Men: Button *all* buttons?

Paul R <195pros...@195earthlink.com>
OK, I married a "clothes horse" or whatever is the term nowadays for
someone with too many clothes. In this case is my husband, who, at last
count, had 22 suits –– just suits –– never mind how many sports jackets
he has. I can't keep up. That's just 10 or 17 too many, in my
opinion...Anyway, I discovered this nsg and have a question, granted my
naivete:
Are men supposed to button the bottom button of a vest or 3–button
jacket/sport coat? He doesn't and I keep telling him he ought to do so,
otherwise why do they put that bottom button on in the first place? He
just grins –– and leaves the bottom button undone.
Just what is the story? The first time I commented on it, he mentioned
something about the garment pulling or gathering up whenever he sits and
has the bottom button fastened, so he leaves the bottom one undone. Is
this right or is it just his own weird peculiarity? He does wear them
well and looks great in his clothes. It's just that annoying bottom
button...

Diana,
He's right. On a 3–button jacket only the center button is buttoned, and on a
2–button jacket only the top button. The reason these are the only buttons
buttoned, is because it conveys––ostensibly––an air of studied nonchalance,
what the French call dègagé.
Now you know.

Carson's Kresley's rule of thumb for a 3 button suit – starting from the top
button – "sometimes, always, never". Meaning sometimes button the top,
always button the middle, never button the bottom.

I recall reading many many MANY years ago that King Edward VII started
this tradition. All men used to wear their jackets with all buttons
buttoned. But as Edward grew larger and larger he started unbuttoning
that offending lower button to relieve presser on his stomach. People
were a little bit surprised by this shocking gesture, but figured if
the king did it, then who were they to question the action? It caught
on rather quickly and has been the standard ever since.
