what I bought today (long)

"Stevie" <privilegemagaz...@charter.net>
EEEEK. if you aren't wanting to hear about holiday shopping or burning a
hole in a credit card, skip this post!
The SO and I have been on a decorating binge. Tired of living in the white
box finally, we are starting to paint, have ordered tile (spanish decos in
five patterns, faux saltillo tile, bathroom tile for 3 baths ––one is a
complete overhaul .. or actually a beginning since it wasn't done at all––
plus kitchen stuff including the phone inset. don't forget the steps up to
the door and stucco around the door too plus inside stair case and ripping
out the hardwood in the kitchen to put in travertine stone.
from there, we went off to South Coast Plaza for me to do a return on an
early Xmas gift that has to go overseas, a personal shop (for another
person) and then maybe to scout out the Nordies sale. Knowing that there is
also a Coach store, jewelry stores and also a JCrew store there plus a Macys
( I have $150 in gc's plus a 50 dollar return credit)
anyway we walk through Macys, spot the bags. look for about 20 seconds and
move on to lunch. After lunch I run down to Sephora and do an exchange and
pick up 1/4 of the personal shopper order.
We meet a Lorac MA that my SO knows (he's a photographer) and so I handed
her my biz card and asked her to call me!
went upstairs to JCrew and went through there. beautiful stuff but some of
it is way too much money for what it is. I spotted that lovely cashmere
hoodie that Susan in LA got but they only had it in 2 colors (rain aka aqua
and lapis aka periwinkle. ehhhh. not thrilled) look at other stuff but I
know it's overpriced ( I scored a black lace skirt just like the JCrew one
on Ebay and it was a THEORY skirt.. and I got it for about 50 . so no dice
on JCrew)
Did have the SO scope out sweaters for him. He hates scratchy sweaters and
so he took a look at the cashmere and liked the navy (check!) and also the
super soft merino wool in red (check again!) so I decided to do some online
shopping later (done! it's on its way)
from there we went straight to Nordstrom and we went through the
contemporary section... was not finding the cashmere hoodie that I had seen
2 weeks ago with the tattoo design (sigh) went over to wherever Caslon is
sold.. found a cute washable suede jacket on sale
http://tinyurl.com/43cat
a Deal on the price.. under 60 and it's more body conscious than it looks.
Tried the PP and it was just a touch tight in the shoulder and upper
arm/bicep. The fit was terrific otherwise. Went to the PS to get the fit
correct there and I can get the jacket tailored for that price!
Bought the chestnut which is much more grey than they show. It's more a
taupey brown. Pretty! My SO liked it
Ran into a nice SA and she showed me a cool cashmere sweater too––sort of
like this
http://tinyurl.com/55xoo
but not quite. Plus it wasn't that much money either! Got it in a raspberry
color. I didn't try it on but it was the same mgf as the one I got 2 weeks
ago so I was happy with a small.
moved on to brass plum to see about stuff for the kid.. found lots to look
at. some very inappropriate for her age group but cute nonetheless. I think
I need to take her back because it's hard to know about color (odd shades
of mauve, pink and green solids) if she would wear them. I have lots stashed
for her but she needs more sweater and holiday clothes now.. She needs a
pair of light colored pants too. grey or tan would be great. anyway got her
a two piece cami set in a richer pink with a sequined flower on the
shoulder (she will dig that)
got her a sweater like this in black
http://tinyurl.com/4hyme
plus another top that's sort of slipped my mind by now.
took all that back down to the person with the suede jacket and sweater and
rang up about 250 dollars but not bad for 5 pieces!
then I walked back over to find those tattoo sweaters and they had a total
of 3 left.. JUST three. 2 v necks in black with the bleeding heart print and
one hoodie.
I looked at the v necks and both were mediums.. the hoodie was a small (yay)
but the price tag was a bit daunting. I tried it on. It's cute. It's me but
I was freaking over the price. The one I had seen before was a green ground
cashmere with the tattoos on the sleeves and the back. This had a black
ground. The SO was willing to buy and he said I could hunt out the green
one. But I was still waffling around. Finally he said to just buy it.. we
did and when we walked away, It's so cool. sometimes I guess you just have
to buy something you love. I went back 2x and I remembered exactly what it
looked like and I guess it was really love .. (of a sweater..?)
So we went back downstairs to cosmetics to finish out the personal shopper
stuff (3 mascaras from prescriptives) and then we left!!
walked through macys with about 6 bags (lots of gift boxes!!) and tossed it
into the trunk. By then there was lots of traffic but we made it back just
in time to pick up the kid from school and buy her some pizza as she was
starving. (she's always starving!)
found the barstools I need for the bar in the first floor but I found out
the price too. If I want leather they start at 1200. (faint); if I want
fabric, they start at 1000 (still faint!) that's more than I want to spend
on a single barstool (a set of 4 is ok. even 2 k is ok but not EACH for the
bottom rung)
Oh yeah, did get 3 pieces of furniture reupholstered with fabric for under
700 dollars. That was good shopping! 2 of the 3 fabrics were on sale!
Total cost including foam was just about 725... for 3 pieces chair, rocker
and parson's bench cushion.
( so for those of you who have been to my house, the walls will be a
different color downstairs; the downstairs bathroom will be very different!
all tile and new vanity with sink. The stairs will be different inside and
outside... so that's a plus. think major cosmetic changes being done!
that's my day!

