Most of the advice I've read says to choose eyeglass frames that are the
opposite shape of the face shape (e.g. square frames for a round face, round
or oval shape for an angular face). I'm sure it's very much a YMMV
situation, but I find that this pairing is very distracting and emphasizes
the eyeglasses. I met with a couple of people recently, both with round
faces and features and they were sporting square frames. All I could see
were the eyeglass frames. Mind you, the frames were thin coloured metal, so
perhaps it's the colour that made them stand out. Any opinions?

I still agree with the conventional advice. I have a stereotypical round
face, and round frames make me look like a hippie a la John Lennon.
[shudders at the memory of her huge round '80s eyeglasses] My current
eyeglass frames are almondshaped on top, the bottom half of a wide hexagon
on bottom.
