What I *bought* today

Trilby <p...@LOVELYmidway.SPAMuchicago.edu>
I took my children to the Lincoln Square neighborhood of Chicago to
visit Timeless Toys and get ideas for Christmas presents. While there I
scored:
Merz Apothecary: tons of great soaps for TSMIM's Christmas stocking
International Fashions: this is a store that sells "trachtenmode," i.e.,
German/Austrian clothes. I was in a Gorsuch–catalog mood, so I bought a
pair of stretch jeans that are almost impossible to describe. They're
constructed with a six–button flap front along the lines of sailor
pants, the buttons are made of horn, there is suede trim on the pockets,
and flowers embroidered up the legs. Should I call them oompah pants or
lederjeans? ;)
And a red boiled wool jacket with a hood, edelweiss embroidered tape
trim, and embroidery on the patch pockets. Also two pairs of socks like
the ones in the Gorsuch catalog, cream colored cable knit anklets with
lace cuffs and a pewter button, and black with a jacquard edelweiss design.
Also an adorable denim dress for my daughter.
By the way, I have zero Alpine ancestry. This is simply what happens
when you think you're going to Salzburgbut the trip gets cancelled at
the last minute.
For an idea of what's inspiring me:
http://www.gorsuchltd.com/
And BTW––check out the Lambertson/Truex "Camden" bag in chocolate brown
suede and/or alligator. Totally to die for! I'm adding it to my
Christmas list!

My daughter and I had a great time this afternoon. We went to a new
shopping center in the north part of town and went in two new boutiques.
At the first one, She She, I bought her a tee shirt for her birthday.
It says Fresno Motel on the front and has a vintage style picture of a
girl with a one piece swimsuit and swim cap diving off a board into a
pool. The back says "no vacancy." The store carries Diane von
Furstenberg, Three Dots, James Perse, Tara Tarantino and lots of lines
that are new to me. Next door was a clothing store with limited
clothing but shoes by Marc Jacobs, Christian Louboutin and Christian
Lacroix. Unbelievable and they even had some size 41s, my size. From
there we went to the Kliszewski at the opposite end of town to oogle the
beautiful glass pieces http://www.guild.com/artist/6423.html. We then
went to Ancient Pathways, a great yarn store in the Tower District. I
bought two skeins of yarn in a variegated black, gray and white wool, to
make a scarf for a girlfriend. Our last stop was the independent book
store at a local shopping center. I bought a diary to keep track of
books for a book club grab bag gift, two copies of Four Seasons in Five
Senses bu local author David Mas Masumoto and a copy of the new Gourmet
Cookbook edited by Ruth Reichl. We had nonfat decaf lattes, gingerbread
and eggnog, at Starbucks while we waited for the books to be wrapped.

My daughter and I had a marathon shopping spree today at fun, independent
shops, and took care of the rest of our girlfriends' holiday gifts.
We found great wine tasting party sets – with invitations, score cards, and
other party necessities,
leather cell phone cases, (I bought lime green with a big orange leather flower
sewn on the front)
absolutely gorgeous chunky beaded party spreaders,
a black ballet sweater,
pink beaded/sequined bolero
& black goucho pants, (lol! they look adorable on her) – these gifts are for
DD and I will wrap them up, though she tried them on. The pink bolero is going
back to college to be worn throughout the holiday season, though.
and really cute purses with huge bits on the front that are very reasonable
facsimilies of gucci's bags –
also found a beautiful handmade pin in the shape of a pea, with pearls in
graduated sizes as the peas – just stunning, and my S–I–L will love it
and a handmade snowman box to wrap the gift in – from Twist, an amazing store
with the most unusual items
She also found a great BR scarf and a skirt at A&F for other friends on a
previous trip.
we are done shopping for our girlfriends!
my next priority is to get party invitations printed and mailed early next
week.

Actually yesterday. I'm down for the count with the flu, and I took a sick
day. I signed on to check emails, and conveniently, Sephora and Saks both sent
emails telling me it wasn't too late to get stuff shipped by Christmas, so
feeling sorry for myself, I took some retail medicine:
from Sephora:
City Lips set of 5 glosses (I have the clear one now, and I've never had
anything keep my lips as soft and unchapped as City Lips. I can never be
without it again)
Kenzoki Energizing Bamboo Leaf Face Mask (I have no idea what this even is, but
I love masks, so what the heck)
Murad Fruit Enzyme Mask
From Saks:
YSL Luxurious Mascara in high density black
YSL Calligraphy Coffret (can't resist eyeliner sets)

Oh my gosh, you bought a house! Congratulations again Laurie! It sounds
absolutely adorable, and you were lucky to have the inside track....good for
you!
You'll have to get some pictures up so we can see the house, ring, and a
picture of the lucky guy!

