What to Wear, Want to Impress/Office Xmas Party

"I!" <i...@sympatico.ca>
O.k. if I ever needed your help, I do now. I really value your opinions.
I'm going to 2 office parties this Xmas. One is not yet defined/either on a
winter boat cruise or jazzy hotel and the other at a banquet hall.
I'm new at this workplace and absolutely want to make an awesome impression.
I want to look elegant/sexy/and not wear black if possible. I'm a size 6 and
pretty proportional. Should I go short, long, I don't like strapless
anything. Does that help? My colouring favours cool colours and I'm getting
my hair done a burgundy/auburn type colour by then.
Any sites catering to us Canadians would be helpful.
Thanks so much,
Livia

Okay, I have to say for an office party sexy is probably not the effect
you want to go for. Elegant yes. But tread carefully about the sexy
part. Sexy and office do not mix.
Can you give us a little more detail about the type of work you do and
your position within the company? I think that makes a difference.
For example, I dress differently for my DF's office parties than for my
own. He works in academia, so when we're invited to the stuffy parties
with tenured professors and department heads, I'll opt for something
conservative, such as dress pants with a cropped jacket with satin tie
in the front. When we attend his parties that are more for the younger
student crowd, I'll put on something more youthful that shows a little
more skin, like my little black dress.
For my office parties it's completely different. Since I'm in
management, I am sensitive to the image I want to project at these
parties. For example the CEO might invite us to his mansion, along with
the company investors and board of directors. For such an affair, I'll
go dressy but conservative. I have this perfect dress that is a
gorgeous shade of red, long sleeve, v–neck, empire waist with A–line
knee–length skirt. Since the skirt is A–line, it doesn't cling so it's
not too sexy. But the color is what's great – it makes me stand out,
and for December, red is particularly festive.

anything. Does that help? My colouring favours cool colours and I'm

I'm seeing you in emerald green, a hot color this year. I saw this
gorgeous cap sleeve dress:

If you're in management or aiming for it, I personally like this type
of look:
http://www.bloomingdales.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=40379&CategoryID=1141
Or instead of a dress, consider a cashmere sweater with festive skirt,
such as this; even though the skirt is more clingy than you might want
for an office party, I think it works because it's paired with the
sweater so not as formal or too revealing. Not to mention, for the boat
party, the sweater would keep you warm:
http://www.bloomingdales.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=40328&CategoryID=1141
If your office is really casual, you might want to ask around as to
whether the other women will be wearing dresses or not. If everyone
seems to be opting for pants instead, what about something like this:
http://www.bloomingdales.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=32318&CategoryID=1141
I only checked bloomies because they seem to be the only store that is
showing a wide range of holiday wear this early, but you get the idea.
Oh – and if you go with a dress, consider this coat to go over it. I
think this coat is fabulous:

I'm looking for this type of coat, above the knee but not short, clearly for
evening, something that would go over lots of things (from long dresses to
silky trouser outfits). I don't want to spend $350 on it, since I'll only
wear it three or four times a year. Has anyone seen an everning coat that
is less money but meets these requirements?
TIA,
Smokey

Where are you located in Canada? Do you have a Tristan near you? Their
Holiday collection is out:

as usual, they are showing lots of black, red and white.
Jen's examples all looked great!!

I am the biggest fan of buying dress coats either on ebay or at thrift
shops. A large Salvation Army or other thrift shop is likely to offer
virtually unworn dress coats in wool and cashmere for unbelievably low
prices. (I'm talking $10 or so for a gorgeous coat.) People tend to buy
these things and save them for special occasions. They get rid of them (or
die) without wearing them very much, while parkas and other more
practical/washable coats get worn to death.
Although it can get a little competitive on ebay for flawless vintage
cashmere, there are still lots of great deals to be had, especially if you
don't mind having bracelet length sleeves. Often they have very decorative
buttons which may be a turnoff for someone who is looking for an everyday
coat, but a real plus to someone searchng for something special. Even if
you figure in the cost of drycleaning or shortening, these coats can be a
great deal.

when she's home alone!

Jen, first off, your help was absolutely amazing! Thank you so much.
To answer your questions, our office not that conservative (the associates)
but we're in finance/investment/communications. I guess what I meant by sexy
was not what everyone else means – I'm a little more of the sexy but covered
up type. I don't go strapless, bare a lot of skin, or wear anything too
short naturally. I guess I really should have said elegant but young.
Well, I'm off to ponder your selections. I love the emerald green choice. I
think that's perfect. I'll let you know what I come up with.
Again,
Thanks so much!
