Avon – shop the sales. Hair care stuff often goes on sale for $1.99,
and their skin care products are generally under $10, with some of the
higher–end lines being an exception. There are different lines for dry,
normal, oily/combo, and sensitive skin.

I just started using Real Simple from Walmart, and am finding it pretty
good. I used to only use high end department store products but have been
trying to spend less.

Um, Paula's Choice. Her products tend to be inexpensive and generally
effective. They do what they say they do. http://www.paulaschoice.com

Evelyn, you brought up one of my favorite subjects!
I concur also with the Simple line from Walmart. Great stuff. I
posted a rave a couple of days ago about the Radiance Booster. Since
I started using it, I require less foundation for a "perfect skin"
look, and I have gotten three different compliments on my complexion!
For conditioners and shampoos, I recommend a visit or two to Sally
Beauty. Salon quality at a fraction of the "designer" price. Same
goes for the styling products. If you want styling products from a
Walmart or Target, I love Thermasilk and Garnier Fructis.
As for lotions, well, I love the lower end stuff. Palmer's Shea
Butter is a favorite, and you can usually find a "40% more free!"
bottle or two at the Walmart. I am also obsessed with Tree Hut shea
butter and brazil nut butter tubs. These, too, can be found at
Walmart. They are very cheap (under five dollars), very moisturizing,
very delicious smelling, and very economical...a little goes a long
way.
Another set of lotions I am loving lately are the Suave lotions in the
BBW–esque scents. I have the Sweet Pea lotion in a huge bottle, three
bucks, and it smells every bit as good as the BBW version. I like the
consistency of the lotion better than BBW, too. They have other
yummies, too: Cucumber Melon (a BBW clone), Toasted Coconut, something
with Sugar in the title, Raspberry (deeeeelish), and Lavender (the
best lavender I have smelled in a long time...a true lavender, not
overpowered with accompanying floral notes).
Here's a product I adore that smells and seems costly but really
isn't: Booth's Walnut Body Scrub. As far as I know, this is only
available at Target. For less than five dollars, you get a generous
bottle (16 ounces, I think) of the most incredible–smelling body scrub
I have ever taken a whiff of. What's more, it is a terrific scrub,
and again, a little goes a very long way. (If you're like me, you'll
spend five minutes in the shower just inhaling the scent!)
I love St. Ives medicated scrub for the face; some say that it is too
harsh but my skin really loves it. Another cheap secret I have found:
olive oil soap. I scored some really super cheap in a Corfu grocery
store last summer. Even if you buy the pricier Kiss My Face version
or something, if you take good care of your bar, like drying it after
every use, it should last and last. And your skin will thank you for
it.
I went from being all department store and higher–end products to all
drugstore after my layoff three years ago. You know what? My wallet
is fatter and I am happier! Buying products is so much more fun now!

second this rec. Whenever I breakout I always go back to her cleanser.

Actually, for those who don't live near a Target (mine's kind of far up
North and also there are two in Suburbia...) Booth's is now at Rite Aid. Saw
it there for the first time about two weeks ago and was a bit surprised.
Prior to that, I'd only seen it at Target and the occasional Fred Meyer.

If you have a Big Lots nearby, check it out. I find the best shower gels,
soaps, lotions and even facial cleansers there. Marshall's and TJ Maxx can
be good too.

Hi all,
Thanks for the many tips.
However I stay in th U.K. So we do not have Wallmart, Big Lots etc. I
have been to U. S> and love these shops though. However enough
suggestions for now.
I used to buy Clarins, Clinique etc but I have decided to cut down on
spending.

I have to say that I don't like any hair care products as much as salon ones
(I tend to get waayyyy too much volume from the store bought ones and wind
up using more styling products to flatten it down, but the Health store ones
aren't as bad or as volumizing on me...), but I like L'oreal, Clean and
Clear, Olay, Dove, Burt's Bees etc. skin care and a few other lines that
aren't outrageously expensive. (I also like some more expensive European and
Domestic ones like Dr. Haushka, Aveda, Estee Lauder, and Anne Marie
Borlind, however...)
It's rare that a skin care line bothers me or doesn't work well for me,
though. I've even used skin care for babies and it's worked fine on me. The
only thing that ever bothers my skin on my face and neck is winter weather
and turning up the heat. I just have to moisturize more. The only time a
skin care line made my skin feel *too* tight or dry was when I used Almay. I
like their makeup, but their skin care made me feel unmoisturized, tight,
and stripped. Still looked clean and good, though, just felt tight as
Hell...

