OT: Please vote for my new bed (again)

stephanie <stepha...@keybeaute.com>
About a year ago I bought a white metal canopy bed online and I hated
it. Really. I tried every configuration and draped yards of fabric on it
but in the final analysis my daughter said it looked like a bassinet and
that was the end. Hence, here are three beds I'm looking at but I
didn't get the dominant designer gene and I'd be thrilled to get your
vote. My bedroom is huge – 18' x 18' with 10' windows. The bed will be
angled in a corner. Help! Please! Don't let me fail again! TIA.

My tastes leans toward English Country... my vote is for the Beacon Hill. It
is a very classic design with the wrought–iron look. (I have yet to find a
headboard I like. It has to be just right for reading in bed)
For a room that size, have you considered sleigh beds? They make a good
presence in a large bedroom.

As pretty as the wrought–iron choices are, I would be concerned that
*any* wrought–iron bed is not substantial enough for a room this size.
To me, a metal bed reflects light and looks dainty... perfect for a
small bedroom where you want to de–emphasize the bed.
Instead, I would go with a style that's more commanding and heavy, such
as the leather bed or a sleigh bed or perhaps something mammoth in
mahoganny. If your ceilings are also high, consider something with tall
posters or a bed you need to step up to get into, or something with a
very high back.
I think it also highly depends on the bedding you envision for the
room. To me wrought iron goes best with daintier florals, quilts, and
light patterns, which again might get lost in such a large room (unless
you intend to paint the walls a dark color?).
Anyway, I'd start by figuring out what sort of bedding you want in the
room. What color, style, etc. *Then* pick a bed that goes with that
bedding style.
Just MHO and perhaps I am not the best person to ask because I don't
really have a decorating gene either! However, in my last place I had
an enormous bedroom and it took me awhile to figure out that dark
bedding and dark wood bed worked best in the space. Anything too light
and dainty got completely lost.
Oh – and I did eventually figure out that angling the bed worked
fabulously in this large bedroom. You'll love the way it makes the room
look oh–so–much more dramatic! For extra drama, consider putting a
small table behind the bed with a large fern and some uplights....
Also, I found that angling gave me a lot of extra space behind the bed
to stash all sorts of stuff out–of–sight. Another thing to consider is
that if you go with a bed that has a wrought–iron headboard, you will
not be able to hide as much stuff behind it. Better IMHO to go with a
solid headboard.

When I read the dimensions of the room, sleigh bed occurred to me, too!
(Dear Bob, but Stickley makes a gorgeous one!) A solid wood headboard like
that will be better for reading than any of the metal tube configurations
though I prefer one of those "bed buddy" pillows with arms for serious
reading in bed.

I agree: a sleigh bed or four–poster in dark or light wood, depending on
the color of the rest of your bedroom furniture.

Back in the days when I sold furniture, I always recommend a panel style
headboard because otherwise your pillows may "fall through".
My vote is #1.

Of the three I like the second and third ones the best, and they look basically
alike to me with different finishes. For me, I wouldn't buy a metal bed
though, or any bed with posts for a headboard. A solid headboard is much more
comfortable and functional. Your bedroom can handle a more substantial bed
with more visual weight to it – not too bulky or it will take over the room
(depending on the size of the bed – full, queen, king), but definitely one with
more presence than these.
I like the looks of the beds you've chosen, I just don't think they'll be very
comfortable and you may be setting yourself up for the same disappointment you
had with the other bed.

I also like the bed with the solid headboard. Along with the reasons
mentioned –– all good ones –– I would really want a headboard I can
prop a pillow on and lean my head against when reading in bed. And,
especially with your bed being not against the wall, I think this
would work much better with a solid headboard.

Thanks to all for the great input. I'm leaning toward the leather
headboard but will do a round or two of in–store shopping before taking
the plunge. Oh course, if I get the leather headboard, a certain EMD we
all know and love will surely be knocking on my door with her pillow in
hand, no? Thanks again. I'll report back as soon as I make a purchase.