Sounds like the entire family had a successful shopping trip, Audrey. Hoping
I can see the coral necklace at some point. And Sur Le Table is such a fun
store, I bought my SIL a gift card for that store for she loves to shop there.

Over the last several days (not counting the several gifts for others)...
From Nordstrom in SF this weekend:
*the most adorable medium cool toned pink princess wool coat with black and
white polkadot lining inside. I found it on sale for only $60!! It looks
like a $300+ coat. It's a steal. Are you listening cofarb? :)
Today from a local boutique:
*a really pretty sparkly pink and champagne colored long scarf with silver
tinsel type thread. Great for the holidays.
Last, but definitely not least: last Monday my fiance (when he was still my
boyfriend, hehe) and I bought a house!!!!! It's so cute and a real steal.
His brother is a realtor so we got lucky with the "win" since it came from
another realtor in his company who immediately wanted to sell her house
since she just got something in another place she wanted to move to. The
house was just updated with very stylish features like a gorgeous carpet and
very nice colored walls (one wall is red!). If it did go on the market, it
would have sold so fast we wouldn't have even had time to walk through it.
It's a two story with the living room, dining room, kitchen (all these blend
together with no doors connecting) and half bathrom on the first floor.
(The backyard is all fenced and perfect for a dog to run around.) The
second floor has three bedrooms and two bathrooms. One is a master bedroom
with attached bathroom, the middle room will be a study room (though it has
a closet since it was originally designed as a bedroom) and the third
bedroom will be like a guest bedroom as far as I know. Luckily there is a
lot of closet space for all of my clothes, purses and shoes! Hehe. It's
the perfect house for us...not too large or too small. I can't wait to move
in mid January and I also can't wait to go shopping for furniture and home
decorating stuff like from Tar–jay!

San Francisco is beautiful this time of the year. The sky is crystal
clear and the stores have wonderful holiday decorations. On Tuesday we
had lunch at the Metreon and saw the exhibits at the SFMOMA. At the
museum gift store I bought a pair of yellow green button earrings. The
designer is from France. Then we went to Union Square to see the
decorations and shop. At Gumps DH bought me two beautiful candles, one
is balsam and the other is lavender rosemary. I bought SMN shaving
cream and soap.for my son. I could have spent a very long time in Gumps
but instead we went to NM and then to Macys. NM has lots of beautiful
handbags marked down. After Macys we split up. The two older children
went with my husband and apparently bought some suprises at
Anthropologie. The youngest child accompanied me to Saks. I bought
Armani pressed powder #3. The MA touched up my makeup and suggested the
new precision liquid concealer. Since I still have an almost new
concealer I put it on my wish list for another trip. From Saks we
walked back to our hotel which was near the Embarcadero. We stopped at
Brooks Brothers where I bought a pink tie with navy squares for DH. It
will look good with his pink shirt. Yes, Carol, your thread inspired
me. We then went to Ralph Lauren. My daughter bought a beautiful
yellow v neck cotton sweater that was on sale. Our last stop was at one
of the jewelry vendors. I purchased three coral necklaces so my
daughters and I will have new costume jewelry for the new year. Dinner
at the Slanted Door was exceptional.
This morning we went to the ferry building and stocked up on provisions
to bring home. At Sur le Table we bought a digital scale, extra wide
spatula and cast iron skillet and ordered a Sashimi knife. Other
necessities included a variety of sausages, golden beets, fingerling
potatoes and Scharfenberger chocolate. We then drove to Nordstrom to
finish our holiday shopping. The girls found great handbags marked down
significantly. One is a red moc croc clutch with a big bow in the front
(possibly Isabella Fiore) and the other is a turquoise Cole Haan. I may
do a time share for the turquoise one. DH bought a pair of black casual
shoes. At Origins he treated us to foot care sets. I think our feet
really need them. It was a very long slow walk from the museum to the
hotel yesterday and my feet are still sore.
This ends our holiday shopping for 2004. Tomorrow I have to work on
menus for the rest of the week.

You sure packed a lot into a short visit and it all sounds wonderful! The
turquoise Cole Haan is my favorite –– turquoise anything just makes me feel
good.
I am taking a vacation day today and hope to find a few last minute
Christmas gifts –– I don't need to find any, but a couple extra fun things
would be nice. Other than that, my day will consist of having breakfast
with a bunch of girlfriends at the cafe at the local small airport, cleaning
up the dining room where all the wrapping, gift storage, and general
Christmas clutter has been, and grocery shopping for my contributions to
Christmas dinner at my brother's house, our own Christmas Eve dinner (Trilby
has inspired me to think about it a little more), and general grocery stuff.
DH is spending Christmas Eve afternoon making his fabulous chicken escarole
soup, a huge batch which he will share by giving some as Christmas gifts to
a few of his favorite people.
Enjoy the day!
