What arrived from Zappos today

"Madolyn" <madolyn_cl...@***no***hotmail.com***spam***>
These Indigo by Clarks "Gulf" black suede clogs: http://tinyurl.com/4cu75
They are even cuter in person –– it's not so obvious in the photo, but
there's a strip of brown piping along the edge of the upper. The sole is
kind of spongy, so they're very comfortable. Since my foot is narrow,
though, I'm going to put an insert on the instep for a more snug fit (clogs
are usually hard to fit on my foot). But these are a keeper!
And as usual, a flawless transaction with Zappos –– I ordered them on
Tuesday, and they arrived via free UPS 2–day today.

Very cute. Definitely not the Clarks of my day, though I do miss my desert
boots. I have a love–hate relationship with Zappos. I love ordering from
them. I hate that I can't resist doing it so often. They are espcially
good for people who wear hard–to–find sizes. I wear a 5 or 5 1/2 and stores
never seem to have my size, but Zappos... Gotta love 'em.

Are desert boots no longer produced? I swear I've seen some recently –– or
maybe it was walabees <sp?> –– I believe in the men's section of my favorite
B&M shoe stores here.
I agree that Clarks is definitely putting out more stylish shoes, especially
in this "Indigo" line. Although there are still plenty of the classic
frumpy/clunky/clodhopper–style Clarks currently offered.

I noticed recently that my size (9 1/2) is becoming hard to find because it
seems to be popular –– which surprises me. I was at DSW last weekend, and
there were at least four styles that I wanted to try that were not available
any larger than size 8 or so.
Donna, I wore the same size as you do now when I was in the third grade!
But my feet stopped growing (until I had a child 20+ years later) in sixth
grade –– it wasn't pretty.

The US Army collected measurements and determined size mix they needed
during World War II.
Many manufacturers haven't updated what they produce from what the
Army came up with.
Now, I heard the latest whine: airlines have to buy more fuel because
of fat passengers. Really.

DSW is so hit or miss for me that I rarely go. "My" DSW recently moved to a
smaller store in the mall and the selection shrank. Most of the shoes are
boring work shoes and utilitarian boots. Practical but not fun for a
shoe–a–holic. Zappos.com and Shoes.com are the best. Nordstrom.com has a
huge selection and good sizes, too.
I looked for desert boots––the real ones––a couple of years ago. Clarks was
making them for men but not in small sizes. I may even have found them at
some point but the price was close to $100. In my experience, things that I
buy for nostalgia's sake are not worth big bucks like that.

Hey, that's my size!
I think that now that young women have grown taller (I was the
second–tallest girl in my high school of 1000, but I see young women
as tall as I am on the street every single day now) and they don't
have that weird "small feet = femininity" hangup that my mother's
generation had, and tried to pass down to me, 9.5 and 10 and even
larger sizes are selling like hotcakes.
Donna, I wore the same size as you do now when I was in the third grade!
I can beat you there––I wore a size 8.5 in third grade, and my feet
stopped growing between fifth and sixth grade (when I was 5'4").
Now I'm 5'9"––I grew an inch and a half in college, BTW, but
fortunately my feet really had stopped.

So have young men... they called my father "Shorty" because he was the
tallest kid in the high school (huh?) and I don't think of him as
being unusually tall.
