Suede shoe care

X Offender <nospample...@earthlink.net>
I just bought a pair of Marc by Marc Jacobs red suede shoes. These, to
be exact: http://tinyurl.com/3mx98. I haven't owned suede shoes in many
years, and I want to take good care of these, as they were not cheap. Is
there some kind of protective product with which I should treat them
before wearing them, or should I just leave them as is? I don't want to
use anything that might affect the color or texture. Please tell me what
to do!

There are leather protector sprays made specifically for suede. I can't
really vouch for their effectiveness; suede is still harder to keep clean
than smooth leather finishes. However, a good spray will protect against
water spots and *may* make it easier to brush off grime. I would look at a
good shoe store (though I almost always buy my leather care products at
places like Walmart). Remember to make sure that it is recommended for
suede finishes.

I bought a pair of Easy Spirit blue nubuck shoes this week–end and
bought a can of Kiwi Suede & Nubuck Protector at Wally World for
$3.97. I followed the directions on the can and water just rolls off
my new shoes like water off a ducks back! I would also recommend
getting a suede brush for your new shoes. It fluffs the nap back up
and gets rid of any dust or grit that you may have picked up. Seems
like they used to say to use the brush in a circular motion, but don't
know if that's the correct usage these days.

Note that silicone based sprays will do a great job of making your shoes
water proof/resistant, but it will cause the color to darken.

Color change is what mainly concerns me. If the color darkened
uniformly, I wouldn't mind too much, but if it became uneven, that would
be bad. I'm not sure I want to risk it. If the shoes were a dark color,
I wouldn't worry, but that red is more susceptible to getting messed up.
Thank you to everyone for the advice.

Also get a suede shoe/coat brush with little rubber bumps on it and use
it every time you wear your shoes and suede clothing!
