Wore patterned tights!

"cofarb" <do...@cofarb.com>
I finally wore a pair of patterned tights––black and white checked
design––yesterday. I wore them with a black above–the–knee length skirt,
black bodysuit and knee–high black boots. And a black leather coat that was
the same length as the skirt. And red knit gloves.
The reaction from a group of friends (none of whom give a rat's ass about
fashion) was "You're so dark" and assorted comments about my wearing all
black, in spite of the fact that there were several inches of very light
tights showing. I had been reluctant to break up the outfit with color.
I'm really short and even though I'm not heavy, I worry about the patterned
hose making my legs look chunky.
At first, I tried the outfit with my "punked Chanel" black & white
houndstooth cropped jacket but thought it was too busy to pair with the
houndstooth–y tights. Then I tried a cropped, fitted red leather jacket and
thought my "line" was too broken up by adding a color that separated top
from bottom...so I ended up apparently almost goth–like. (My hair is
shoulder length and very dark, too.)
Okay, so maybe I need to try to do it differently if I don't want to look
like Morticia, but what/how? I have to accomplish it within the confines of
the existing wardrobe so I won't be going out and buying an all–one–color
outfit...
Back to the drawing board.

I have several pairs of patterned tights and I find them fun to wear. I've
gotten the most positive comments when I wear them with longer skirts and
relatively simple shoes.
Pairing bold patterned tights with boots like you did is a great idea. Alas,
here in So Cal, that would be a little too warm, so I haven't had an occasion
to try it.
One suggestion that I found helpful is to match the "mood" of the tights to the
occasion. In other words, some hosiery patterns (small diamonds, for example)
looks very professional and works well with office wear looks. Other patterns,
usually more dramatic, look better with casual or evening wear.

Thanks for the suggestions. I was thinking of trying some of the patterned
tights with a short black jumper and medium–heeled maryjane type shoes so
that more of the pattern is visible. I also have a few pairs of gloriously
colored Wolford tights that I plan to use soon. As another a.f.er noted
yesterday, some boots wreck tights and I'd hate to destroy my limited
patterned and colored tights collection.
We've suddenly gone from summer to winter and it's only a matter of time
before boots will be the *only* intelligent footwear. Winter here is brutal
but boots (and the huge variety of coat–age) make it tolerable fashion–wise.

Too funny – last night before bed, I was bored and spent some time
doing a "try–on" and experimenting with possible outfits I could wear
with patterned tights. I must've been channeling your wavelength
yesterday!
One of the outfit combos I came up with that I liked a lot was a black
wool mini skirt, black v–neck sweater, patterned tights, with *either*
flat patent leather driving mocs (for a casual running around weekend
day) *or* burgandy croc pumps with just a bit of heel (1") for dressier
occasions. The outfit looked pulled together once I threw on a touch of
color at the neck in the form of a fuchsia scarf. I liked the idea of
a touch of fuchsia at the neck, with burgandy shoes at the feet.
Nothing to break up the line, but gave the whole dark outfit some zing.
I would use my leopard bag for this outfit to add some texture, and
the outfit worked nicely with my 3/4 pink coat.
I did try this on with boots, but it didn't work as well for me. I
think it's because the skirt is short. Boots look better to me with a
knee–length skirt – the line is less broken and then you'd only see a
hint of pattern. With flats or low heels, the pattern had an elongating
effect. With boots the pattern had the opposite effect. With the flat
black patent driving mocs, it gave the outfit a totally different feel
– more funky and casual – and if I wore my red frame secretary glasses
instead of my usual contacts, I think it would be perfect.
During my try–on I was also happy to discover a use for a BR
knee–length heathered white–ish wool skirt that my DF got me for xmas
two seasons ago and I've never once been able to find a way to wear it.
I discovered that all the muted colors and browns this year go
absolutely perfect with it! He'll be pleased to see me *finally* wear
it this year. I've decided the best combo is to wear it with the medium
blue ruffled cashmere v–neck from AT, a pair of burgandy boots, and
nude hose.

I've debated this this year too. Picked up my first pair of fishnets a few
months ago and haven't found the courage to wear them out. I'm not sure I'd
even know WHAT to wear them with.

I keep forgetting about my scarves. That would have been a perfect way to
break up the gloominess of the outfit without chopping my body in half
visually. Thanks for the reminder. (I have to figure out a way to display
my scarves so I remember to use them. I'm getting an idea... Off to the
laboratory! <G>

You can get up now, Heather. The patterned tights I wore? I have had them
for at least 4 years and yesterday was the first time I've worn them. Four
years!
I bought a pair of bright pink fishnets at the Wolford outlet a few weeks
ago and I'm wondering if/when I'll have the nerve. I may have the perfect
outfit (or two or three) but I'm afraid I'll look like a little kid who
wants to be a ballerina. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

The magazines show them with classic fall fabrics, tweed, boucle,
houndstooth. I wore some with tweed separates and mary jane pumps,
made the outfit less stuffy and more "with it". :–)

I can't tell you how much the mary jane pumps add to this season's wardrobe. I
would consider at least one pair a must have.
I have Prada, which has a thicker heel and they look and feel great. If you
walk a lot in your heels, these are the mary janes for you. That thicker heel
makes all the difference (almost a Louie heel, only not as drastic) on your
ankles at the end of the day.

Okay, okay. I have a couple pairs of high heeled maryjanes, including a
very old pair of Steve Maddens that are black leather with leather flower
appliques––very mod in a way though they are 1990s, not 1960s. Do I dare?

I wear tights all winter, so I decided to try patterned ones.
Today I wore a patterned pair I bought at Kohls. They are not very bold,
black with a paisley pattern "punched" in. I wore them with my black Dansko
closed back clogs. I plan to search for more interesting tights. I think
they'll be cheerful to wear when it's nasty and bitter and I am bored by the
relentless winter.

My opinion is that I can't imagine patterned tights looking good with anything
but boots and even then the visualization is difficult.
I give you credit for trying. Stick with the boots.