J/A/S/O/N line of shampoos and conditioners. No SLSs, and you get a decent
sized (16/+oz, IIRC) bottle for US$7/–.
Ocean Potion sunscreens for the face and body.
Asian drugstore skincare. I'm amazed that Asian drugstore skincare actually
works better for my Asian skin. I thought that it was just marketing, but
my plastic surgeon confirmed that skincare developed/tested for your
specific ethnic group frequently does make a difference.
Olay or Eucerin sunscreen for my neck.
Suave body lotions/washes and shampoos/conditioners.
L'oreal haircare and skincare. I tend to like L'oreal overall.
Burt's bees lipbalm for chapped lips and skin.
Aspirin mask!
Queen Helene mint julep mask.

I think most of the Nature's Gate and Jason shamps and conditioners are
great, but I have to say that the Hemp one from Jason is flat out
ridiculous. It makes my hair *SOOOOOOO* poofy and huge. I couldn't belive
it. I've tried it a few times and no matter how long or how recently I've
had a haircut, it makes my hair all poofed out like an afro. It is awful and
it smells funky, too, but their other shampoos don't do that to me and the
others smell pretty.

Check Big Lots for closeouts – right now, my branch has 50% off the
old Eckerd stock and am loading up on my fave Neutrogena shampoo.
Sally Beauty Supply carries the generic copycats of many hair itmes –
e.g. their answer to Sebastian 9 is about 4 or 5 bucks.
I buy Suave shampoo on sale and use it for handwashing of undies and I
bet it would do double duty as shower gel.

Let me add my recommendation for Paula's Choice. I use her
cleanser, toner, body wash and 1% BHA lotion and they all
work as advertised. The only real drawback is that you have
to order them online instead of picking something up at the
drugstore. On the other hand she often has free shipping
offers (usually over holidays) so you can get them shipped
free.

At any rate, can anyone give any Kose drugstore line recommendations?
My regular skincare is Kose. I use the Cosmeport Moisture Mild line.
My skin tends to be dehydrated with a little shine in my T–zone.
I use the Milk Lotion (I love the milk lotions as I find creams to be
too heavy) and the matching toner. There are two toner versions, M
(Moisture) and L (Refresh). I usually use the M during the winter
when my tends to be a little more parched.
I also use the Moisture Mild White Pure Essence C, this stuff is
fabulous! It has done more to improve my skin texture than anything
else I've tried. It's like a thick lotion, comes in a small blue tube
and the price is certainly right, about eleven bucks. I use this at
night.
Another must–have for me is the Cosmeport Purity Skin Lotion C. This
*looks* like just water, but it's also a Vitamin C product that comes
in a non–aerosol pump. I use it on my face before applying makeup or
moisturizer. It's also a great spritz in dry air conditions. (We run
a/c or the heat for almost all of the year, so I use it frequently.)
Keeps my skin very smooth, and I tend to have a bit of roughness on
the apples of my cheeks unless I'm careful. Haven't had that problem
since using the two C products.
I've used other Kose White products but found them a little strong for
my skin. If you like a heavier moisturizer, the cream in the small
jar would be good. The White pack (masque) was also a little strong.
You also might want to try some of the Biore stuff: cleansing sheets
(the Japanese ones only, the American–market ones I tried suck),
Triple Mint Face Wash (this feels *so* good and gets all makeup
residue off without leaving my face all dried out) and grapefruit body
wash are some of my favorites.
If you have a problem with dry skin on your lips, try the Shiseido FT
lip care – I use the Water In Lip stuff, it's a little sticky but it
works pretty much overnight for me. No flavor, which for me is a
plus. (I'm still reeling from the WANT A HAWAIIAN PUNCH?!?!? flavor
of the Dessert Beauty lip gloss sample that came from Sephora the
other day.) :)

"Asian drugstore skincare" = skincare that I find in drugstores in Asia.
Keep in mind that Japanese drugstores are frequently entire stores dedicated
to shampoo/skincare/makeup et al –– truly a.f nirvana –– that carry higher
end stuff as well. ;D
My favorite items (so far) are:
– Shiseido Neo Anessa spf50 sunscreen
– Kanebo Alli spf50+ PA+++ sunscreen
– Kose Medicated Sekkisei lotion
– L'oreal plenitude white perfect whitening facial foam
– Omi brotherhood yuza lip balm
What didn't work for me:
– DHC virgin olive oil
– Cle de Peau concealer
I've got many other items sitting around, waiting to be tried. :p