this is a special porcelain tile that's not really saltillo, has more tooth
than saltillo (better for wet areas, not so slippery) and it's sealed! I
have a travertine like one in my bath and our appraiser who was out here
recently about popped his eyes when he thought we had put travertine stone
in the bathroom (as in money to burn thoughts) I explained that we were
very picky about what we used and travertine was in the entry but I wasn't
using travertine in a bathroom (not next to a jacuzzi tub thank you very
much. too slippery)
This has more varigations; less efflorescence ( try none), and it's
available in more sizes and it's porcelain so it's stronger. Less
maitenance!

What a fun time! I have two washable suede jackets and I love them because
they are warm and hold up well. I like the more top–like piece you got so
will check that out. The cashmere V–neck is a lot like the merino BR sweater
I got and I love this style/shape. I think you'll wear the sweater a lot,
weather permitting of course ;)
Have fun re–doing your house! I'm going to do my floor and some things in
the kitchen, hopefully soon.

We had a fabulous shopping trip in Los Angeles on Saturday. Stayed at
the Holiday Inn Brentwood with the breathtaking view of the 405 but
you can't hear the cars and at $109 a night, it has to be the least
expensive hotel in the area.
We began our day with DD at Nordstrom Westside Pavillion. We had
horrible service in the downstairs shoe dept. (don't tell us who
doesn't make our size) but faired better upstairs at the salon. DD
selected Facconable pointed toe black flats with a bow in the front
and I ordered a pair of SW dress shoes, buttonhole. From there I went
to find Jag jeans and she looked at sweaters. She bought a grass
green v neck thin cableknit and I bought two pairs of Jags Christy,
loden green and blue denim in the Christy style Laurie B and Randee
suggested. When she was at the opposite end of the floor I also
purchased bright green Michael Stars tops for her and her sister,3/4
sleeves and ruching on the side. We went to the men's dept. where I
purchased DH a long sleeve black and goldenrod check shirt by
Bugatchi.
We continued on to Beverly Hills. DH read on a bench behind Saks and
admired the parade of valeted cars. At Saks I purchased the Armani
satin retouch #3 and luminous silk foundation 5.5 My old ones were
bought in June so I'll keep these until needed. I also bought an
Armani shadow, #44, a shimmery brown. The Armani SAs were less than
helpful but the one across the way at Scott Barnes was a doll. DD
bought a Scott Barnes gloss. At YSL DD fell in love with the #2 Lisse
gloss shine flash and the shine flash shadow duo, gifts for her
birthday.
After Saks we had fun at Barneys. I bought my son a charcoal long
sleeve tee with inside out stitching. DD and I persused makeup,
jewelry, clothes etc. and then we went to Senna where I picked up a
new camel shadow for my brows.
The last stop was NM. We met DH at the upstairs bar, sipped sparkling
Vossa and stared at the studs behind the counter (DH skipped the
staring part). DH left to read more and I had time to buy him a
beautiful tie made exclusively for NM by Zegna. Downstairs I
purchased Mariebelle hot chocolate and Godiva biscuits for part of
DH's administrative assistant's gift this year. NM in Beverly Hills
is so much fun for handbag perusal. Also the new Shu counters really
call out for customers to purchase their skincare. I ordered my other
daughter a Chantecaille pyrite shadow (this was the fifth store out of
it and at least I won't pay shipping) and we called it a day.
Dinner was at Prego.

