my hair right.
Honestly, I don't think I looked any better or worse coming out of
either of these appts. than when I paid $100 more. So I'm more than
happy to spend that $100 on something else.
Good luck!

I've had my color done at an Aveda training salon, and they turned my
hair a greenish tint. The problem though wasn't with the color, but
that she washed my hair with Black Malva shampoo after, and my porous
hair soaked up the black shampoo and turned a greenish tint. They had
to wash my hair several times with a detozifier to correct it. But
after a few washes, the color wasn't bad; I've gone to regular salons
and had worse. It does take the students a long time––I'm talking
several hours––for the process, since they have to be checked on a
lot, and since they're not experienced. I would definitely bring a
photo of the color you'd like, and make sure that not only the
student, but her instructor sees it so they can consult on what
they'll use to get those results.

I should add one more thing––one of my good friends actually works in
an Aveda training salon training as an esthetician, and she warned me
to never get my hair done there, so maybe she's seen more horror
stories.

I've been to a regular Aveda Salon but not the training school salon. I've
had friends go to training salons owned by other companies like Joico or
Gene Juarez and it didn't always turn out good. I'd not go that route if it
were me...
