What I passed up today at the thrift store...opinions wanted!

m...@aol.com (Melanie)
Today I ran into the local thrift store when I had a few minutes to kill.
Spied a large black tote in the case and asked about it. I don't know if I
made a smart decision or passed up the steal of a lifetime...you be the judge:
It's a big, slightly unstructured black tote with long handles, open at the top
but deep enough that a wallet, etc. would be pretty secure. Also one nice
deep zippered pocket inside. Zipper pull looks like good quality with some
sort of pattern (not intials) imprinted on the zipper pull.
It's made of a woven black material––not leather but heavier than
straw...almost more like a twine or something?? (is this possible?), in a
fairly tight weave. It's fully lined. The top of the bag is edged with a
black material which I presume is leather. The handles are the same material.
This edging goes down a good four inches wide all around the top of the bag.
This edging is imprinted with the designer: Bottega Veneta. It's embossed on
the leather in big tall letters. I generally am not a fan of things like that
but it's not colored lettering or anything, so it's not terribly garish (like
the Polo Ralph Lauren bags or Hilfiger stuff I see everywhere).
Price is $75 but will be 20% off through October. It shows no signs of wear.
Is this a good deal? I know BV is normally quite expensive, but the BV bags
I've seen are all leather. Is BV, do you think, heavily counterfeited, and
does anyone know what I could look for to see if it is authentic? I looked
all over Ebay but didn't see anything even close to this style. I can always
use a good big black tote but if this is a fake I can get one for far less than
what they're asking. But if it's authentic, I'm sure the quality is better
than what I could buy elsewhere.
I had to leave without time to decide on the, and they said they'd hold it
until they closed at 7. I know it'll very likely be there in the morning, so I
could still go grab it if it's an amazing deal. I do tend to put my purse down
all over the place and I think a woven material like that could a) show signs
of wear and fray quite quickly and b) be sort of out of place in colder
weather, but I think it's easier to wear a big black bag at this time of the
year than in summer.
Opinions?

This is a tough one. I don't know if BV bags ever come in different
materials. I've been to BV stores in Italy and have only seen leather
handbags but that doesn't mean they aren't made. I think your concerns
about the tote showing signs of wear and fraying should outweigh the
fact that it might be a good price for a designer bag.

Is this the kind of material the bag was made of?

I knew I had seen something similar in a BV bag but I wasn't sure if this is
what you looked at. If so, then ues BV does make something different than
leather it's woven cavas

You're close, but nope...I think the material was more like this bag, which I
own: http://tinyurl.com/3uxub
I'm not affiliated, etc...just was lucky enough to find a pic on ebay. The
style is totally different as the BV bag is a large rectangular tote. The RL
bag looks like it has some shape to it but it actually takes on more of a
slouchy, hobo style as soon as you put anything in it. I think the BV bag had
slightly better construction and was a bit stiffer, but the material and weave
are the same as the RL bag.
Thanks for the help, though!

Isn't that one leather ? Your first link must be the fabric Melanie saw.
It looks really nice from the photo and probably will be durable.

Is it like nylon rope, but smooth/silky? It sounds like the same material
as The Sak purses. I have one that I used for a month backpacking in
Europe, and it shows no wear. The material is extremely durable, but I
think that it'd be very hard to clean if you set it in liquid or something
sticky.

Nope, I could swear it's a woven straw like the RL bag (see my other post in
this thread for a picture)...it sure felt like that to me. I'm going to try to
go back and look at it on Saturday if I have time. I have a The Sak and it is
quite durable. The weave of the BV bag was slightly looser than the The Sak
bags I've seen.

Wouldn't the easiest (and surest) way to find out whether the bag is
authentic or not be to email BV customer service, describe the bag,
and let them tell you whether they ever manufactured a bag like that?
Just an idea.