I've always wondered about priceline.com. When I'm going to NYC, I can
usually find good deals as long as I plan my trip a couple of months in
advance. If I plan only a few weeks before trips, I'm stuck with
$200/night and up and I'm not too keen on spending a lot of money on a
hotel unless I plan to spend a lot of time in it. I leave first thing in
the morning and usually don't get back until at least 11 pm. All I need
is a safe place and a clean bed. OTOH, I'm even less keen on paying for
a three day stay in a hotel unless I know where it is before I'm stuck
with it. There are no options and no refunds on priceline.com.

Even after you have a res held by cc through whatever vehicle, call the
hotels you like directly (the local number) a couple days before the trip
and ask then what they can do for you. That close to arrival they know
better what their occupancy will be and if it's lowish they will drop the
rate to fill more of the property. (Although not certain you will have great
luck in SF in December but you NEVER know.)

I am 5'7" and most likely old enough to be your mother so they
probably are not right for you. There is stretch and the Sydney is a

Based on your recommendation, my friend and I tried on Jag jeans today during

did score another fun pair in the same department with vertical seams on the

I was pretty thrilled that JAG came in Xlong, though, and they were plenty long

That's a much better deal than the $120 I spent on my Blue Cults (and
that was 20% off –– but oh boy, do they make my butt look, well, present).
The best jeans deals I ever scored were on two pairs of Miss Sixtys. I

I need to whine a little to people who will understand :–). A few
weeks ago I bought 4 pairs of pants at Express on sale –– gorgeous
colors, great fit. But of course they were too long, so I took them
to my tailors –– a little shop in an old house on a main road near
here. I got a call from them this morning: Late last night a truck
with a drunk driver drove into their building, taking out the corner
with the sewing machine, with my 4 pairs of pants laid out ready to
work on the next morning. They will claim this on their insurance and
reimburse me, and of course it's ridiculous to complain when I just
lost some pants and they lost a big hunk of their store, but I do feel
kinda sad. I really did like those pants! I know there's little
chance I can find them at Express now (or on the weekend, which is the
soonest I could get there), since they were a sale item and they
probably didn't have more in my size even then. Oh well.. there are
always more shopping opportunities!

That's a much better deal than the $120 I spent on my Blue Cults (and
that was 20% off –– but oh boy, do they make my butt look, well, present).
The best jeans deals I ever scored were on two pairs of Miss Sixtys. I
bought one pair in Bordeaux and the other in Paris and paid about $50 for
each.

girl, get thee out to LA for a visit and let us take you to a planetlulu
sale. or register online for a planetlulu.com online sale! these babies run
about 60–70 bucks. also I got to Loehmans and score jeans for a fraction––
like at least about 40% off.
also check ebay. if you know your size and style, voila. instant or almost
instant gratification.
i have bought some great jeans recently.. Joes' for one and love the
brand.
AG is great but Karen was right, I bought these too large PLUS the AG
designer left the brand

I've noticed that the more expensive brands of jeans –– which I've
seen only online and at Loehmann's –– seem to come in a different sort
of size range –– numbers in the 20s. I don't know how these map to
more conventional sizes like 6 and 8 and such. Are they waist
measurements? If so, what would be the typical waist/hip ratio? What
is the reason for this different sizing?

I've just recently noticed that as well. I am also clueless on this new sizing
and would like to know how it relates to a 6 or an 8 for instance.

It's not 100% accurate for my case but it's close. YMMV.
Wow, thanks – that is most helpful. I have copied to take with me shopping
tomorrow as I attempt to find new jeans for Florida.
I never cease to be amazed at the helpful information available on alt.fashion.

Thanks Robyn – that is just what I needed to know. I have made a mental note

Thanks! I'm a 6–8, so it looks like I'd want to look in the 28–30
range. I'll have to try some of these!

I'm glad you asked this because I was wondering the same thing. I wear a 6
or 8 in misses, and a 7 in juniors, and I've noticed that I wear anywhere
from a 27 to a 30 in these new jeans sizes.
I know it's not unusual to vary from designer to designer. But in Joe's
Jeans, I have a size 28 that is just slightly too big, and another size 28
that I can't even get past my thighs!
