Wearing tights with boots – problem with snags

sugarplum_...@hotmail.com (sugarplum_pdx)
Whenever I wear tights with boots (just below knee height), the tights
end up getting damaged by the boot rubbing against them in certain
spots. Mainly, it's right at the top of the boot where the zipper
closes. I end up getting these little snags and discolored areas on
the tights. And my boots are not especially tight around my calves or
anything. Does anyone else have this problem, and do you have a way to
prevent it? I don't want to spend money on tights (which can be very
expensive!) and end up ruining them after one wear.

I have this problem with several pairs of boots. I sort of divide my tights
into the "all effed up already so I may as well wear 'em with boots" pile
and the "not yet wrecked so save 'em for non–boots" pile. It's actually the
looser boots that are worse than the snug ones, and if I'm driving the right
leg gets the worst of it. And if I'm sitting, bored and fidgeting, the
snags are worse... Check to see if there is a particular spot that is
causing the snags. You may be able to cover a particularly rough seem with
some moleskin to minimize wear and tear on the tights.
Mostly, I just keep buying inexpensive tights whenever, wherever.
Marshall's can be great. Paw through the sale bins for the absolute best
prices.
When buying new boots, run your fingers over the places where they are
likely to cause snags. My highest quality boots––Kenneth Coles, iirc––are
very smooth and also quite snug so there isn't a lot of "play" or friction.
I wore them with tights today and noted, with pleasure, that the tights are
unscathed.
In other words: spend the money on the boots and buy cheap tights!

Same here but I haven't yet divided up my tights into the Cofarbian Tights
System––need to do this immediately! I, too, am tired of ruining my tights.
There doesn't seem any way around this problem, either.

my solution is to use my slightly–worn tights under boots, and if i find
there's one spot, like near a zipper pull, that is the snag culprit, i put a
band–aid or bit of adhesive moleskin over it. and i don't risk my expensive
tights with boots.

Moleskin is exactly what I use. You go through it pretty quickly, however.
Make sure you carry at least one "extra" with you in your purse while you're
out because you can lose it toward the end of the day/night.

Ugh, totally been there. What I've sometimes done is wear a thin sock
in addition to the tights, just below the level of the boot and
providing a buffer between tights and zipper. Hope this helps.

I've heard women complain about this problem as long as I've known women
who wear boots, and I don't understand why bootmakers don't simply sew a
flap that would cover the zipper, similar to the small flap that jackets
and dresses have to protect your skin from the zipper. I suppose its
possible the hosiery industry lobbies hard against this sort of thing, but
its a little hard to believe.
If they're nice boots and you plan to wear them for a couple of seasons,
what about having a cobble sew a small leather or fabric flap that would
cover the zipper or other rough edges?

That's not the only cause of the problem. <more explanation snipped>
...Back to the moleskin.
Oh well – just a suggestion. Sounds like you'll just have to lobby for
tougher tights. Maybe that could be a niche market for the hosiery industry
– they already make boot socks for men.

For a quick fix,why not try a small peace of duck–tape ?? It just

Where would I get adhesive moleskin?
in the drugstore, near all the dr. scholl–type products. it comes in sheets and
you cut it to size.

I'm glad someone posted about this because I have the same exact
problem.
I haven't found a solution for it yet. I thought of rubbing candle
wax over the inside of the zipper to ameliorate the problem but there
was no difference.
My "problem area" is right at the end of the zipper at the top. The
problem recurs whether the boots are short or knee high. My solution
so far has been––as described before––to use cheaper tights. It's one
wear and out.
IMO boots with no zipper are the only solution to this problem.
My boots are Gucci so IMO it's not about the brand/price.

My first thought when I read this thread was to cut a bit of moleskin
and place it on the inside of your boot, after you zip it up. I would
think that this would prevent snagging by covering the bit of the boot
that is sharp. Another cheaper idea would be to use a band aid over the
area that snags. This is all "in theory" because I've never worn tights
with boots, so I don't have this problem. Also, this wouldn't be a
permanent fix, as you would have to do it every time you wore the combo.
Just a thought....

That's not the only cause of the problem. It can be something as benign as
a loose thread end sticking out along a seam or a too–loose or too–tight
boot top. As I mentioned, when I sit a long time, I start to
fidget––swinging my leg a little or just moving my foot around in the boot,
and the friction wrecks the hose. Driving causes friction on the right leg,
too, as you push on the gas pedal... And I imagine that short–legged women
have more of a problem because the boot ends up rubbing against a part of
the leg that flexes.
In any case, even boots that are zipperless can cause the same problem; even
boots that I have which are made of a combination of stretchy fabric panels
and leather panels. Adding a leather or fabric flap would simply add more
edges which can potentially cause problems. Back to the moleskin.

You can get adhesive moleskin at a drugstore where Dr Scholl's and other
foot products are sold.
